Armored Core2: Another Age
PS2 Staff Review by Aaron Thomas

Armored Core2 was a strong launch title for the Playststion2 when it launched in October of 2000. Despite the fact that it was a solid game, it was overshadowed by the higher-profile launch games like Tekken Tag, Madden 2001, SSX and Ridge Racer V. Armored Core2: Another Age is basically a stand-alone expansion that provides 100 new missions, faster gameplay, and improved graphics. Its not different enough to change your mind if you didnt like AC2 but if you did like the original, this one is right up your alley.

This expansion takes place a few years after Leos Klains coup on Mars. As in Armored Core2 you are a Raven, a mercenary who gives their services to the highest bidder. This means that theres not linear path through the game, you can make your own choices as to the jobs you take, and the story revolves around them. A variety of different mission objectives are included in the game, and since there are many different paths to take, you can accept them based on your own personal strengths and weakness.

In addition to a strong first-player mode, Another Age has a robust multi-player mode as well. Of course, theres the standard versus stages, but Agetec has also included co-op play on certain missions. The multi-player modes are well-designed and all run smoothly, which makes them a great way to squeeze more replay out of an already deep title. The title was originally planned to include online support, but with Sony not having any clear online direction when the game was being finished, those plans were scrapped. Hopefully Sony can get its act together and Armored Core 3 can be the online Mecca for people aching to destroy real peoples mechs online.

Probably the games biggest problem is its controls. Its not how the mechs respond to controls, that part is just fine, but the way in which the controls are laid out on the controller. A big complaint about the first title was its lack of full analog support. This is best exemplified with the odd way in which your vertical aim must be changed - by using the shoulder buttons. Yep, the shoulder buttons. This makes shooting anything in the sky, which would be hard enough on its own, even harder. Practice will make perfect, well maybe not quite perfect, but you will get better - its just a shame that the controls werent done right in the first place.

Another Age looks quite similar to its predecessor at first glance, but further inspection reveals numerous improvements. The biggest of these is the solid framerate that is maintained regardless of the onslaught of missiles, bullets, and enemy mechs headed your way. The levels are large with good draw distances, but they are, for the most part, rather barren. The mechs themselves are large, powerful looking beasts - they all look top notch. If you often stared at the FMV clips of mech games past, and wondered why you couldnt play a game with mechs that looked that good, you prayers have been answered.

If youre like me, and you have a hard time equipping your mech against more skilled opponents, you can at least go into battle with the best looking mech. There are loads of options for changing the appearance of your mech, including multi-colored schemes and even the ability to design you own emblem. You may not be the most powerful mech in the fight, but youll look good while getting your tail whipped.

Anyone whos got a nice, powerful surround-sound system will be very pleased with what they hear from Another Age. Guns rapidly firing round after round, missiles flying by and then crashing into their target are all well done, and rattle the walls suitably.

Surprisingly, because most voice acting in videogames is miserable, AC2:AA features some very strong vocal talent. The large variety of voices in the mission briefings all sound good, and help you focus on your mission because they are interesting. The soundtracks middle of the road, with nothing really good or bad standing out.

Chances are, if youre reading this review, youve played a game in the Armored Core series be it on the Psx or the PS2. If you liked what you saw the first time around, youll be thrilled with this game. If you the previous games werent your cup of tea, theres likely not enough different here to change your mind.
