It was only a matter of time before Midway decided to come up with a hyper-realistic baseball title. After the great success of the Blitz series both on the football field and in the hockey arena, Midway then decided to hit the soccer pitch. Red Card 2003 this past summer was something different although it did not really deliver the over-the-top experience. I mean you can only tackle players so much before it becomes mundane. Perhaps you would think an aggressive baseball game would not offer much. To my surprise MLB Slugfest 20-03 was this past summer's sleeper hit. Not only did it showcase baseball in a different and hilarious light but it also managed to become only second best to High Heat on any console.
Midway needs a huge pat on its back because Slegfest has turned out to be the best looking baseball game on the market this year. The stadiums are brilliantly recreated thanks to the highly detailed environments. Unlike the competition, Slugfest showcases all of the nooks and crannies throughout each stadium. Players just don't run off into some void like robots. Instead they head to their respective bench. The player models, while a little on the beefy side, resemble their real-life counterparts. The animations both in the field and at bat are very fluid and smooth. The incredible plays are also animated with grace. There are some violent moments on the base paths where you can beat each other but it does not have a major impact on the outcome. It does however look hilarious and adds that something different we have needed in a baseball game for years. Perhaps the most impressive presentation feature has to be the insanely hilarious voice work. When I first popped in the game I thought I would have to endure some looping fools. Instead I was treated to a very deep library of play-by-play commentary complete with very funny quips. Midway in some ways has set the standard for commentary with Slugfest.
Slugfest in best described as a fun take on arcade baseball. Anyone could pick this up utilize the fairly simple controls. Pitching and hitting require good timing and careful use of the Midway signature "turbo" button to gain certain advantages. The pitching and interface is great for an arcade type baseball game. The key is to vary pitches and location in combination with the press of the turbo now and then. Feel like beaning someone? Go ahead and do it style! The aforementioned Turbo button is both useful as a pitcher and batter. As in past Midway games, a turbo meter determines how much turbo remains for each player. On offense it will power up your swing and runners. On defense, it allows for speedy throws from fielders, funky pitches from the pitcher and quick footwork for the outfielders.
My only gripe with Slugfest is its staying power. This game was made for multiplayer action. The single player mode is fun for a while but not deep enough to keep hardcore players busy. Regardless, Slugfest 20-03 has a wide appeal. If you are looking for some easy fun, do not pass by Slugfest. It will keep you playing through the upcoming baseball playoffs.
