Gamespot is doing a Summoner character countdown, posting details about the different characters each weekday until the game is released at the PS2 launch.
IGN posted an interview with Summoner’s story write, Jason Scott.
Here’s a bit:

IGNPS2: What are the story's influences? Dungeons and Dragons? Science fiction? Star Wars? J.R.R. Tolkein? What?

Jason: All these influences you mention are definitely present in Summoner. Sometimes the allusions are conscious, but often it's simply in our bloodstream.
For example, we do have an evil emperor served by sinister masked warriors who are hunting down a hero with a destiny. That emperor came to power through the betrayal of a priesthood and government he had sworn to defend. The secret of the emperor's power is the long-forgotten lore of the Nhuvasarim, a sect of evil sorcerers who worshipped Laharah, the goddess of death. These are not deliberate parallels to Star Wars, and I do think they are archetypal elements of the heroic narrative. Nevertheless, it's funny when these connections become visible.
