SCEA named GT2000 as Gran Turismo 3 in its launch announcement last night. Head in for the low-down on what the b'jaysus is going on

Let's set you straight from the outset: Gran Turismo 3 is merely the new name for GT2000, not the true Gran Turismo sequel series creator Kazanori Yamauchi has talked about for the past six months.
According to European sources, the American arm of Sony's PlayStation division has deemed that the original name for the stupidly impressive driving title will put people off actually buying it as they will see it as old and out of date.

There's still no confirmation if the game will ship with the new name in Europe, but you can bet everything you own that Yamauchi-san is going to be less than pleased that the future project he's been talking to the press about since PlayStation Festival 2000 in February will ostensibly appear on store shelves early next year.

Yamauchi-san had always claimed GT2000 was only a cosmetic extension of his work on the current generation PlayStation, and that the next true game would be called Gran Turismo 3. However at ECTS he balked when asked questions about the next in the series and hinted that a name-change may be in order for the first title on PlayStation 2.

You'll know later today if Europe will follow America's lead in the matter. Bet you all wish you had those lovely, super-rare GT2000 demo discs now, don't you?

I like Gran Tourismo 3 better, since its comming out in 2001. If it came this year then by all means call it Gran Tourismo 2000.

I can only dream about playing Gran Tourismo at 60hz in pal format !!

hahaha, don't respond to this if you don't know what I am talking about, but isn't this name change to attract the casuals? Sony can never be hardcore. Look at SNK, KOF'99 Evolution just came out in 2000, they don't care. They use actual years when talking about their games. This is not meant to be flame bait, if I don't see any responses, than good

Wait.. I thought GT2000 was merely a major upgrade from GT2 and that GT3 would be an entirely new build? Was there a change of plans or did they decide to scrap that idea because after all of the improvements it turned into something much more than an upgrade?

Actually the Beast makes a very good point. The reasoning is flawed but he's absolutely right, this is a decision designed to attract the casual gamers. Think about it, the truly dedicated, hardcore race-game fan already knows about this game and wouldn't give a damn if it said "Festering Piece Of Shit" on the box, they'd be buyin' it anyway.

It's a sound economic move, I think, because they're right, the casual gamer who isn't informed about these matters will see the number 2000 on a game in 2001 and think it's been outdated already. I sure don't see how this is wrong, the more sales, the more profit. Capitalism works, folks! :{>

actually i don't know why it was called GT 2000 in the first place,i think they were caught up in all the y2k frenzy like everyone else and probably thought hey lets attach the number 2000 to our game because it's the thing to do or whatever,it is more fitting to call it GT3 anyways,it is a new game on a new console.

It was, but Marketing took over and Sony knows that GT3 by name alone will sell more then GT20000. It's a pity, because as Polyphony themselves stated "GT2000 is not a true sequal in the series as GT2 was to GT" yet, they go against their word and call it GT3 to attract more customers. I can't argue against them from a business standpoint, but now the next game will ge called GT4, and will thus be unjustly assciated with all the other countless sequals, even though it may be a quality game.
