Blood Omen 2
PS2 Staff Review by Michael Brady

Well everyone it time to say hello to the bad guy, again. Eidos Interactive with developers Crystal Dynamics have brought the second installment of the Legacy of Kain series to the Playstation 2 console, Blood Omen 2. Thats right folks, it is time to sharpen our fangs and sink our teeth into this blockbuster title! For gamers that may have missed the first excellent installment Legacy of Kain on the PS1, do not worry, the developers have done an excellent job of bringing us new fans up to speed on the story line. In this new title you will encounter Kain once again in a new and interesting adventure of revenge. Blood Omen 2 takes place two hundred years after the Legacy of Kain and centuries before the Soul Reaver series. You are Kain, a vampire that has had his army defeated by The Sarafan (an army of militant humans lead by the Sarafan Lord). Kain was defeated and has been revived to health by another vampire Umah. She tells Kain of his defeat and brings him up to speed as to the current events in Nosgoth and the status of the vampire race. With Kains heart full of revenge, he agrees to help Umah and her vampire resistance so that he may once again face the Sarafan Lord for a final confrontation.

Eidos has once again delivered us an epic title that promises the great graphics that we have become accustomed to seeing in their past blockbuster games. BO2 gives us that and much more, but first lets look at the graphics. The environments in this game are huge, just as we have been used to seeing in the past titles that are related to this series. They are well detailed and they do come to life. The slums of Meridian look real grimy and you can almost smell the stench in the air as you first feed on the lost souls that inhabit this decrepit town. The graphics give a very dark feel to the title that put you right into the theme of this title. I found myself thinking, "Wow who ever lives here deserves to be eaten" so it made the killing of humans much easier. Even the level of detail that has been put into the character design is awesome, Kain appears to live and breathe vampire vengeance. To see Kain change into different forms is a treat for the eyes of gamers that love great graphics. Just try to hide in the mist and sneak up on an enemy for the kill, it seems to be straight out of a horror flick, but even better because we as gamers are at the control of Kains every move. The level of graphic quality in this title is great and should not leave any fans of the PS2 disappointed. I was also impressed with the detail in the prey around you, humans that is. Up close you can see the detail in their facial animations as they converse with one another. Graphics in this title will satisfy the most eye candy hungry gamers, its great you need to see and play this title.

The sound in this game is awesome as well. I loved to hear that the voice acting in this title as Eidos has found great actors to fill the roles of the characters that are in this game. They come to life and they have personality and presence on stage, I mean in the game. The voice acting brings the characters to life and it adds even more to the ora of the game. The sound effects that are in this title are quite stellar as well, to hear the sounds of a human being bludgeoned to death by claws or a mace, to hear it alone will turn your stomach. The screams alone will have you quivering, in other word gamers this title is not for the weak of heart. Its just good to see that the developers of this title have not missed a step in terms of creating a game with great graphics and sound quality.

The game play in this title is deep as well. There are many methods of attack that Kain has at his disposal. First there are his hand attack moves. To lock onto an enemy you hold down the R1 button and then to attack you must press the square button. Kain can pull off many different combination attacks buy pressing the square button repeatedly. Also grab an enemy one must press the triangle button, and once you have the enemy by the throat you may press the square button to perform a primary attack and then they can be thrown by pressing the triangle button. To use the dark gifts (magic) that Kain possesses you press the R2 button and the circle button. Dark gifts include abilities such as super jump, charm, telekinesis, and there are more attacks when you get to certain levels in the rage meter is at full. This title that Eidos has brought us provides everything we could ever as for. It was amazing to see how the controls of this title allow you to become a vampire, so it is not so bad being the bad guy after all, after a while it gets to be quite entertaining.

Well by now I dont think that there should be a question if this game is worth the purchase. But, for those that are hard of understanding and cannot read between the lines, this is a title that is a must have for PS2 owners. It is also great for the fans of this series, the storyline alone will have you mesmerized. It is worth the cash trust me besides, these games are better than most movies out there in the cinema. Hey Eidos, let me recommend a great idea in case no one over there has thought of it. Make this into a movie or a cartoon series or something. Just put this into other forms of media so that the world can see what they are missing, but with the popularity of the PS2 taking over globally, I guess the world already knows!!!
