U.S. version of PS2 to have modem & hard drive?
Posted by @ 12:33 PM, EDT
Bloomberg News posted an article about PS2 modem and hard drive….
Here’s a bit of it:

Sony is discussing the size and details of the disk drive and modem--features not included in the PlayStation2 console sold in Japan--with computer companies and hardware makers, the executive said. The additions will be announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo games show in Los Angeles, taking place May 11, 12 and 13.

"The PlayStation2 has tremendous capabilities, which are not all being used," said Alex Muromcew, a portfolio manager at Loomis Sayles, which manages $70 billion. Adding a modem and hard drive "upgrades it to the next level, though we'll need to see what it does to the price of the machine."

When You talk about hardrive and modem with the PS2, do you mean that with the modem you could have a internet connection with another friend's PS2 and play a multiplayer game? If so does that mean you need to hook it into a phone line or could you use a cable modem? Also yes, it would be really nice to see some online games come out for the PS2 like Quake 3 or Unreal or Half-Life that would make a very good rise in the PS2's profits. Oh well im just really confused with the hardrive and modem thing, im not sure what it really does, well whatever if anyone knows anything just email me please

I too think that we need single-player-games.
But i also think that we need those only-online-games like q3a!
I think that Final Fantasy XI should be something like Final Fantasy: a new glimpse or something. Like FFTactics. Im looking forward to the online-games, but ill always like to play games like Final Fantasy allon my own!

The whole console scene is shifting gears and I think it's a good thing. I buy most consoles (skipped Jaguar and Saturn) for
single and two player games, and use my PC for online FPS sessions. I'm sick of wasting money upgrading my PC to play games.
I received Q3A a while ago and couldn't plat it smoothly due to hardware issues. Instead of upgrading monthly, I'll be able to do it
every 5 years or so and use my PC for office/school only. Finally.

Valid points across the board...I wonder if we will be able to take out the modem if we already have a DSL or cable connection? I totally agree with games going online-only. I love Everquest, but unless you have a lot of real-life friends on, its hard to make online friends for more than a week because they forget who you are, therefore leaving you to solo in a game that was strictly meant for groups. FF XI looks like it will be a lot of fun, and they are going to have some kind of story to it (hopefully, if they can pull it off), but i really don't think they should call it Final Fantasy and tag a number to it because it really doesn't follow the flow. I am excited by the hard drive, but hopefully it will not be built into the machine so we can upgrade easier. I realize this is all a direct answer to Microcrap's Xbox, but this is something Sony should have done in the beginning...allow for internet play but focus on the broadband next year. Now they will begin to attract a much broader develepor variety, such as Verant, who ONLY make online games. Everquest, please launch!!

But if the PSX2 will have on-line games only like Final Fantasy XI (I thought, don't know for sure)
Many fans of the Final Fantasy series will not buy the game because of their phone bills. That's a shame isn't it? That might be the reason I'm not going to buy Final Fantasy XI.

It's a very good point you are making, Carborf. I'm sure single player only games will still be as strong as ever. Sure online gaming is fast becoming the in thing. And with news that Unreal Tournament is heading for Playstation2, it's only going to get bigger. I quite like the idea of online play, and I also like the old single to eight player games (Micromachines V3 is still the best multiplayer around). Things are changing very rapidly and we must learn to accept as many changes as is thrown at us. In my opinion, online gaming couldn't be better for the console inustry. It's just what it needs to compete with the much bigger PC industry.

PS2, DC and X-Box. All these new consoles will have Internet access sometime in their lifespan. This obviously will help immensely with multiplayer gaming, Internet browsing, no doubt. I'm just wondering what will become of the single-player game scene? Will we still get great single player games or will developers take the path of Quake or TF2 and make all their new games "multiplayer only"? I admit that I do enjoy playing with others, but there is a time and a place for singleplayer-only games. Phantasy Star Online for example. WHY WHY WHY did Sega decide to do this great game for online play??? An RPG!! I want an engrossing story(not to say that PSO won't have one), I want to meet the GAMES characters, adventure by myself, yea gimmie all that gold! I want to be damn selfish, the center of the game! Damn right! I don't want to bother with dealing with finding three people, when they have time between their working/schooldays, scheduling a time to all log-on, then having to deal with what THEY want to do, having to share items, weapons, etc. HELL NO! I know the game can be played single-player, but from what I've heard you need other players to get passed some points in the game. And playing with silent, boring bots? No way. SSorry to say, but I'd be looking forward to PSO a lot more if it were single-player only. See why I'm fearing online play going on-line? Will the days of great games like Half-life fade away and be replaced by mega-frag fests? I sure hope not.

Cost cost cost......what is this going to do to the price? I heard that the PS2 is costing Sony $480.00 a unit already, damn they are going to take some harsh initial losses. If they pack-in a 56k modem, forget it! If that were the case, I would rather buy a PS2 with no modem and save up for the higher bandwith one later to come. You can't do much with a 56k. As for the HD, cool!! Hopefully no patches though. This is great news!

Hmmmmmm good question. My guess is it won't be as high as many may think. At least if you're not happy with what you have, you can always change it. Unlike Sega, where it's all fixed into the machine.
