Sony unit to recall PS2 DVD Player software

Straight from the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Thursday morning edition:
TOKYO --Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Wednesday it will begin recalling the startup software of the 1.25 million PlayStation2 video-game consoles shipped to date in order to fix the bug that unexpectedly allows the machines to play DVDs sold abroad.
Using machines marketed in Japan to play back the content of DVDs sold overseas is forbidden under an international agreement signed by DVD-player manufacturers and film companies.
The software can be returned to the company by mail from April 1 and through some 8,000 Seven-Eleven convenience stores nationwide soon.
Though the maker of the popular home video-game machine has not revealed the cost of the recall, an official said, "Production of replacement software and its mailing will cost us substantially."
From now on, the subsidiary of Sony Corp. (6758) will ship PlayStation2 consoles together with software that does not support the playing of foreign DVDs.

| I have tried the button pressing on the 'revised' software 1.01 on a 15000 PS2 with no sucess ! I hear that it only works with the early software 1.00. If anyone knows different let me know. no modchip fitted yet ! ( does that matter ?) |

| what will happen one who dicide not to turn their playstation 2 in, whitch I assume most pepole who own playstation 2 will. But is it possible SONY put some protection program on future playstation 2 game (just like they did on import playstation game) so that those unrecalled playstation 2 can't play future playstation 2 game? | |
