Reader Editorial
Posted by @ 1:06 PM, EST
I received an editorial from a reader yesterday, and decided to post it.
So from now we’ll post reader editorials here, they must be well written though….
Here’s a bit from it:

"The Dreamcast can render 3.5 to 4 million polygons per second and it has a 56 k. modem in it. However this is not the advantages that it has that matters most. It runs off of a modified version of Windows CE. This means that it will be easy to port games from the computer to the Dreamcast. The hardware is almost the same as their Naomi arcade systems, so it will be easy to port arcade games to the Dreamcast. Further more development is quick compared to the PS2."

Comment: I think that the Sony Playstation is a far more superior machine then the Dreamcast or any system that is out on the market so far.Let's face it just on paper alone the PS2 has made the Dreamcast obsolete.I mean it can push more polygons it has more RAM.It supports a far superior controller, I mean what was Sega thinking when they designed that controller.I went as far as to rent the Dreamcast sytem and to be totaly honest with u I wasn't impressed with any of the games other then Soul Caliber from Namco, and judging by the screenshots of TTT (Tekken Tag Tournament)all over the web I think it's safe to say which machine is the most powerful. That said I think I have made my point it looks like Sega has another Saturn on their hands..

Comment: Look, just because the DreamCast can use Windows CE, does NOT make it easier to port games from the PC over to the DreamCast. Windows CE is NOT windows when you get down to real programming. And besides, I don't seem to recall any games written specifically for CE, on the PC or any other device. Are there any games that are actually written in CE for the Dreamcast?

Comment: i agree with most of what was said, but i don't think the DC will decline in a year, more like 2 year's time and even though Devin lashed out some of you wrongfully, his point about the development of PS2 isn't as hard as every person makes it out to be,read some of the developer's interviews and see for yourself, not assume it is from a criticizing Sega fan's viewpoint.

Comment: No doubt the PS2 is looking to be a great machine. But cut Sega some slack, they made a business mistake with the Saturn and they are trying to make a comeback. Remember after Sega left the market with the Saturn who did Sony have to compete against? N64 which had expensive games as well as no games for the system at launch and then after. Sony has been alone for a good 3 to 4 years. Now there is competition with Sega and the mysterious "Dolphin". There is an even playing field now. Look at the games that Sega is putting out in 2000 plus the price of the system and your getting a lot of machine for buck. Competition is healthy why would you want one guy dominating the market? Without competition then what would be the reason to make better consoles and better games?

Comment: Reffering to what Sean said about Dolphin possibly being 256-bit, I think this is highly unlikely. All along Nintendo has been saying the system will be released in Fall 2000. If they're going to bump it up to 256-bits then that's gonna cause a delay which is VERY bad for them. Besides it's the developers that ultimately determine how successful as system is and right now PS2 has MAJOR support so who even cares if Dolpin is 256 bit and PS2 is 128 bit. Remember, the PSX kicked N64's but and it wasn't nearly as powerful.

Comment: But yeh I do agree. PS2 arcade boards will become available just like Naiomi so ports will be just as easy from those. Once an engine is written game code is not that difficult to port so most games will be portable, of which many I'm sure are written to be exactly that, portable.
The difficulty with the PS2 will be the engine. Nobody is going to write a port for PS2 in week without already having a near finished engine.

(I saw Sean said: "I agree with you...")

Anyone is welcom to submit editorials to me, but they need to be well written to be posted...

Comment: You retards! I heard the developer ported Trickstyle over onto PS2 using 1 developer, in ONE WEEK. And you're saying it's hard to port?

Comment: Yes and no... It's true that game conversions will be easy... but development speed depends on the dev kit... the PS had a very nice dev kit and the SS had a worse one... so a lot of game developpers choose the PS, and that why the PS is still alive... We need new games, not conversion(just a bit:))

Comment: I agree with you I cant wait for the PS2 I bought a dreamcast just to hold me over when the PS2 comes out,What really makes me mad is sony has to hold it from being realeased in the us for more than a half a year that really sux,but I did hear about a possible summer launch that would be really smart, and I dont know if anyone else heard about an interview with nintendo and someone asked when your 128-bit system will come out and nintendo said they dont know when there 128-bit system is comming out but the dolphin will come out in the fall.So that means the dolphin MIGHT be 256-bits so I hope the PS2 is 256-bits. Oh and your site ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
