NBA Live 2002 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:10 AM, EST
We added a review of EA’s latest basketball game:

The graphical improvements are very noticeable when compared to last year's game. Players have been brought to life by increasing the number of polygons to give a very natural life-like appearance. Life-like bodies and heads virtually make every NBA player a spitting image of their real-life counterpart. This includes fine details such as: tattoos, accessories, afros and shoes. The animation is incredibly fluid thanks to the developers ability to implement hundreds of new motion capture animations and a more steady framerate.

Casper: Spirit Dimensions review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 9:09 AM, EST
We added a review of TDK Mediactive’s ghost game, Casper: Spirit Dimensions:

The tasks tend to be like one big scavenger hunt. This is fun at the outset but becomes tiresome somewhere in the middle of the sixteen huge levels. As with platform games of the past, you must solve puzzles and seek a variety of powerups which aid in defeating the varied enemies. It would appear the difficulty of the later stages was increased to give the game some more play time but instead ends up causing frustration for those who have even made that far.

Smuggler's Run 2 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:13 AM, EST
We added a review of Rockstar’s Smuggler’s Run 2:

New this year is the addition of countermeasure weapons which are awarded as the game progresses. At the outset, these countermeasures sounded like a great idea, but in reality they do little to actually hinder your enemies. This is painfully evident with the bombs which end up exploding under your vehicle which sends you flying and landing flipped over. This usually ends in an arrest or wastes precious seconds in timed missions.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:10 AM, EST
We added a review of Namco’s latest Ace Combat game:

The addition of detailed cockpit voices adds to the tension and intensity of each mission. Wingmen give constant updates and outline objectives and advise of immediate areas that need attention. In addition, cut scenes tell a story of a young man who lost his father to a mysterious fighter pilot. The story is compelling and adds some drama to compliment the actual missions. As the story progresses, your character, known as Mobius One, starts to gain legendary status. The story is so well told that you actually start to feel proud of the praise and attention your character garners throughout the game. As a result, the voice acting is top notch.

F1 2001 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:10 AM, EST
We also added a review of EA’s racer, F1 2001:

As mentioned already, gameplay was not really a problem last year. Nevertheless, EA Sports has gone back and revamped the A.I. in the game. The A.I. is good and reacts appropriately depending upon the status of the race. It is not like the cheating A.I. found in GT3. Every driver on the track will battle and react to maintain position, while constantly looking for the next opportunity to overtake. This results in creating a very viable and intense racing experience. Control of the cars has also been tweaked and players have an extensive range of options in setting up their car. Variables such as aerodynamics, suspension, brakes and gearbox can all be adjusted to suit your individual needs.

Arctic Thunder review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:50 AM, EST
We posted a review of Midway’s racer, Arctic Thunder:

The game offers a number of modes including: Race, Points, Training, Arcade and Battle. The Points mode kept us the most busy while enduring the awful visuals. In points you must earn your way by collecting power-ups, performing tricks, and taking out opponents. You can then use your earned points in the upgrade shop for additional attributes, snowmobiles, hidden tracks and riders. The Battle mode is basically the two-player mode where players must earn the most kills by taking out opponents.

Armored Core2: Another Age review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:50 AM, EST
We also added a review of From Software’s mech game, Armored Core2: Another Age:

This expansion takes place a few years after Leos Klain’s coup on Mars. As in Armored Core2 you are a Raven, a mercenary who gives their services to the highest bidder. This means that there’s not linear path through the game, you can make your own choices as to the jobs you take, and the story revolves around them. A variety of different mission objectives are included in the game, and since there are many different paths to take, you can accept them based on your own personal strengths and weakness’.

NHL 2002 reviews - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:46 AM, EST
We added two staff reviews of EA’s hockey game, NHL 2002.
Here’s a bit from the first review:

The development team has basically taken some of the old school techniques and mixed them with the best of the new in order to deliver a solid control and gameplay experience. Maneuvering the players along the ice is more smooth and fluid when compared to last year's iteration of the game. A number of new moves have been added. Two of the most useful is the ability to raise the puck off the ice when passing and the freedom to control your own stick during a break-away or deke move. The Big Hits have been toned down a bit in favor a more realistic game situation. Nevertheless, if you want to rock someone with their head down you are more than equipped to do so.

Spy Hunter review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 9:29 AM, EST
We added a review of Midway’s latest racer:

In terms of gameplay, much of the essence of the original has been retained. It remains fast and at times extremely challenging. Your super vehicle offers all of the original weapons from 1983 as well as a few new ones including the ability to morph into a speed boat and motorcycle. While the available weapons are satisfactory, it would have been more exciting to add a better variety of weapons to dispose your enemies.

