Have you ever wondered what has become of the great classic games we used to play on our past 8-bit systems? One title that comes to mind is the Capcom adventure Ghosts and Goblins. Well there is the theme of resurrections going on within Capcom Entertainment. They have brought us back to the classic adventure with 128-bit technology to go along with it, and what does that give us? One word, Maximo!! Thats right; Capcom has revamped the old classic into new form, and let me tell you its worth seeing. Fans of this series may be delighted to witness the come back and new game fans will love the new age Maximo.
To have this title grace our PS2 systems is an honour, but does this game live up to all the come back hype? Lets see. First the graphics in this game are really hot. Fans of the old game will be impressed with the improvements that have been made to give this series a new look and feel. Gamers who enjoyed the adventure Jack and Daxter (I know I did!!) will be glad to see what Capcom has turned this ledged into. The graphics in this game show an improvement with the PS2 games. I can see that the developers are really starting to push the power of the system. There are many things going on screen at once. From enemies attacking, to the ground shaking with no slowdown. It is an action platformer that looks great. The character design I must say is fabulous as well. They have taken great care in this department and Maximo himself looks badass. Even in boxer shorts with sword in hand, I dont think you would mess with him in a dark alley. The enemies as well look awesome, as they have put a lot of detail in this department. The enemies have a very dark feel to them, even though they are cartoonie. The backgrounds in this game have a lot of depth. When in game or in first person view mode the backgrounds do not look pasted on, there is evidence of depth perception here. The lighting effects are hella cool as well. When Maximo reaches a save point, the rays of light to mark it look great, even when he is resurrected there are cool effects that will have gamers eyes glued. In a nutshell, the graphics are too sweet.
Capcom has also brought a lot to the table in terms of the game play. Now I know Ghosts and Goblins is a classic, but just running, slashing, and jumping would not suffice in todays action market. Maximo has been provided with quite a few interesting moves to his arsenal for exciting game play. First you start off with two different striking actions, but as you progress in the game you acquire different skills that can be used to increase your level of attacks. Maximos shield can also be used to defend or attack as well. His shield has a damage meter that once blows are defended, you shield meter will decrease, but you can also throw your shield at enemies to inflict damage. This I found to be real cool. The controls are user friendly, as the button combinations that are used to perform more complex attacks or jumps are easy to learn. As well the time in which a move is done on the controller and the action on screen are in sync.
What would a great classic reborn be without great music and sound effects? This game does deliver the goods. The music in game is awesome. The music for each level sets the theme of an eerie mood to the game, especially in the first few levels. As your character performs attacks you can hear the war cries that follow. Or when the ground is breaking up around you because of your archenemy Achilles you can feel and hear the evil intensity.
Question? Is this game worth the purchase? Id say ohhhhh yeeeaaaahhhh!!!! Fans of the PS2 will be happy with the purchase because of the complete package that this game offers. It is great to see an old concept brought back and revamped to another classic standard! Its kinda like seeing an old girlfriend that looks even hotter than when you were first dating her, and the bonus is shes back for ya!! Only question to Capcom is, " can we expect another follow up?" I hope so, although time will tell, but until then gamers live life to the Maximo!!
