I also figured that out the hard way and can confirm that there is NO need to remove the DVD rom drive, just remove the 4 small screws and take off the cover (And yes getting the ribbon cable back on is a pain the arse, I had to take off the bottom portion of the unit to do it properly (i have never seen ribbon connectors like that before with collapsing tops). Anyway, I do still have trouble getting it to boot ps1 games. When in the first swap step do you remove the ps2 game and put in the ps1 game? (I am refering to the first swap step, the rest seem clear enough)

I can confirm that this does, indeed, work. The info at Magic Box is a little off, though.

First, I don't believe it is necessary to completely remove the DVD-ROM drive. You should be able to simply remove the lid that covers the drive to extract the spindle. I took the entire drive out and had a hell of a time getting the ribbon cable re-connected. Don't try taking out the whole drive unless you know what you're doing!

Second, swapping discs while they are spinning will undoubtedly tear the ass out of your PS2 laser. I would suggest using this method sparingly.

I have also heard that it is possible to boot backup PS2 games using a similar method. Only time will tell. ;o)
