Konami interview
Posted by @ 12:18 PM, EDT
Core fired up an interview with Konami’s Yasuo Okuda about their soccer game, Jikkyou World Soccer 2000.
Here’s a slice:

Question: Referring back to the realism aspect, you can see individuals hairs and teeth in the close-up's of Jikkyou 2000. This level of detail is only possible on the PlayStation2?

Okuda-san: You looked close! [laughs..] The shapes of their heads, noses, and eyes are different as well. Real players also have different gestures when they score a goal or run in front of the camera, so we're working on that also. On the original PlayStation we could make 3D models, but they were very basic. Most of the player models were almost the same, and very plain looking with the same dot eyes. [laughs..]

Question: All right, final question. In previous titles there was an emphasis on knowing certain tactics in soccer playing, which made it hard for beginners to play. How is this being addressed in Jikkyou 2000 for the PlayStation2?

Okuda-san: Yes, that's an important aspect. We're trying to create something both beginners and experts can enjoy. There are basic controls for shooting and passing, but experts can pull off 'pass-through' and 'one-two' pass-shoot combinations as well.

Question: Is a new Contra in the works for us PS2 fans? We can't wait too long.

Okuda-san: Yes, well....after seeing what amazing quality we achieved with the PSX Contras, we will be investing some serious manpower to bring this ever-improving series to our valued Playstation2 and DreamCast players.

Question: Great! And how about a new Castlevania?

Okuda-san: That as well. In my view, Castlevania: SotN was a huge dissapointment. Why? Because it was in 2-d of course! Who wants 2-d these days? Nobody! The N64 versions were heads and shoulders above our poor PSX attempt, all because they were fully implemented in stunning 3-d. Never been done before! If payability has to take a shot to produce better graphics, so be it. Who cares anyway, by the time the gamer realizes they all suck, we'll have their money anyway! Suckers! HAHA.

Question: Hmmmm. Well, we all can count on Konami to bring out better and more advanced dancing games to the home front, correct?

Okuda-san: Oh yes! Expect to see massive coverage of all our amazing dancing games at the upcoming E3. Maybe a new Contra (3-d of course) if I feel nice that day. Sorry DC people, as you know we had to cancel the new Castlevania to move more resources so we can produce more of these revolutionary dancing titles. Besides, everyone knows that the Dreamcast sucks anyway, so why should we spend time making games that only morons will buy?

Question: Thank you for your time, Okuda-san!

Okuda-san: Thank you!
