Stretch Panic Media
Posted by @ 4:55 PM, EDT
This is by far the weirdest game I've ever seen:
Not only have all of these games featured innovative play mechanics and near-perfect gameplay, but nearly every one has also presented some of the most eccentric character designs and story backdrops that have ever been introduced in a videogame. Yet as odd as some of the stories and characters have been, none can come close to being as peculiar as what's offered up in the company's latest, Stretch Panic for PlayStation 2.
NBA Street review - Comments (0)

We added a review of EA’s latest basketball game:
Even though games like this can look like the next best thing, it is gameplay that will ultimately determine the fate or success of the title. Fortunately, the same winning formula in SSX has been recreated for NBA Street. Easy yet precise control. Controlling the 3 players on your team is extremely simple. The controls are fluid and quite responsive to your action and re-action of the game. The meat of the game is found in the City Circuit mode. Here you must tour with your team to earn rewards and new NBA players to choose from. Every few matches, you are required to take a Street Challenge against a superfly local from the Street Legends. If you are able to defeat the legend, you will have the opportunity to add him to your roster. Slowly, you will begin to collect a large collection of both NBA players and Street Legends.

More info on the US arcade version of Virtua Fighter 4:
We received word from Sega-AM2 today confirming plans to release a new version of their arcade fighter, Virtua Fighter 4. Tentatively dubbed 'Version B,' the game will begin testing in Japanese arcades later this month. Reportedly, the game will feature more balanced characters, added combos, and ranking system changes. According to company representatives, the changes reflect early feedback received from VF4 players in Japan. Unfortunately, Version B units won't initially be compatible with the card ranking system. Moreover, insiders suggest Sega-AM2 will use Version B as a basis for the American incarnation of Virtua Fighter 4.

Loads and loads of movies and screens!! Check it out:
It helps, furthermore, that this is still one of the most polished games we've seen on the PS2. It doesn't necessarily look it until you see the game running yourself, because the perspective is always far away and the atmosphere is generally too dark for screenshots to show very much. This game is running on a rock-solid 3D engine, though, with completely rotatable dungeons, brilliant animation for nearly every interactive element (of which there are many), and first-rate lighting effects of all different kinds. Dark Alliance progresses from strength to strength -- every new area presents something new and different to enjoy.

This is a giant leap ahead of the Nintendo 64 version:
So naturally when we sat down to play the latest addition to the franchise, Extreme G 3 for PlayStation 2 (also coming to GameCube), we had our reservations. But after only a few minutes of racing through detailed roller-coaster roadways that looped and corkscrewed up and down, and blazing past free-fall drops at speeds fast enough to break the sound barrier, we finally understand what Acclaim has been aiming for all along. Extreme G 3 is a surprise. It's the high-speed, frantic cyber-racer that its predecessors could have been, and the franchise has finally entered into the same league as rivals Wipeout and F-Zero. With XG3 scheduled to hit PlayStation 2 in August and launch with GameCube November 5, we invite you to see what all the hubbub is about in this two-part feature.

Namco Talks Tekken 4 - Comments (0)

Find out why walls and characters were added to Namco's latest fighter.
Arcadia: First, I'd like to ask you about the new characters. How did you try to differentiate the new character Steve Fox from Brian, they're both essentially kick boxers?
Harada: Yes, though Steve is more of a plain boxer. He doesn't have any special types of kicks or anything. He can do defensive kicks, like when getting up from a fall, but not much more than that.
Arcadia: So he punches even when pressing the kick buttons?
Harada: Yes, we were worried about that inconsistency, though we've decided to make the kick buttons perform sways and special moves. He also has some wrestling style moves.

These ones are HUGE...but they're worth checking out:
As you probably well know by now, Splashdown is one IGNPS2's most wanted games of the year, and was listed in our Must-Have PS2 Games of 2001 feature. Splashdown is a stunning looking seadoo game, using fully licensed skidoo watercrafts, and balances a fine line between arcade and sim gameplay, and some of the most technically impressive water effects we have ever seen in a game -- and yes, this most certainly includes WaveRace.

Fresh screens and spanking new movies for your viewing pleasure. Check it out:
The birth of a new console system is like the beginning of a new life for game companies, or to push the metaphor just a little, like a new life-ladder. Each time a new system begins its five-or-so year lifespan, developers have the chance to climb on and try to show the world a better, more improved side of themselves. You can imagine how well this works for companies that have something to prove, or for emerging companies, such as the strange newcomer of sorts, Universal Studios Interactive.

