Nooks & Crannies
PS2 Preview by Tom Lane

The first generation of titles for a new console typically provides some interesting and unique software. Sometimes this can be very successful, as it was for Blast Corps when it debuted on the Nintendo 64. Other times, however, it can be disastrous and result in a game that we would rather forget as has happened with several titles that will not be mentioned here. Software developer AndNow is hoping that their quirky little title Nooks & Crannies will be one of the early success stories on the Playstation's successor.

The game works like this. Two new species of beings, dubbed nooks and crannies, have been discovered in the far reaches of the universe. Both creatures have nasty dispositions that often result in them killing one another, but their fertile reproduction habits insure thriving population levels. In playing the game, you take on the role of breeding and molding your own tribe of nooks and crannies. This ought to appeal to anyone out there with a God complex.

In the beginning, you are given a certain strand of DNA to start with. You can, however, evolve your pets to behave how you want them to. You can also put them in varying situations such as fights or even kill them. A special AI algorithm enables your nooks and crannies to evolve according to what you do to them, not through a predetermined course. This open architecture allows you to do anything you wish with your tribe and observe new and often humorous behaviors in them.

If you think this sounds like a strange idea, it is. Several similar titles are in development for other consoles, so expect to see an explosion if this idea ends up working. Nooks & Crannies is being developed for the PC first, so substantial revisions may be made for the next Playstation. We're following the game's development closely to see if it has what it takes to stand out from the crowd or if it falls into weird game oblivion.
