Ridge Racer V
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

The legacy of the Ridge Racer series will be carried on to the PS2 by Namco.
They have been working very hard on this title in order to fit it into the first batch of PS2 games although it probably won't make it as a launch title in Japan, Namco plans to release its racer as a launch title for the PS2 in North America. Ridge Racer V is only a tentative name, the official name has not been finalized yet. But despite the lack of an official title, this game is already well underway and is looking very impressive. Already its graphics have equaled that of those seen for Gran Turismo 2000, which says a lot!

At the Tokyo Game Show, Namco presented footage of its new Ridge Racer game that showed four highly detailed cars racing on-screen simultaneously with absolutely no drop in frame rates. Ahh, this is truly a refreshing moment. It's been a long time in the making but finally we can say goodbye to low framerates for good (hopefully).
This game puts some of those PS2 graphics features to use like anti-aliasing.
You won't see jagged edged cars anymore, now they are streamlined models that are accurate designs of the real life cars. Reflection mapping is used in just the right amount to give the most realistic metallic look I've seen yet in any racing game. A minor gripe about Gran Turismo 2000 is that its cars have too much shine on them.

Anyone who has played previous Ridge Racer games will know that these games offer players top quality arcade action. The same is true for Ridge Racer 5, fast and furious arcade action. This title looks to be a perfect alternative for those who don't go for the racing sims.
