Is That a PS2 PocketStation, or You Just Happy to See Me?
Sony's relationship with 3Com may yield more than just new Memory Stick technology.
June 5, 2000
In an article written by Motley Fools today, a new piece of information floated to the surface of the rumor bog concerning a PDA for PlayStation 2.
While it is already public that Sony and 3Com share technology to expand the capabilities of the Palm Pilot to include audio-visual functionality (announced last November), today's news story surfaced with a new wrinkle. "Sony...is apparently working with Palm Inc. parent 3Com to develop a PDA that will work, in various ways, in tandem with Sony's next-generation PlayStation 2 console system," it reads.
Sony Computer Entertainment America back-peddled on it initial promises in delivering the PocketStation (or PDA) to the North America market last May at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition, claiming that the slow rate of manufacturing and "high demand" of the little memory card sized PocketStation could not be replicated in the West. Industry insiders added other reasons, such as difficulty in consistently manufacturing 100% reliable PDAs, and Sony's concern that it may be entering a market that competed with the Nintendo's Game Boy.
Already on its way in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment started making online phone games, which could potentially tie into the PS2 PDA. Sony Japan has aligned with NTT DoCoMo wireless phone service to provide games on phone handsets, although they they're not related to PlayStation or PlayStation2 games.
In the past Sony has talked about possibly expanding this blooming side of the business to Europe, with North America being a long-term possibility. However, Sony executives have pointed to an inordinant amount of wireless standards in the US as a substantial obstacle for truly cracking this emerging market. But if the PS2 PDA veers away from phone style games and sticks with complementing the PS2's strengths -- powerful audio-visuals -- then it could have something very interesting indeed.
Sony hasn't ventured into the PDA market yet for its PlayStation, but has implied that it had lofty plans for its PlayStation 2, especially in regard to Internet usage and audio-visual connectivity. While SCEA hasn't announced any official news on such a device, it's certainly not past the electronics giant to create a portable PlayStation 2 device that enables you to play hand-held games, but that also hooks up to several Sony devices as well, such as cameras, phones, and the similar technology.
Anyone for a mini-match of GT 2000 or Unreal Tournament?

Are we talking about a protable game systemd like the gameboy or more of an interactive memory card like the VMU. I am more of the opinion that the VMU was more of an innovation than simply a mini gameboy. (or pocketstation for that matter) And i dont think i would call it a PDA, no....definitely not.
By the way, what the hell is a pocketstation. I've never seen one before and actually have only breifly heard about them.

I have a pocketstation. It's basically just a standard ps memory card, with a very small built in display and 5 buttons. You can play mini-games that you download from other games, like Chocobo World from FF8 for example. You can also save regular games on it. So, it's almost exactly like Sega's VMU.

I could of sworn that the PDA came before the VMU.
Not that it matters anyway! Sega has there VMU and Sony has there PDA. Now everyone is happy. Or almost everyone is. I forgot about Microsoft and Nintendo. What kind of cool saving devices do they have with a screen on them?

The VMU is a PDA. That is like saying, I could have sworn "Eating Utensils" came before forks.
PS-Does this post make sense to everybody? It barely makes sense to me.
