PS2 helps expand DVD market: Survey
Posted by @ 3:43 PM, EDT
From the Nikkei Industrial Daily Wednesday edition:

TOKYO -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2 DVD/game console is helping to expand the DVD market, according to a survey conducted by The Nihon Keizai Shimbun one month after the unit's March 4 release.

Some 53% of respondents who own the console have bought up to five DVDs since purchasing a PlayStation2, and 4% have purchased more than six. Another 30% have rented between one and five DVDs. Only 23% of respondents have not purchased or rented DVDs.
Asked about their objective in buying the console, 74% of respondents chose "playing video games and watching DVDs," 20% chose "mainly playing games," and 6% selected "mainly watching DVDs."

Those answers were different when customers were asked about their actual use of the console, with 52% saying they use the console primarily for games, 33% choosing a combination of games and DVDs, and 15% saying they use PlayStation2 mainly to watch DVDs.

More than 90% of respondents said they were satisfied with the unit. Some 15% said the unit is "much better than expected," 56% chose "as good as expected," and another 20% selected "satisfactory."

The survey was conducted online on March 29 and April 1, and 4,381 people responded. Of that number, 2,567 had purchased the unit, 787 had not, and 1,027 intended to buy a PlayStation2 console in the near future.

The DVD feature will be great, but there will be minor cases of slowdown and this is to be expected. PS2 is firstly a games console. DVD is just a bonus to give consumers value for money. Even when watching DVD's on a PC, it shows small sighns of slowdown.
