Kessen
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

Kessen will be the first real time strategy game for PS2 and it is being developed by Koei, a company with a reputation of making great strategy games in Japan.
Set to launch with the PS2 in Japan, Kessen looks to be one of the ideal titles to show off the PS2's power. Kessen is similar to the board game Risk in that it takes place in medieval times with knights in shining armour on horsebacks and huge armies clashing on bloody battlefields. There are not many details about how the game actually plays but we can expect can expect to have complete control over armies and be able to control every aspect of them. We should be able to set up complex and realistic battle strategies and this game will definitely make you think hard about every move on the battlefields much like a game of chess, only this is much more fun AND exciting.

From the available screen shots, one can expect highly detailed, realistic graphics that fit the time frame in which the battles take place. The knights on horses look very crisp and extremely realistic. The amount of depth perception on the battlefields gives you a sense of controlling a massive swarm of warriors.
On the PS2, it will be possible to display at least 500 warriors on screen at once so you can imagine that the scope of this game is absolutely huge. We can only hope that gameplay and sound will be this good. Although Kessen uses full motion video cutscenes, by the looks of its in-game graphics, cutscenes could have easily been rendered in real-time. But it is possible that the FMV's are simply enhanced in-game graphics.

This title will be released on DVD, a format that has a much larger storage capacity than CDs that suggests that maybe we can expect lots of FMV sequences throughout the game. Hopefully, Koei is planning a very special game for PS2 fans, seeing that they are pouring 4 million into this game. Who knows, maybe this will be the one that redefines real time strategy games.
