Sky Surfer
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

Now here's a new type of game. It's surfing, but only your doing it at some 20,000 feet in the air! Sound cool? Well it is, and it should make for a cool videogame too, provided developer Idea Factory can pull it off correctly.

First, you should know that details about what players will be doing in the game are sketchy but we do know that so far there are two modes of play, Diving Mode and Practice Mode. In the diving mode players perform tricks and stunts on their airboard during the long plummet toward the ground to earn points, we don't know what the points are for but they could be for a number of things, like if there is a competition between you and the computer or something to that affect.

One of the more interesting features of Sky Surfer is the synchronized diving mode. I remember seeing on TV when something like 200 sky divers tried to set a new world record for the largest formation. I think that would be a good feature for a game like this. Maybe you could have a partner in the game and you set up a list of stunts to do for your performance, you go and practice then compete against other teams. The goal would be to perform each stunt in as close synchronization as you can. Or maybe even have moves that involve two divers to interact with each other!
That sounds like a great idea to me, lets hope they put something like that in the game. There will probably be many other game modes, one of the rumors is that you must hit balloons during a dive to get points.
The practice mode is where players can master their moves on the ground by using a big fan that suspends them in the air. Once the game is completed there will be a number of characters to choose from each with varied abilities in different areas.

This looks like a pretty sharp game in its early stages except maybe for a slight blandness in some textures. As you dive from 20,000 feet you can see the terrain way down below, meandering rivers, shimmering lakes, forests. It really looks like your way up in the air.

The future outlook for this game is pretty good considering that it has the potential to be an original type of game. Let's hope "Idea" Factory has lots of ideas for gameplay elements. If all goes well this title should be ready for the launch.
