Mister Mosquito
PS2 Staff Review by Michael Brady

Games of today have pretty much the same formula, a super solider taking on a whole army, a lone female (or male) warrior battling against monsters and demons, or a team of people taking down a villainous entity, etc etc etc. So gamers, we can pretty much expect what we are going to be in these adventurous games, the only difference between them all is what are our weapons of choice may be. And even that is becoming monotonous. What are these gaming developers doing to keep us interested? Well, just direct your questions to the developers at Fresh Games. They have thought of the most exciting hero for us to become, and I must say this hero has purpose! Fresh Games has just dropped their innovative title Mister Mosquito. Thats right people, you are now a mosquito fighting to stay alive by sucking the blood off family members. You see you have some how been trapped in their house, and you must survive the winter by feeding off their vital fluids. Even though you may anger the family members by feeding off them, and personally I dont see why, your mission is clear. What is interesting about this title is that you actually see the game from the perspective of the mosquito. So after the completion of this title you may some sympathy for our annoying friends during summer time or after. Just think, you may find yourself saying, "These mosquitoes arent so bad after all, go ahead suck till your hearts content!"

Now the controls of this game are not too hard to master. The developers of this title have made it very easy for us to learn how to maneuver the mosquito and how to suck the blood out of our unwilling hosts. You will notice that Fresh Games has not only made a very innovative title, but they have also made the controls something fresh to us hardcore gamers. Although the controls are simple ( x, square, triangle, circle have the same function) they are used to have the mosquito attack areas of the skin on your hosts. But once you land on the preferred hosts, you must use the R3 stick to suck blood. The R3 analog stick must be rotated to suck the blood. It is very interesting because you have to control the frequency of how fast or slow the blood is drawn out. If you go too fast your host will become aware of your presence and then SPLAT!! If your too slow, then you may still take to long and then again SPLAT. I found it to be very neat, this concept is unique and makes the player feel like they are really controlling the life of a mosquito. So even if you are not highly interested in this type of game, the game play alone can have you hooked.

The graphics in this title are not what you would expect in a new game to come out for the 2002 season. We must remember that this title was in Japan for the PS2 for quite some time before it was brought across to the North American market. So the graphics are somewhat like the first or second-generation games. The graphics are what I call very cute, especially the mosquito. What I found interesting was the battle mode effects. When a host family member locks into your presence you go one on one with a human. Whenever they take a swing at you it is like watching a scene out of the Matrix, well kinda, but you will know what I mean when you see it. The character animations of the family members are great, they have the facial expressions that match their emotions. As you play as the mosquito you actually get to be the fly on the wall and are able to watch the social relationships between family members deteriorate. I found this to be an interesting concept in the game, as you go further into the game the family becomes more irritated of your presence and you get to hear about it. But one question I must ask the developers is, "Whats the deal with stinging the daughter in the crotch to relax her" Sound like there are some people over at Fresh Games that need to get out a little more often, instead of sitting down developing these games for us. Hey guys here is something that you can try, shift work! Dont spend so many hours developing for us, but then again thats why we love you guys!!

Overall this game is worth playing, honestly. If you are not a fan of this genre then you may not want to purchase this title. But it is worth checking out, so you can rent it, or if you have a girlfriend ( I hope some of the guys at Fresh Games do ) this will be the perfect title to have her seing why you purchased your PS2. Little gamers who are coming up into the market will like this title because it appeals to the younger market. So if you want a title to give a younger family member then this will make some young PS2 fans birthday very special, or a great stocking stuffer for Christmas.
