Playstation 2 Memory Card Review

Backwards compatibility. That's what Sony promised we would have with the PS2 and more importantly the peripherals. We'll I've done some testing on different save and load situations and here is what I have found.

PS2 games require the PS2 memory card period. Although this may seem obvious to some most of the PS2 games out right now would fit on a standard Playstation memory card no problem. But this just doesn't work. If you attempt to save a game to a standard card it will give you an error message and tell you to insert a PS2 memory card. You can copy a Playstation game save to a PS2 memory card though without a problem but more on that a bit further down. You cannot copy any PS2 file to a Playstation memory card through the normal copy and delete we are all familiar with.

Playstation memory cards are a whole other mess to deal with. First off original Playstation games will not work with the new PS2 memory cards. It doesn't recognize the card as being there. So even though you can copy your Playstation game files to a PS2 memory card it really does you no good other that a backup of some sort. Secondly if the Playstation memory card is not in the first memory card slot then the game cannot recognize it as being there.

Pocketstation. I almost forgot about the Pocketstation until I saw it hanging from my wall. I found some game saves I thought were gone forever so I was glad to try it. But back to article. The Pocketstation shows up as just that a Pocketstation when you use the PS2's browser. It's very cool to see the Pocketstaion up there on the screen. But the Pocketstation finds the same fate as the standard Playstation memory card. So no more mini games on your Pocketstation with the new PS2 titles.

In conclusion, from what I can figure out is that the PS2 uses an all-new file system for game saves. This seems understandable but it also makes Sony's claim of backwards compatibility a little less truthful than desired. Yes the standard Playstation memory cards do work on the new system but only if you are playing Playstation games.
I just hope that the same is not true with some of the up coming games. Sure some of the games will take advantage of the new analog buttons, I just don't want it to become a requirement.