Interview with Chris Deering - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 10:45 AM, EST
C&VG posted a huge interview with Chris Deering, one of three presidents of Sony's computing sector.
Here’s a bit:

Will we see the first online games through PS2 this year or next year? Can we expect to see this happening in Europe in the next 12 months?

I think you'll see more and more of it in the next 12 months. Every new game we start writing internally - whether in Soho, Liverpool or Cambridge - has online features built into the game design. The new Tony Hawk's game has an online feature. SCEA has games called Frequency and Navy Seals that are clearly online oriented.
*snip*
You probably read about the fact that we have a program analyser - it's a device that analyses the efficiency of programs. On PSone it took us about four years to get one of those things, and now we have a couple next door and people come and put their games through it. It's very revealing that even a game like GT3, which everybody said, "wow, that's what PS2's about" only uses about 25 percent of the capacity. What it says is that as people learn to get more out of the various elements, the chips and the BUS, etc, that you're going to see some really exciting stuff.

Silent Scope 2: Dark Silhouette review - Comments (0)

We added a review of Konami’s arcade shooter, Silent Scope 2:

In Silent Scope you were on your own. In Silent Scope 2 you are teamed up with another sniper who cannot be trusted. As the story unfolds, the tension between the two increases. Unfortunately the cheeseball acting and overall plot make this tension laughable. The gameplay mirrors the original and yet manages to make things a little more exciting. The action and intensity of combat is increased thanks to mobile levels and more varied bosses. As already mentioned, the inclusion of a number of sniper gadgets makes things more interesting.

Kinetica review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:51 AM, EST
We added a review ofSCEA’s futuristic racer, Kinetica:

The racing is fairly standard fare, you can get boost, powerslide, and unleash attacks on opponents via the numerous crystals that are scattered throughout the tracks. The controls are little loose, but they are plenty adequate. Where the game is unique, at least as far as futuristic racers are concerned, is its trick system. Very similar to SSX, Kinetica’s trick system rewards difficult stunts with boost, which is necessary to win the later races. Stunts can be performed on the ground as well as in the air by holding down the R1 button, and then moving the left analog stick in a predetermined pattern. There are a number of tricks that can be pulled off, but it’s just as effective to hold down the R1 button and wiggle the analog like a madman to do tricks.

Keeping with the theme of “just like any other RPG” is the combat system. Battles are turned based with a meter that charges and when it’s full your character can attack. Weapons, armor, and items are all equipped in a simple fashion dating back to the original Dragon Warrior. As usual various characters will join your party and assist you, and various others will leave. I’d go on more about how the game plays, but there’s no need, you’ve already played it before.

Silent Hill 2 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:05 AM, EST
We added a review of Konami’s survival horror game, Silent Hill 2:

Although a lot of the gameplay structure is similar to the majority of survival horror games, the puzzles present in Silent Hill 2 are strikingly different. Most games have you finding a set number of objects and placing them in the right place in order to open a new level. Much like the original, Silent Hill 2 uses a more cerebral approach. Thankfully, the difficulty of the puzzles can be adjusted at the beginning of the game. In easy mode, the enemies go down quickly and the puzzles are quite simplistic. At the opposite end of the difficulty rating, things become quite strategic and the puzzles are cryptic in nature. The ability to adjust the difficulty is a welcomed feature as it will give more access to the gaming public. Nevertheless, the formula of the game remains like the original in many ways, it is all about exploring, picking up clues and objects and following the trail through linear locations. Everything should be searched as even the most blank-looking billboard may have a code on it that unlocks a room later in the game. Therefore, most of your time is spent looking for stuff and then trying to figure out what to do with everything.

Acclaim also shipped its latest racing game, Burnout.
Here’s a bit of the press release:

The holiday season is off to a fast and furious start as Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. has shipped Burnout, one of the year’s most highly anticipated video games for the PlayStation2 computer entertainment system. Created by Criterion Games Limited, an award-winning developer of interactive entertainment, Burnout is an arcade-style driving game that has the gaming industry buzzing with its stunning next-generation graphics and white-knuckle, foot-to-the-floor game play.

Burnout was inspired by some of the most memorable car chase scenes from the greatest action films of all time. The game features an incredibly sophisticated and intelligent traffic system, which challenges players to race to the finish line at breakneck speeds through a myriad of trucks, cars and buses. With dramatic crashes possible with every turn of the wheel, competing drivers are rewarded for pushing the envelope and their skills to the extreme. Burnout also includes a simulated in-game heart monitor, which rewards the player with incredible bursts of speed as their pulse increases with every risk they take.
