Sega Sports Tennis review
Posted by @ 5:10 AM, EDT
We added a review of Segas latest tennis game:

Of course with any sports game control and gameplay are the most important elements. Gameplay for the most part is tight and easy to control. Shot strength is dependent upon how fast you can get your player to the ball and set up for a return. The only problem with control comes when trying to pull of successful drop shots. They are not as effective as they could be due to the fact that dropping one in against an opponent is virtually impossible. Sega Sports Tennis is a great multiplayer experience. However the one-player modes can get frustrating due to inconsistent CPU A.I.

Sega sports is a real fine game that fails just a few aspects short of a perfect tennis game. The log and the drop shot needs a lot of work, it needs to be a little more successful than it is. I agree that you spend way too much time doing drills. The only drill that is even fun is the pin crusher.

Sega really needs to look at adding more players. They doen't have to be real pros they can just be made up names. Then they should add an editing tool so you can edit their names, their look, and their skills. It would be nice to be able to add your own players. But to do this they need to add one more mode, career mode. It should be set up where you have a starting salary and you have to work your way up through challengers to the Grand Slam events ending with a season championship event. It would be nice to be able to play in a lot of tournaments 2 out of 3 sets or just 1 set if you don't want to play long matches.

One more thing that would be nice is you have 2 slice buttons for you serve. Why not make it one slice serve and one kick serve.

This game is problably the best tennis game i've played so if you haven't rented it yet, hurry up.

I think a better name for this game would be "Sega Sports Tennis Drills!" There is something wrong with a game that makes you spend ten times more hours in drills rather than playing actual games. It is really annoying that actually winning tournament games gives you no points to improve your character skills, and there is no way you'll win higher level tournaments without going through boooooring drills which are incredibly stingy on points if you don't 'clear' them. I got bored after drilling up to level 4 exercises... and still cannot win level 3 matches. I retired the game.

The custom character generator is O.K. at best. I think the custom character generator of "NBA Street" is the gold standard. Plus winning games in "NBA Street" actually counts for improving your character.

Game play is nice, and it seems to simulate most aspects of tennis pretty well... all except a drop shot. I have yet to successfully perform one even though the computer control opponents pull them out easily.

If they make a sequel, they'd better improve the drilling:playing ratio.
