Sony investigates claims Of PS2 glitches
Posted by @ 3:12 PM, EST
From the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Saturday morning edition:

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Friday that it is investigating technical glitches reported in some of the new PlayStation2 video game consoles released last week.

By Friday, the company had received complaints of nonfunctioning DVD players in 340 consoles, roughly 0.05% of all units shipped to date. Sony says it appears that when game data is recorded on the memory cards used by the console, the program for operating the DVD player is erased.

Sony is asking customers with defective units to ship back the game players and memory cards so the company can determine the cause of the problem. According to a Sony press release, however, the company is not planning to halt production or issue a recall.

Some reports suggest that Ridge Racer, from Namco Ltd. (9752), may be associated with the problem, but Namco says its software is not the cause.

And here a bit from an Reuters article:

"According to our investigation up to now, we assume the problem was caused by faults in some memory cards, not faults in any specific software for the PlayStation2," Sony said.

Comment: Hi all, well Bob I think that you are completely mad, asking why Sony put a DVD player in the machine. I guess that you don't know that Sony is still loosing money over PlayStation. They don't make money of the machine, the profit comes from the sale of software. Sony will be loosing money for the next 3 -4 years on the PS2. So don't think that Sony is making money just because they put DVD player in the machine.

All the problems that we have seen from the release of PS2 will on fixed before the release in the states or Europe. So I think that all you guys should stop complaining about PS2, because when it comes time for the release in your own country, you'll be eating your hat, and wishing that you had a PS2. You haven't seen anything yet!

First generation software is what you have seen, remember the first days of PlayStation, when you had Ridge racer, and through time the Ridge Racer series got better and better in terms of visuals. Well it's the same with PS2, just wait, until the programming teams have had time to get to terms with the technology within the machine. And by the time the machine is released in the states you'll be lining out side your local game store wanting to buy the best machine on the planet. Sony has the backing, of the best developers in the world, so don't fear SONY is here.

When Sony entered the games industry many people laughed thinking that they had no chance against Nintendo and Sega, but you guys all know what happened, they made the big boys look very stupid indeed. Sony has changed the games industry for good, at first when Nintendo and Sega where in control. The age limit of gamers was about for the ages of 6-16. Sony has changed that, now the age range is from 5-25, and now that they have added the delights of a DVD player, the age range is going to climb again.
So what you see is, Sony has the lead and everybody else is following them, just like sheep. It's going to be a long time before any other company can catch Sony. But catch is one thing, surpassing them is another!

Thank you for your time, Neo Out...

Comment: After reading all the comments and letters from people worried about how PS2 didn't live up to expectations, how the games were less than spectacular, hardware glitches, and game delays, I was left chuckling. People, please remember that this a JAPANESE system launch. Take a look at the Japanese launch of Dreamcast, N64, and the old Playstation and you will see the same problems. Delve into the archives of your favorite console site, and you'll see what I am talking about. Remember the constant delays for Dreamcast games(Sonic, scheduled for release with the system, was delayed a full month after the DC's release, Sega Rally 2 was delayed even longer), overheating Playstations, shortages on N64..etc..etc. In the case of hardware glitches and shortages, these problems will be rectified when the PS2 releases in th US. As for the games, people are comparing the Dreamcast US launch to the PS2 Japanese launch, which is unfair. Of course Dreamcast games look better or equal to what's on PS2, they've had the system and specs for nearly 2 years! I can't comment on how good the PS2 games are cuz I haven't seen them, and neither have 99% of readers out there. Screenshots and Quicktime movies are alot less accurate than the real thing. So everyone just hang tight for the US launch, and than we can judge for ourselves. In the meantime, lets enjoy the systems we have now. Anyone for a round of Soul Calibur?

Comment: I really hate when a good disscussion about relevant topics gets muddle by the preseptions and thoughts of people. If all of you who continue to badger and argue would just stop and look at what you are fighting over, you'd see it was pointless. Whether one of you is right or wrong makes no difference, the machine is still going to come to the US and is still going to be able to compete with the Dreamcast. Now, the reason why I didn't mention Nintendo is the backing for the is small, I mean this is the same company that told us they would make a CD system WAY back when, and then scraped it leaving Sony with the pieces, hence the Playstation. In any case, with every new system, there are shortages of games and as this subject had started on, glitches. So while Playstation, and the N64 have a long line of games the Dreamcast has few and the PS2 has even fewer, as for the 64DD I'm not sure. But from what I see, hands down the PS2 is the system of choice... until the Dolphin comes out... or should I say... IF the Dolphin comes out... <laughs>

Comment: First off DVD players in Japan start at about $250 dollars U.S. so all these reports of players costing $600 plus are B.S. These reporters probably never did leave their desk to find out. The cost of the MOVIES not the player is what is keeping DVD down in Japan with prices from 40-80 on the average (anime is always on the high end)I don't even buy movies here. I just buy off the net and have them sent here. Somone said that Sony just put DVD into to the machine to jack up the price. Well since Sony is losing like $200 per machine I don't think they did that to make money. Remember when everyone bashed Sega for not putting a DVD in Dreamcast? Now people are bashing Sony for putting it in? Why? The DVD is in there to take advantage of games that will be coming out too.

