Herdy Gerdy
PS2 Staff Review by Michael Brady

Ever wondered what happened to all the children game titles that used to once be the hot sellers for all game systems? It seems that the game industry has grown up with the times, and now more than ever there are games suited for the adult audiences. Well this review is for all the children out there that are looking for a cool title, and also for the older fans that still are in touch with their inner child! Game producing giant Eidos has not forgotten about their younger fans. You may remember them from such titles as Tomb Raider, Eve of Extinction just to name a few. Well they are back with their new innovative game branded Herdy Gerdy. Let me tell you folks, old or young, this game will have you interested by the name of the title alone.

Herdy Gerdy is a new game that brings forth new concepts that will be a breath of fresh air to us gamers. We are used to seeing the 3D super amplified graphics that are present in alot of the new titles that are now out or that are soon on its way, however Eidos has chosen to go with a slightly simplified look to this blockbuster title. They have choosen to use the cell animation technique. For myself it was great to see this, I longed to see a game like this that is not cartoon series or movie based, that is using the cell animation. The opening sequence to this game is like watching something from Loonie Tunes or Disney, it takes your breath away. The amount of detail that has been put into the world environments is stunning. Playing this title will actually make you feel like you are controlling your own cartoon, or you can kick back and watch this game and be entertained.

Herdy Gerdy graphics are very nice but they do have only one draw back, the animation is not as smooth as it could be, and I am not speaking about frame rate here. There appears to be some sort of fuzz like coat around the images and the characters. Maybe I need to have a HD-TV, but people that are average television owners like myself may see what I am getting at. It is not a great deal but you identify with what I am seeing. However, the game does look awesome and it will set a standard for other companies to follow.

Now what is a great looking game like this without the game play? Well I must say Eidos has made sure to back up their new title with some unique innovation. Now the controls are very user friendly and there is little to master as there are very few buttons to learn the control of, but what will suprise gamers is the task that your character, Herdy, must master. Check this out! You have to master herding techniques for different species that inhabit the vast environments that you play in. You must lean the nature of the species that you are herding and use different strageties to become sucesssful at this game. Now how is that for being an innovative. It is herd or be eaten, dont think that you are at the top of the food chain here, you will have to do some hauling ass of your own once you encounter the bosses. It is just refreshing to see a game company use unique gameplay and implement them into the story line effectively, props to you guys at Eidos!!

The sound in this game is great too. The music in this game suits the cartoonish environment that encompasses this title. I was also very impressed with the voice acting in this game. They have taken alot of time into developing this title and the interesting characters bring it to life. All the sound effects are there to give the game its environmental feel. From birds chirping to hearing crickets in the background make the game really come alive.

Well the final result, is this game one worthy of the library collection? I would say yes, it doesnt matter what age you are this game if fun, innovative, and real cool to play. For the adult audience the characteres may seem to young, but there is alot that this game has to offer, so it doesnt matter what age you are! Do not let age deter you from this title, I know I made sure to dig up that inner child in me and buy this title with all my allowance and piggy bank money. No longer delay, this title is too great to miss!!!
