Ridge Racer V
PS2 Reader Review by Insomniak

If you put your neck on the line and pay up for the PS2 then driving and fighting are your only real options at the moment! Ridge Racer 5 came with my system when i bought it, and i was therefore eager to fire it up and see what all the hoo-ha is about! Having been an avid PC racer for years now (following the Need For Speed series from one to five), i've seen the PC graphics and speed continue to challenge and beat the consoles at their own game. Now the PS2 needs to set higher targets to avoid becoming obsolete before it even becomes available to the general public!

The game itself fulfils the basic requirements of an arcade conversion. There is no denying that it looks stunning, runs at a fast frame rate, and has an easy-to-navigate menu system. On the flip-side it has to be said that it is exactly that - an arcade conversion; simplistic controls, basic gameplay, predictable opponents, and no damage indicators.

Like all arcade ports you are faced with the challenge between instant attraction (which RR5 has) and longevity/"return to it in 6 weeks" factor - and with the current hefty export costs (close to US$80) thats a pretty pricey bit of quick fun! One plus in its court it that the game is completely playable for the non-Japanese speaker (that means most of us!) as menus are almost all in English - although again maybe that highlights the simpistic nature of the game. Car choices are basic - half a dozen Mazda lookalikes with exciting colours (yeah right, really *exciting*) and you are 'offered' upgrades, as opposed to being able to just gear up your car and head out onto the highways all souped up to the eyeballs. This provides some element of challenge, but half the comeback factor of games like this is the ability to go for a 'no-holes-barred' challenge!

So, do i recommend this title or not? Well, bit of a game of two halves this one. If you want cheap thrills and a fast bit of fun then go for it! If you want a bit more depth and more realistic driving then go for Driving Emotions PS2 which offers far more realism and enjoyment (once you realise that its more of a driving 'simulator' that an arcade racer) without any compromise on graphics or speed. Alternatively get your teeth into GT2000 (haven't got it *yet*!).

In the meantime, keep playing and reviewing and make the most of what i still believe will be the console for the next 5 years.....
