Ridge Racer Evolution

IGN posted an interesting article where they compare RRV with RR4 and N64 version RR64.
Here’s a bit:

Obviously, Ridge Racer V is the best looking of them all, but it's surprising to see just how close the graphics are in past Ridge Racers compared to the cutting-edge Ridge Racer V. Each game has night and dusk courses, tunnels with lighting effects, complex architecture for even roadside detail (even far off the track, buildings and bridges can be seen in each game.) Even the trees in Ridge Racer V aren't too far removed from its PlayStation and N64 cousins -- it seems that branches are still rendered in 3D by crossing multiple sprites on the PS2. Granted, we had to look really closely to decide this, as the new routine used to render the trees and the multiple axis used makes the leaves look very real. However, only the palm trees are rendered in full 3D (which was the case, strangely, in the original Ridge Racer).
