Aside from being the name of the latest port, revolution ideally describes Ubi Soft's immensely successful mascot, Rayman. The Rayman series has swept across every console and even the PC. Now, the game is preparing to turn some heads on the PS2.
Rayman 2: Revolution is almost identical to Rayman 2 and the graphics, which are some of the best seen on any console, are looking at least as good as the Dreamcast version. But with the PS2, there is room for improvement. The Rayman series is well known for it's lusciously designed and textured 3D worlds and amazing effects. And for a lead character with no joints, he's pretty popular!
Although many aspects of the game will remain the same such as the controls and play mechanics will see some changes. In Revolution there will be brand new level designs with a more non-linear approach to completing the levels. However this poses concern for me personally. In Rayman 2, the designers did an excellent job with implementing 2D gameplay elements into the 3D realm. I thought this was great since it focused the player on specific tasks which made the game more challenging rather than having players wonder around looking for that last key to unlock door X. However, Ubi Soft promises Rayman 2 Revolution will be the most challenging game of the series and will see Rayman fighting up to 10 enemies at once! There is also a hint of an RPG element in Revolution. Details are scarce but there will be some sort of character build-up so Rayman will be able to augment and acquire new powers in some way as the game progresses.
Ubi Soft is feverishly coding the game for PS2 and believe it or not, they are telling us to expect its release sometime in November 2000! Well I don't know if they can hold to that word but if they do, this game will be one of the hottest sellers on PS2 for the holidays.
