The Getaway
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

To give you an idea of what this game is about, just think of Grand Theft Auto. Although it isn't known how much The Getaway will copy from GTA, there are sure to be similarities in the overall design of the game. For instance, there will be lots of adrenaline pumping car chases through busy city streets and certain missions that players will be faced with that will involve reckless, fool-hardy driving in many different vehicles as you race from one hot-spot to the next. I don't know if drug dealing will play any part in the game but keep those fingers crossed cause you never know!

The story line sounds pretty good. You play the role of a professional bank robber who has his son kidnapped by this Charlie Jolson guy. He is holding your son as ransom. The character you play as (Mark) is trying to break free from the crime scene and clean up his act but finds himself reverting back to his old instincts and is willing to do whatever it takes to get back his son. (auhhhhh)

One of the most intriguing things about this game is that it takes place in a highly realistically detailed London environment. 70 square miles of the city have literally been recreated and put in this game and are perfectly accurate to real life. There will be many characters to interact with during your quest. But the action will consist primarily of running around killing people and of course driving around cars.... over 50 are planned to be included to help you navigate the immense world around you. Along your travels expect to find historical landmarks such as Big Ben and Kensington Palace. The car models are based on real ones but we don't know if they will be fully licensed yet. In complete contrast to the real life cars, the handling of them is arcade-like and wild. Players will be able to pull off spectacular stunts like turning on two wheels, big jumps and skids. Think of Driver and you'll have a good idea of what the control is like. Another cool thing about the environments is that the city streets are packed with movement and commotion just like in a real city. There's traffic, pedestrians walking across the street and many other obstacles to watch out for. Kind of reminds me of what I went through in driver Ed!

Immediately after you read this preview I want every one of you to check out the pics for this game! My first words when I saw them were holy sh!t! The graphics splendor is unsurpassed by any other PS2 game. In fact, no other game even comes close to achieving the visuals seen in The Getaway. I mean it, you won't believe your eyes. The buildings are so accurately detailed you can practically see every grain and pit in the concrete walls and the architecture is dead on. I swear, sometimes you'll wonder if you are looking at an actual photograph. And the sky reflections on the windows are so realistic it's scary! The vehicles are extremely well modeled and detailed, with very polished surfaces that are almost too perfect. Although the pedestrians don't look quite as stunning as the buildings and cars, I can't wait to see them in motion. Man it sure looks like we're in for a graphical treat for this game.

E3 is coming up very soon so there should be much more information let out of the bag about gameplay and types of cars. Even though the PS2 is a very powerful machine I do have my doubts as to how good the framerates can be with such intricately detailed graphics. But they will have to be pretty good for a fast paced game like this one to be successful. No go check out those pics! They will blow your mind.
