Online PS2 sales on hold
Posted by @ 5:18 PM, EDT
Sony has postponed the online sales of PS2 on playstation.com in order to ensure that retail stores receive sufficient units.

SCEA's Senior Vice President Jack Tretton said, "By choosing to postpone the PlayStation.com e-commerce launch, we are demonstrating that our priority is to support our retail partners and, ultimately, consumers who rely upon their local storefronts to purchase PlayStation products. With the upcoming launch of the revolutionary PlayStation 2, we look forward to continuing the momentum for the category at retail by being able to offer a complete end-to-end solution to the consumer with PS one and PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system."
Thanks to DailyRadar for the info.

I went to the store when they said to be there, they changed the rules, but told me if someone didnot come and get one that I could buy it because they will not hold them for anyone, but one guy went to buy it and his check would not go through so, as I am standing there, they told him that he could go to the ATM and they would hold it for him, he came back w/o money, and they asked him if he wanted to apply for a Target card, he did and was declined, so they let him call someone to come down and buy it for him...I was PO. If the idiot came to the store with no method of real payment why would they let him have every option and turn away me...who came there with money to purchase it... I will never shop at another Target again...and discourage anyone out there who has ever been treated unjust not to shop there either.....Try going home to a child who only asked for the PS2 for christmas when some 18 year old guy who cannot afford one gets it when what he really needs is a JOB!!!!

I'm sorry for all you that were unable to get your PS2.

It seems like people think this page is owned by Sony, it is not, it is an independent fan site. But maybe some people from Sony read it.....

Also, the reason the PS2 is so hard to get is becasue Sony only had 500 000 units ready for launch because of parts missing for production. And the demand is way higher.

As far as I know they will be shipping out 100 000 units every week from now on.

I previously commented on what I thought of Sony's distribution of Playstation. But I had to write to add this. Sony is claiming that they are holding off electronic sales so that consumers can go to their storefronts. What Sony is doing is aiding the scalpers who are making vast profits from Sony's labor. I don't even understand as an attorney how this is legal. How can it be illegal to scalp theater tickets but be legal to sell something for four times what it is worth when it is still currently being sold by the manufacturer? The failure to electronically sell is aiding the scaler and that's it. The stores had so few to sell it was a farce and only the people who make a habit out of buying these things knew what to do. The stores gave me bad information on Wednesday when I called over and over and over and over. This led me to just missing out on getting the playstation I wanted for my son who was going to PLAY it and not going to resell it for enormous profit. You are hurting the consumers and the stores because consumers such as myself have nothing but contempt for the stores who handled this matter in such a poor manner. Please start selling this product electronically so Sony can control the sales and not leave it in the hands of the stores who cannot monitor who is receiving the system. Electronic sales can ensure that each household only receives one system which would eliminate the resale problem.

What Sony has succeeded in doing is supplying the vultures that are now selling the systems for over $1,000. THAT is who received the scant meager shipment sent by SONY, not the children who have been salivating for it since reading the neverending ads. Not the people who actually play it. This was so poorly done I am amazed. How can the stores even have participated in this? With each system able to be sold for four times what it cost no wonder the ultimate consumer was unable to get any systems. My son is heartbroken and I am utterly disgusted with SONY and the stores that participated in this debacle.

I am disappointed with the company as much as everyone else is..., and I really am very excited about getting the system as well, but I also don't want Sony to overly speed up their production process, because I want a quality machine. Sony has been known for their quality, and reliable products, and I don't want them to rush a product on the production line, because that could mean a decrease in quality and reliability! So with that all in mind, I respect Sony for that, I just hope they keep up with their tradition of the Sony name of quality, and good workmanship. So keep up the good work Sony, at least I know, when I do receive my product, it won't be reduced in quality, due to overly speeding production.

I think this is ridiculous. Walmart only had 24, Kmart had 6, and Shopko had 5. Does Sony think this is sufficient for those that depend on upfront store purchases. Should of planned better, or maybe this is all just a scheme. Hype up the product and then screw the customers. There better be another shipment soon because i dont consider this first shipment and actual one. Atleast send more than 6 to a store.

That is bull. I can't believe this. It is ludicrous. My wal-mart only got 25 and had 200 angry people waiting in line. Every store I have called said they were only getting like 10 stations. This is madness. It is crazy what they will do to produce that whole supply & demand issue. Why would they even bring them out if they didn't have enough to sell. And the cost is $299.99 (supposedly)...

I went to Wal-mart tonight and they only had 33 units. Do you call this sufficient? A multi-million dollar company and United States largest
retailer can't get more units than that from a multi-million dollar company like Sony. There sure is going to be a lot of dissapointed people for Christmas. You should have planned ahead Sony. Need to start terminating some of them so-called upper management personnel and replace them with someone that knows what they are doing!

I think this is very unfair because I have a handicap son who wants this system very badly and I am not able to leave my home and camp out all night as these retail stores. I am very disapointed in your company and I think the fair thing to do would do is only put so many online to sell to give us who can't be out all night waiting in line.

Considering that I do most of my shopping online and my money is green and spends just as good as everyone elses, I think this isn't fair to the consumer who supports these companies on the web.
Very disappointed in SONY.
If I didn't have a 12 year old that had his heart set on the product I'd change my mind about buying one!!!
Sincerely,
Andrea L. Walton
