Crossfire
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

Crossfire, also called X-Fire was first shown at the Tokyo Game Show at around 30% complete. Most of what is known about the game is based on that showing and at that point Crossfire has a ways to go before it reaches completion. It will be published by Square but is actually being developed by Electronic Arts.
The following is a run-down of the storyline.
In 2076, North America is struck with a meteorite that brings a new disease to earth with it. Thousands of people die and soon the infected area is placed under quarantine and closed off by the government. After a few months the government sends in an inspection team but they are suddenly captured by a group of people that proclaim themselves the new leaders of this area. The government must now send in a team of specialists to discover what happened to the inspectors.

The game allows up to four players that can choose from four characters to enter the campaign. The computer will automatically take control of any characters not controlled by a human. If you play with any computer team mates, you will not be able to directly control them but you can assign them orders to perform such as "caution", "attack" and "guard". These commands can be quickly accessed because each one is assigned to a button on the PS2 controller.

Here are some brief descriptions of the characters and their main points.
John Gray Conners - an experienced soldier and an excellent strategist who is very crafty with weapons and explosives.
Jado Gazule - a former football player who was recruited to the team for his athletic abilities. He can handle heavy weaponry and tanks.
Melinda Estevez - used to be a medical student but is now brought to the team for her strengths in using firearms.
Maya Swanson - the sniper, she is not cut out for the battlefield but she is a valuable asset to the team as an information/computer specialist.

Team cooperation will be a big factor in the game as well as having a good plan of action but don't think this will be a slow, boring process. There will be plenty of action that will test player's combat skills like ducking, dodging, covering and sneaking around. But there will also be times when just simply opening up and letting your gun do all the work, may be the best plan too. Hopefully, EA will come up with a good balance of depth of strategy and action as well.

So far Crossfire hasn't impressed anyone with its graphics just yet. They are ok, but "ok" is not going to cut it on PS2. I am not sure if there are new screen shots of the game yet but the first batch looked grainy and lacking in detail.
However, supposedly each character will comprise of 6000 polygons and have more than 2500 motion captured animations!
Well, this either tells us that they are lying or have high expectations for the game and I have a feeling that it's going to shape up once it nears completion.