Extermination review - Comments (0)

We added a review of Deep Space’s survival horror game:
For fans of the survival horror genre, you have been there and done that in most of Extermination. Deep Space has however thrown in a few elements found in other genres in an attempt to deepen the gameplay experience and add to a somewhat questionable plot. The in game controls are easy to use and navigate through the various menus. Finally a developer that has abandoned the dreaded digital pad in favor of analog control. Moving the character is a breeze. My only complaint has to do with the action button. The action button does a lot more than open doors. It also serves as a jump button where jumping is needed. The problem is there are a few instances where I thought I could jump and my character did nothing more than run off the cliff or edge. Death at the hands of a design flaw is never pretty.

We added a review of Take-Two Interactive’s rescue game:
Command one of five rescue helicopters in order to save people and animals from towering infernos. Once you approach the blazing buildings, lower your rescue jumper and rescue harness in order to snatch up the people. After a successful rescue, extra points will be awarded if you can extinguish the flames with your water cannons and water bombs. Controlling the helicopters is easy thanks to the control lay-out on the Dual Shock 2. The response of the analog stick allows you to move in ever so close to pick up those hard to reach fire victims. Further stages become more challenging as unexpected updrafts and explosions hinder your progress without some careful yet quick thinking.
ESPN National Hockey Night review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:23 AM, EDT
We added a review of Konami’s hockey game:
The gameplay is awful. Even on the fastest game setting, players skated so slowly and stiffly. Defensive players rarely go after the puck carrier but rather back into the defensive zone and basically stand around and do nothing while the offence has a shooting spree on the goalie. The controls are unresponsive as well. Making a nice turn or deke is impossible.

Capcom releases a pair of new, must-see MPEG video of its potential "Game of the Year" title. Check it out:
After delivering the smash-hit action-adventure Onimusha, it might be difficult for a developer to come back with a new game even more graphically ravishing, original, and just downright fun to play. It looks like the prolific folks at Capcom's headquarters in Japan have somehow managed to do it, and Devil May Cry is the proof. A playable demo of Devil May Cry will be distributed with the September release of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X.

Dig down in new cars and new, interactive environments. In this new game players have the chance to explore a totally different set of landscapes, which are rarely seen in videogames. While the first game delivered essentially the standard forest, desert and planes landscapes, SR2 is set to deliver locales set in Afghanistan and Vietnam, and will include the kinds of things one might see in those areas, such as palatial temples, ancient ruins, prosperous fishing towns and small, bombed-out villages.
NASCAR Heat 2002 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:11 PM, EDT
We added a review of EA’s racing game:
Controlling the cars in Heat 2002 is a breeze thanks to MGI making the car physics realistic yet approachable. Since the options allow either arcade racing or simulation racing, you will have the option in simulation to tweak all aspects of your car. As some games add this option and sometimes it does not make a difference in gameplay, we decided to play around with the car settings. We were pleasantly surprised to discover it makes a major difference in how your car will perform. For example, when the gear ratio was set inappropriately, our engine exploded within seconds of starting the race. Alternatively, we sent the camber at odd positions only to find our cars sliding all over the track. Therefore, it takes some precision in order to tweak your car to get the perfect performance out of it. Not to worry, for those new to the mumble jumble of NASCAR racing, the manual does a wonderful job of outlining everything and providing some advice to assist you along the way.

Escape From Monkey Island review - Comments (0)

We added a review of Lucasart’s latest Monkey Island game:
Aside from collecting objects, Guybrush must socialize with the Tri-Island area locals. When speaking to someone, a list of your possible responses is listed at the bottom of the screen. It’s generally not too difficult to figure out where the conversation should be headed, but there are oodles of responses to pick from, and this is where the bulk of the game’s humor lies. Sometimes a retort is too hilarious not to pick, because you want to hear what happens, fortunately Lucasarts recognized this and allows you to move the conversation along at your own pace, and doesn’t penalize you for having a little fun with the island’s inhabitants.

