Famitsu posted an interview with the producer and staff of Z.O.E.:

F: You mean to say the game's enjoyment doesn't come from piloting a robot, but that the robot animation story and style of this game is the main thing?

Kojima: Z.O.E. is a game. We believe action games are the best kind of titles for interactive gaming. Players can control these huge machines, something that they will never experience in real life; that's where the excitement comes from. Action games allow players to really have this kind of experience. As they are experiencing this, many players will feel very at home and comfortable with it, like some kind of "Animation deja vu." Becoming a central character in an animated story, and even recall scenes of movies from the good old days...