Comment: Also about the DVD player being built in. it's like this, the DVD player only happens to be there because the PS2 can play games off of DVDs. Sort of like how the CD play is in the PSX because it plays games off of CDs.

Comment: Just a couple of extras try 2x the image quality of vhs and theater sound. It's not a big deal in the US because a lot of people are getting dvd players but in japan it's another story the players are about $1,000 and the movies are like $40-75. In the first weekend when the PS2 was realsed there was a rise in the sales of dvd's. DvD kick a$$ and so dose PS2

Comment: Why did the playstation 2 have the dvd player in it anyway. this just raide the price about a $75-$100 up. Sony is smart to do this but they should have never put it in in the first place. DVD's are stupid all they really do is give you a few more extra sceens from the movie but the machine costs $350. It is a rip off. so is PSX2 did you hear me sony. your machine's stink

Comment: Chaborf: You have to remember that yours was a glitchy pack-in goodie and GT2 was a glitchy game CD. There's a difference. You get a browser for free as opposed to a $39.99 game CD. Sony made it difficult because they probably didn't want to give a $39.99 CD for free to a person who didn't have a GT2 CD in the first place. The Browser CD for the DC, however, is not something that you can buy alone. You HAVE to get it packaged with the DC. If Sega accidentally gives a DC Browser CD to a person who doesn't have one, it's no biggie, which is unlike a $39.99 GT2 package.

Sony wants to make sure that a $39.99 package isn't given out for free, whereas Sega's "No Questions Asked" policy seems to apply to something that was free in the first place.

Comment: I was just wondering if anyone caught the news the other day... I thought it was rather convenient for Microsoft to advertise their new system on national television directly following the news story that there may be glitches with the Playstation2. How much do you think Microsoft paid for that one?

Comment: as with all new machines there are a few "glitches", as said b4 all
these probs will be sorted for US/Europe launch, hopefully...

remember all those dreamcasts that had probs, i know of one UK
importer who abandoned importing machines cos of the cost of returning
machines.

i never rush into buying new consoles, because of these "glitches".
despite jap machine been sold at silly prices. i have contacted
several HK exporters, they wanting $1000-$1100 per machine, what
planet are they on!!!

Comment: Excuse me, mr metal death.....Sega DID admit all the glitches with the DC after its launch. As one DC buyer whose system came without a browser, I called up Sega to complain. They sent out one to me no questions asked, unlike Sony- denying the memory card recalls(when there obviously was a problem), also giving lots of hell to people who tried to get the "fixed" GT2 copy. Sony isn't all glitter and gold in the CS department.

Comment: Those of you who eagerly await the american release of the PS2 may be disapointed because a glitch like this could drasticly change its release date. Hopefully, It won't. However if it does, It may let Sega (and possibly Nintendo)
,over shadow Sony come september. (Especialy since Shenmue is comeing out that month) So to all Sony fans: Hang in there. Playstation2 will prevail (Hopefully)

Comment: One thing you guys have to realize is the with the PS2. Options are upgradeable via software patches. The DVD problem only takes a driver revision to be fixed. Think of all the PC games that you download patches and updates too. Same boat except they have to send out a new CD-Rom for the time being. It's a 4xDVD which is plenty fast and as for the 36,40X+++ remember that that is a MAX speed the average 40x drive only reads at 8x most of the time and hits top speed when loading large programs. Movies play at 1x DVD, Cd's Play at 1x, the speed on DVD/CD drive on the PS2 is plenty fast and last thing I want with my game system is for it to sound like a jet taking off like my 40x Cd rom does!

Take Care,
Chris

Comment: Here's the thing.. at least the PS2 wasn't delayed like the 64dd and I sure as hell doubt it will be scraped either. so what if there's a glitch- were only human. all it needs is tweaking.. the only thing I don't ghet is why so slow of a CDROM.. I got a F*cking 48x in my PC.. I think sony COULD do better..