Gran Turismo 3: A-spec review - Comments (1)

We added a review of GT3:
Unlike GT2, this game's control was designed with the analog stick in mind. Players now have a very fine degree of precision when they steer. Not only that but the gas and brake are pressure sensitive. GT3 makes the best use of the Dual Shock's pressure sensitive buttons I have seen yet. It is easy to control your revs just before the green light so it is possible to get a faster start depending on the rpm's your revving at during the start. I think these highly improved physics are what make GT3 the most different from it's predecessors and make it a far more enjoyable game to play.
Army Men: Air Attack 2 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:05 PM, EDT
We also posted a review of 3DO’s Army Men game, Air Attack 2:
Aside from the fact that Air Attack 2 feels just like Green Rogue, and the big green guy is now a helicopter, this game is a lot more fun to play. One major improvement is now you can actually aim in 360 degrees instead of only four directions like in Green Rogue. There is a primary weapon, which is upgradable, a secondary weapon with limited ammo and a winch, which is used for many things and an important aspect of the game. The winch is used for picking up objects that are key to completing missions. But you can also pick up other objects, which can be used as a weapon against the Tan forces.
Scariest Silent Hill 2 Movie Released - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:29 PM, EDT
The scariest movie ever released for Silent Hill 2 is here. Check it out:
As technology improves, developers are able to instil their software with a depth of atmosphere capable of provoking a dramatic range of emotional responses from the player. This, of course, requires a great deal of skill, but with the silicon infrastructure finally, firmly in place, a handful of developers have managed to illicit that most elusive of reactions genuine fear. This new movie gives you a good idea of what to expect from Konami's Silent Hill 2, showing healthy doses of both in-game footage and remarkable CG. What becomes apparent with frightening alacrity is that the game is one sick beast.
Malice On PS2? - Comments (0)

Malice is no longer going to be an Xbox exclusive? Here's more info:
After months of speculation and confusion, it has finally been revealed that Vivendi Universal is to publish Argonauts graphically stunning Malice. The hammer-wielding heroine has seemingly been passed from pillar to post in the last few months, from Microsoft championing it as a shining paradigm of the kind of software only Xbox is capable of producing, to Argonaut stating it had multiformat plans for the title. Out of the obfuscatory mists of rumour and dissimulation, however, has shone a shining beacon of truth in the shape of Argonauts somewhat stodgy financial report to the City. "Argonaut gave the first official confirmation of the publishing deal with Vivendi, stating the game would now be published on both Xbox and PS2."
New Wave Rally Screens - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:11 PM, EDT
Japanese developer Opus has a somewhat unfortunate track record as far as water-based videogames -- it was, as you might know if you paid close attention to the fine print, the team responsible for Surfing H3O, generally considered to be one of the worst PS2 games yet. It's probably not quite fair to judge Wave Rally, Opus' upcoming jetski racer, on the basis of that track record, though -- H3O was presumably developed for ASCII on a shoestring, while Eidos is putting a fair amount of muscle behind Rally. H3O, furthermore, had some pretty good water (just pretty boring everything else), which is a good base from which to start this new game.

In case you missed it, Ico is one of the featured demos that you'll find on the PlayStation Underground Jampack Summer 2001 that just came out last week. This demo alone is probably worth the full $7.99 retail price that you'll have to pay for the Jampack because it'll give you a taste of what could be the year's best adventure game across all platforms. Sure, there are a lot of games that "could be" this and that, but from that four to five hours that we've played of the preview build of the game, Ico looks like it's going to be the real deal.

Thankfully Acclaim has put its eggs into the Sony basket this time round and aims to improve upon what was already a good solid game. As Mike LeRoi, a.k.a. Shadowman, you must take control of the Liveside and Deadside to stop hordes of evil masterminds from ruling both worlds. New features packed into the follow-up include the ability for LeRoi to use both hands during combat, nothing revolutionary, but a step in the right direction. Magic staffs unleashing fireballs in one hand and a trusty shotgun in the other has to be the way forward.

We added a review of Terminal Reality’s racer:
The vehicles tend to bounce too much and most of your time will be spent trying to recover from a mistaken turn or trying to drive up a small hill. As a result the pace is inconsistent. On the bright side the competitions are structured in such a way that even the loser gets a little bit of money. Regardless, many will find it laborsome to work their way through the game in order to get enough money to upgrade their vehicles to more powerful models. The competition is also unbalanced

Loads of new screens and the first high-quality movies. Check it out:
Now, it looks as if everyone's hat is in the ring. First, Sega unveiled and tested Virtua Fighter 4; then, Team Ninja stole the spotlight by boosting the Xbox with Dead or Alive 3; last of all, but probably not least in the long run, Namco has unveiled Tekken 4 to the world. The battle between this generation of 3D fighters is now scattered incomplete across a few different theaters, the arcades and at least two different consoles, but it looks as if Tekken may be poised to gain the greatest success a second time running. Tekken 4 features the kind of graphical improvements you'd expect, but more important, there is a completely new stage system joining other additions to an already complex gameplay heritage. The fight of your life? Perhaps so...
