MediaCreate Talks PS2
Posted by @ 1:27 PM, EST
Core posted a small interview with MediaCreate president Hosokawa-san.
Here’s a slice of it:

Question: There have been many gaming related developments this year. One of the biggest announcements was the PlayStation2, what kind of an impact do you think the PS2 has had so far?

Hosokawa-san: The impact has been very big. The original PlayStation has been a huge success which helped fuel interest in it's successor. Despite all the rumors before it's official unveiling, the PlayStation2 official specifications are impressive. I think the keys to it's success will be the number of units sold next year, hardware prices, and a diverse lineup of software appealing to people who typically don't purchase game consoles.

I think the PS2 does have some problems appealing to this older market though. One is the DVD movie lineup, and the other is the system's expandability. I don't think Sony has sufficiently explored the expandability of the PlayStation2 for future uses. Also, I think we may only regard the PS2 as a true 'game console' for the first few years.

In the domestic market, the Dreamcast has very little influence. Therefore, I think the PS2 and Dreamcast can coexist in Japan, but not in North America and Europe. I think the PS2 will greatly affect the Dreamcast in those markets. When the PS2 is released there next September it should be interesting to see the impact on the Dreamcast market.
