Posted by @ 8:08 AM, EST
Electronic Arts officially announced today that they have signed an exclusive deal with New Line Cinema to create games based on the upcoming The Lord of the Rings movies.
A slice of the press release:

The license grants EA the exclusive rights to develop and publish products based on the movies for next generation video game consoles and handheld platforms

EA will launch the first of their games in Fall 2002, in conjunction with the second motion picture, The Two Towers. Information on the subsequent games will be announced at a later date

That's geat to see EA broadening thier horizons to include such a huge RPG conducive title. Anyway that's what I suspect the eventual game genre will be- RPG. Imagine that- expansive environments, wizards and elf/hobbits oh my.

The plot is there to create an ongoing series, even with the option to supercede or equal the Final Fantasy series.

This is a massive license for EA and furthers their future dominance of the RPG scene with the co-operation of Square. All power to them

Don't forget the promotion of 'Lord of the Rings' is solely due to Peter Jackson a true New Zealander and I'm hoping this will be described in the game. Whether it be in actual gameplay or in additional bonuses such as bonus footage, pics and other material associated with it New Zealand. Oh yeah I'm not a New Zealander I'm an Australian.
