Eve of Extinction
PS2 Staff Review by Michael Brady

The long awaited title is here and we have heard so much about this game and now its time for us to check out all the hype!! I have heard about this title for quite sometime now, and the early screen shots made my mouth drop! Eidos is bringing their action adventure game Eve of Extinction to the PS2 and it plans to give us more bang than we can handle. With what is out on the market right now, it will be interesting to see what this game has to offer.Just what does EOE have that will cause other action adventure titles to become extinct?! Well, lets find out!!!

Every action adventure game has to come with the goods! Meaning good graphics, good story line, and good game play. At least that is how I like to gauge it! Wouldn't you? Well the graphics in this game are like everything you may have seen before, that's right, you read me correctly! Graphically there is nothing that impresses me about this title. There is nothing eye catching about the design of the characters. The main character looks like your average Joe on the street and your enemies ("The Agents" as they are called) look like business men with a funny eye attachment on their head! The main character has a sword that used to be his girlfriend attached to his arm!! How lame is that!!! I'll get into the story later fellas. The environments that you must move through are somewhat boring, they all look somewhat the same and the camera angles that you may sometimes find yourself viewing can be kind of awkward. While running it can be frustrating to keep up with the direction that you came from, an item that did impress me was the way that the enemies follow you around in the environments. But wait a minute? Every game has that now, so I take that back! The lighting effects that you will see when a boss or enemy is defeated look alright but nothing spectacular. Although the graphics are not breath taking, they will suffice on looks alone, they are not bad, but they are nothing that you have not seen!

Let's see what the game play has to offer. One thing that I will give this title, is the attempt of different modes of play throughout the adventure. In certain scenes the game will move to a cut scene and you must time a one button action to have a positive outcome for the main character. It is reminiscent of Dragons Lair. Excuse me, but has this not been done before, over and over again! The controls in this game are very quirky. To jump and grab onto ledges is frustrating, sometimes the character would not react in sequence with what the joystick command was. The movement in this game also needs attention. At times I noticed that the characters move like they are on ice, it just doesnt seem like they are running through a real environment. The whole foreground and background battling in some fighting sequences seems well... weird. At times I thought I was slashing a foe with my girlfriend in hand (hahahahaha) that was right in front of me, but they were further back from my reach. Poor quality here folks, it seems that they have put every element found in all the action fighters and put them all into one game, but they have not mastered one element.

The sound quality is not much better either! The voice acting in this game is very weak! I found that at times the character would say the same thing over and over, but in different situations. It just got too boring after a while. Hey, heads up fellas, spend the time to make the game at least sound interesting, this guy who is the main character sounds like he is trying too hard! The music in this game doesn't set the mood, it just sounds like it was thrown in for the sake of needing music. Sure you can't have an action game with no music, but it needs to mean something??

Okay.. overall I have to say that this game is best compared to an action adventure film on a B or C film budget. Honest, the story line to this title is weak and hard to follow from the jump! At times you are given cinema screens to look at to explain the history, but they must have run out of money and had to explain everything on a black screen with words and weak voice acting. When I first saw this game it was like watching a B or C film aspiring to be like the Matrix. In short folks save your hard earned loot and wait for the next real deal to spend your money on. I'm sorry, but I was disappointed in this title, so let me save you the trouble of being disappointed by having you read this.
