PS2 Vs PC
Posted by @ 12:57 PM, EDT
Arstechnica slapped up a fat article comparing the PS2 with the PC.
Some of it:
So which machine is more powerful? Well, if you're talking 3D gaming and you mean right now, I wouldn't hesitate to give the crown to the PS2. Looking ahead to the next two or three years, the future looks much less certain. It'll be quite a while before developers are able to figure out how to harness the full capabilities of the PS2, and while they're scratching their heads the PC will be getting more and more powerful. As we'll soon see with the NV15, the PC is still advancing quickly under the old "large buckets and slightly bigger pipes" paradigm. However, the PS2 represents the true next generation of media processing, and until the PC catches up with it in terms of bandwidth and overall data throughput (read "SIMD") it can't be worthily called a true dynamic media machine.

Iïŋ―m eagerly awaiting the PS2 and youïŋ―re hungry on the PS3. I think SONY would love us! Even if SONY has got some knowledge about games (Polyphony Digital is a Developer founded by SONY, right?) I donïŋ―t think that they do the PS2 just for fun. I think that they too want the money they get for it. And Nintendo does. And Sega does. The market works only that way, right? But I think they are able to do superb games. And thatïŋ―s the difference to Microsoft... And guys: Who really would put away his PC?! Even if it is not the ultimate gameplattform from MicroSoft, it still has some nice games like Quake (even if theyïŋ―re converted to whatsoever, itïŋ―s more fun with a mouse and a keyboard...) And itïŋ―s strength is that it is able to do other things as well. That means: PC=work, PS2=awesome games Why Tekken4? Why not SoulCalibur? |

Check out what Nintendo prez Hiroshi Yamauchi had to say about the X-Box: 'Microsoft is an incredible company, but it doesn't know anything about games. Microsoft promised to turn the PC into the ultimate game platform, something that never even came close to happening.' I couldn't agree more. |

It is very exciting to think of what Sony (THE formost consumer electronics company in the world) will be bringing us in the future. PS2 is really just the beginning. I think developers will be excited and worried at the same time, because as we've seen with PS2, the more powerful technology gets the more diffacult it will be to program, and PS2s one tough customer. So if PS2 is going to be tough, what about the X-Box Probably 10 times harder than PS2... |

While the PS2 is more powerful now, no question, PCs will always pass it at some point. Remember that game consoles are made for just that ....games. Their whole purpose is to create amazing graphics/sound output, while the PC does millions of things. Granted the PS2 will have internet capabilities soon to come, I believe that the PC is a lot more versatile. Not to say that the PS2 is bad, but I will always use my PC for the internet, downloading, spreadsheets, Photoshop etc. PS2=Great GAMES! |

Guys, guys, guys, . . . I'm not looking forward to the PS3 now . . . I'm just saying, the future of PCs looks to be similar to the arcitecture of the PS2 . . . and the fact that Sony is pioneering it means they have a good chance of staying ahead of the game in their future pursuits. Don't worry, all my attention is on the PS2 (and PSX) |

Iïŋ―m loving it. I like the thought of laughing at my friends with their new graphic chip as expensive as my whole PS2 and telling me, that the PS2 is shit because it has no keyboard. I think: PS2 is for gaming, my PC is used to work. Nothing is better than the perfect SONY-gamepad when it comes on gaming (what the PS2 is built for..) If we talk about the PS3: What will FFXV be?! And there sure will be a RRX, right? But there should be also some nice games like The Bouncer is for the PS2: something new! |

Wow . . . I certainly have new respect for Kuteragi (spelling) I now see why the PS2 has won so many awards for its engineering and design. Since Sony is helping pioneer this movement, I'm scared to think how the PS3 will be :) |
