PlayStation2 Predicted to Become Hit Product of 2000

The verdict comes from a "Nikkei Electronics" annual poll of readers' hit product picks.

"March 6, 2000 (TOKYO) -- An overwhelming number of voters chose the PlayStation2 as the product most likely to be a bestseller in Japan in 2000.

Of the products voted most likely to succeed in 2000, the PlayStation2 from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) took first place, a hands-down victory with nearly 80 percent of voter support. Competing products trailed far behind in the ratings, with the Dolphin from Nintendo Co., Ltd. at 62nd place and the Dreamcast from Sega Enterprises Ltd. at 86th place. If the high hopes for PlayStation2 become a reality, SCE in 2000 will probably increase its present share of more than 60 percent of the home video game machine market in Japan.

Other hit product choices for the year 2000 reflected consumers' keen interest in online music distribution. Portable music players with semiconductor memory came in at second place, and services for delivering music over the Internet came fourth."
