E3 2002 - Part1
By: Aaron Thomas

Sony held their pre-show press conference early Tuesday morning, and Psx2Central was there to cover all of the action. Compared to the Nintendo and Microsoft events, Sonys was rather subdued, but they were also supremely confident. They touched on a number of subjects, and a number of games heres the meat and potatoes of the event:

Sales and market share: If you walked away from the press event knowing one thing, it was that Sony has sold a ton of games, a ton of systems, and they plan on selling even more in the upcoming year.

Online: Sonys going online on August 27th with release of their Network Adaptor, which will allow for both Broadband and Analog connections. While Sony is quick to point out that 56k users wont be left in the dark, it is up to the developer to decide if the game will support and analog connection. The Network Adapter will retail for $50 and include ISP software, game demos, and a coupon for Twisted Metal Black: Online.

Madden 2003 was unveiled along with SOCOM: Navy Seals as the premier games for Sonys online network. Madden was demonstrated live on the soundstage by Minnesota Viking Dante Culpper, who went up against Jevon Kearse who was across the country. John Madden chimed in via satellite to provide commentary for the game, which seemed to run well, but there were a few noticeable hiccups during gameplay.

SOCOM was demonstrated by four teams in various locations, two at the event, one at the Metreon in San Francisco, and another at Sony headquarters. The game, which involves combat between different teams of seals looked great, and appeared to run flawlessly. Sony knows theyve got a hit on their hands with the game, so expect to hear much more about it in the near future.

Resident Evil: Online: There wasnt a heck of a lot of information about this title other than the short trailer that played during the event. While the series has been touted as a Nintendo exclusive, it was right there for all to see - Resident Evil is back on the Playstation. At Nintendos event, when asked about the game, they didnt really answer what was going on, so well have to wait and see.

The rest of the games:

The Getaway Finally seeing the light of day, The Getawaylooks to play a lot like GTA3, but with more movie-like production values. To answer your question, no, the game does not look as good as those screenshots floating around the net, though it does look good.

Dark Cloud 2: Sony didnt say a peep about this game, but it was shown very briefly in snippets during the show. Scheduled for release late this year or early next year, the game has a cell-shaded look to it, but promises to play like the first game.

Ratchet and Clank: A much-hyped platformer that didnt do much to impress the crowd. Sony is marketing Ratchet and his sidekick Clank as mascot characters, so expect to hear much more on the duo.

Also shown: ATV Offroad Fury2, Disneys Treasure Planet, Jet X2O, Primal, My Street, and Everquest.

Tune in for more updates on the happenings at E3.
