Sony warns caution on US price
Posted by @ 1:18 PM, EST
got some comments from Sony about Gamestop’s PS2 price ($399).
Here’s a bit of their article:

"“It’s normal in these situations for retailers to set the price high at first,” said one Sony source. “The $399 figure is certainly no indication on the European price – nothing has been confirmed for any territory as yet.”

Insiders are now pointing to a European price-point of between 250 and 299 for PlayStation2. As for the release date, Sony has vehemently smacked down intense speculation of a European slip into 2001.

“Those rumours are lies and are not to be believed,” the source continued. “From what we’re hearing, chip and unit production is well ahead of schedule. That doesn’t mean the machine will come out any earlier, but there are certainly no indications of any sort of slip in any way.”"

Comment: It would be a big mistake for Sony to release the PS2 for anything more than $300. A price tag higher than this will lead people towards the Dreamcast. Yeah, the specs are great, however how did DVD players do with their CD quality sound and crystal clear clarity when you could only buy them for $800. The mass market didn't pay any attention to them until they came down to the $300-400 range. At >$300 the hard core gamers will buy but the mass market will not.
