why and how does a thread become locked

Ok, all your non stop post on why this and why this are really starting to piss me off. Anyway, if a mod sees something in a thread he doesn't appreciate than he'll lock it up. If he realizes that it is just subject for a flame war he'll lock it up. If there have been two or three threads already like it he'll close it up. Are if it's a thread just to insult someone on the board he'll close it up. (Hint: Your shot at Rev. Xbox)
