600 000 PS2 units for Japanese launch?
Posted by @ 2:46 PM, EST
National Console Support updated their page today with some info on the Japanese launch:

"Separate distributors have told NCS overnight that a range of 600,000 to 750,000 launch units is more likely than the anticipated 1 million being bandied about. Couple this with the fact that Sony wants to apportion roughly 250,000 units to their own on-line web shop and we have a potential shortage on our hands."

Comment: Trust whomever you want. All I know is that if you pay $800 for a PSX2 from N.C.S. I hope your loyalty is worth getting ripped. Let the buyer beware.

Comment: As a long time customer of NCS, I'll trust them before I trust your numerous "contacts" in these Asian locals. There are what, 1000 import shops across the US? So if NCS fudges the numbers to get $800 per console, wouldn't it look kinda odd when 99% of the other importers charge much less?

Comment: Bullshit! I have contacts in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. None of them has heard of this rumored shortage. N.C.S. is just making excuses so they can drive their price up and/or because they've taken too many pre-orders.

Comment: Where did you get the European launch price from Tom?

Comment: The PS2 will cost 220 in the UK. Imports consoles will be around the $800 mark which is about 500. Wait for the European launch I'd say.

Comment: Iron Curtain dude needs to remove that iron curtain and read the post again. Note the following portion: "allotted to Sony's online ordering system in Japan." How the heck you get this export stuff from that statement is beyond me. Now I realize English isn't the native language for a lot of people on the net, but dag nabbit, that news bit ain't that hard to follow. For an even clearer look, go to http://ps2.ign.com/news/15212.html. Now I've got friends in Germany that understand this stuff. Please read carefully.

Comment: Don't you guys think that Sony annouced that they are going to sell 2 millions
units of PS2 the first 2 days of launch is a little ridiculous?
I think Sony is just over joyed with its past success with PS and they think
people will just pay $400 for a jack-of-all-trade machine...

Comment: I'm a little confused, is the official launch on March 4th? Or is it this Thursday? A buddy of mine in Tokyo says they will have units for sale this Thursday (hopefully one for me :)) Perhaps the other 250,000 units are for pre-sales like this one.

Comment: Pfff! Yeah, right! As if Sony's gonna EXPORT 250,000 PS2s! Though it can translate to $$$, it just doesn't seem like Sony to export consoles...

Comment: Dude, read the article again. 250,000 units are being allotted to Sony's online ordering system in Japan, meaning we incredibly eager people here in the States are gonna have to vie for just 500,000 units along with the hungry Japanese consumers. A product with *this* much hype and anticipation just ain't gonna sell for $500 come launch day. It's just plain Economics 101 dag nabbit!! I don't remember the Dreamcast having anywhere near this level of demand (the Japanese didn't buy into it either), yet the Dreamcast sold for well above $500, some importers wanting a cool $1000 for it back in November 1998.

Comment: Now just how did "just 750,000 units at launch" immediately translate to "$800 at launch." Your logic seems just...illogical!
