Interesting article from Reuters:

TOKYO, March 30 - Sony Corp said on Thursday it aims to ship 10 million of its blockbuster PlayStation2 game consoles worldwide in the business year starting on April 1.
Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony's game subsidiary Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, told a news conference the company was also sticking to its shipments forecast of 1.4 million units in the business year ending on Friday, less than a month after the console was launched in Japan on March 4.

The heavily hyped home game machine, which includes a digital video disc (DVD) player and will eventually offer access to the Internet, is key to Sony's profit outlook.
The first version of the Playstation generated approximately 40 percent of Sony's group-based operating profits.

Kutaragi said the company aimed to ship four million PlayStation2 consoles in Japan and three million each in Europe and the United States in 2000/01. European and U.S. shipments are due to start this autumn, he said.

Yup, it is Digital Versatile Disc... What's up with people calling them Digital Video Discs? I guess it's just easier to say. :P

Nipper: I was thinking the same thing, and my conclusion is that it could be both.

The great thing about DVDs is that in spanish, the acronym is stil "DVD", but it stands for "Disco Verstil Digital."

Anyway. DVD could mean two things, though Digital Versatile Disc seems to imply flexibility to the DVD format, and would therefore be the more acceptable term to use.

I thought DVD was an acronym for "Digital Versatile Disc".
