Here’s slice of IGN’s article:

Mattel Interactive announced today that they are in the works with Harmony Gold to publish games based on the anime series Robotech. Unfortunately, no specifics have been decided upon, including system of choice -- Mattel was even cautious to say what systems would be likely for the new Robotech games, even though they would be excited with the commercial and technical possibilities of the PlayStation2.

Bikkuri USB Mouse
Sony's own three-button mouse is USB compatible and has a scroll wheel. There are few games supporting it at the moment (although Armored Core 2 is reputed to support it in menu screens) but it will be indispensable when first-person shooters begin appearing in the US. And naturally it won't be called "Bikkuri" here. Oh, and expect other third-party PS2 mice.

Deconstructing PlayStation 2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:12 AM, EDT
Core kicked up a huge interview with some PS2 developers.
Here’s a bit:

Core: If you could request that SCEI alter one aspect of the PlayStation 2, either a component, an aspect of the retail unit itself, or something to do with the development kits/process, what would it be? What do you feel, from a developer standpoint, is PlayStation 2’s greatest asset?

Criterion: Next time, could they do a VAIO makeover of the development TOOL, it would be awesome in purple! The greatest asset is flexibility -- people will be finding new ways to push this hardware for years to come.

Developer X: The PlayStation 2 has several great assets; a separate bus and processor for IO and sound operations, and the on-the-fly geometry modification that I mentioned earlier. Its floating point power, if fully utilized is pretty awe-inspiring too. I do wish it had a remote control thrown in however.

More on Summoner’s Anti-Aliasing - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:14 PM, EDT
Nathan Camarillo from Volition (the developer of Summoner) posted some more info on Summoner’s Anit Aliasing in the ‘comments’ to the post “No more jaggies in the games?” I posted earlier today.
The post it too large to fit here so I just paste a bit of it:

The way we're using FSAA, the process is done in hardware after the frame is rendered while it is being sent to the television. So when we create a screenshot, it isn't really dumping from the actual TV screen, it's doing it from the frame before the FSAA takes place. There's no real way to show it without creating a screenshot to "demonstrate" the effect. Taking a photo or digital picture of a TV screen wouldn't be a true representation either.

Tekken Tag Tournament review - Comments (9)
Posted by @ 8:54 AM, EDT
We kicked up a review of Namco’s PS2 fighter, Tekken Tag Tournament.
A slice:

Why beat the game with all the characters you say? Anyone that knows Namco knows that when you buy one of their fighting games you are buying much more than just an arcade conversion. TTT is no different, many options await discovery for those with enough skill and patience. Arcade mode is the basic format, and the one where you will unlock the extra characters, such as True Ogre, Panda, Alex, Kazuya, Devil, Wang and many others. Versus is where you will layeth the smack down on your friends. Survival will test your defense as well as your offense as you try to see how many teams you can defeat with one bar of energy. Theater mode will allow you to watch the character endings.

No more jaggies in the games? - Comments (9)

The boys and girls over at Daily Radar smacked up an interview with Volition concerning their RPG Summoner’s anti-aliasing.
Here’s a bit

DR: Ah, so you did get new information from Sony?

Volition: Yep.

DR: We've heard a lot about different types of anti-aliasing. Is it edge-based anti-aliasing or full scene?

Volition: It's full scene. There are two types of anti-aliasing on the PS2. There's edge AA that everyone's been talking about, and then there's a full scene type of anti-aliasing, but the issue with that is that it hasn't been labeled as full scene anti-aliasing. If you look at the feature in the hardware doc, you'll see it, but it might not occur to you that it's full scene anti-aliasing.

DR: It was referred to as something else?

Volition: It was listed as something different and not fully explained. It's not in any of the manuals. A tech support guy at Sony wrote up a doc that you can only get from the Sony dev site, which explains a number of different AA schemes. We've implemented one of his ideas.

DR: So, with Summoner full scene anti-aliased, what kind of drop are you seeing in framerate or performance?

Volition: Zero.

IGN posted two reviews, of Hresvelgr and Rock'n MegaStage.
A bit of the Hresvelgr review:

All in all, Hresvelgr is one import title that we best advise you to stay away from. For the sake of us North American gamers, lets hope that when Crave Entertainment brings this title out in the U.S. under the new name of Fusion GT that the company is able to fix this game's many problems. If not, they shouldn't even bother touching this steaming pile of cow dung.

A bit of the Rock'n MegaStage review:
So if the game is not much to look at, would we like to listen to it? Well, musical taste is always a matter of a hell of a lot of debate, but I guess I'll throw myself at the wall of rusty fish hooks and just say it - this music bites. There's a couple of decent rock tracks, but the vast majority of the music will cause severe pain to anyone who doesn't have very broad tastes as far as J-pop is concerned.

AiCube develops Virtual Reality equipment - Comments (10)
Posted by @ 12:33 PM, EDT
From the Nikkei Industrial Daily Tuesday edition:

TOKYO -- Virtual reality technology firm AiCube Co. and InterSense Inc., a U.S. start-up involved in developing tracking solutions, have jointly developed equipment that connects to home-use game consoles to create a virtual reality experience with a 360-degree view.

The equipment can be connected to next-generation consoles such as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2.
The system includes a head-mounted display featuring sensors that monitor the movements of the wearer.

The equipment is capable of high-speed generation of computer graphics, allowing for the continuous adjustment of images in accordance with the user's movements. The system will sell for 120,000 yen.

AiCube and InterSense succeeded in developing low-cost virtual reality equipment by modifying military-use sensors for civilian use.

Sales will begin July 1. The units will be sold to makers of game software on an OEM basis. The first-year sales goal is 1,000 sets, increasing to 100,000 sets after three years.

Hresvelgr impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:31 PM, EDT
Core smacked up some impressions on the recently released PS2 racer, Hresvelgr
Here’s a bit:

The game draws many comparisons to Psygnosis' WipeOut series, and rightfully so: You race one of seven sleek crafts, utilizing several types of weaponry to disable opponents along the way. Hresvelgr starts to distance itself from WipeOut, however, in the visual department -- the game runs at a mostly smooth 60fps and features no anti-aliasing problems that has plagued earlier PS2 titles. Hresvelgr does an excellent job of conveying a sense of blazing speed, particularly in later levels that involve different types of tunnels.
Full article

IGN also managed to kick up some impression on this game.
A slice:
For one, Hresvelgr is plagued by some powerfully troubling control issues, particularly the considerable difficulty we encountered in staying on the track. Though in theory your craft is capable of full flight, you must stay on the glowing ribbon of the track or be deprived of power (you fall to earth, and are magically restarted). This is extremely difficult at times, because the control is so terribly floaty and unresponsive that the more difficult courses make it almost impossible to stay on track (although some courses guide you so unerringly with their walls that winning is almost inevitable).

The Lost interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:22 PM, EDT
IGN posted an interview with Irrational Games about their PS2 title, The Lost.
Here’s a bit:

DS: You said this is a survival-horror type of game, is the camera going to follow the character, or is it going to be focused on individual scenes?

KL: We're using control you might recall if you've played Oni on PS2, or MDK2. The player has full control over the camera. If you've played our games, you know that they have very object-rich environments, very real-feeling environments, and we thought that was critical compared to a computer-controlled camera because we wanted the player to be able to explore ever nook and cranny, and really get a sense of the scope of the world we're providing for them. Therefore, we wanted the player to have complete control over that, and not face the frustration of a computer-controlled camera.

Wipeout Fusion Preview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 11:05 AM, EDT
We slapped up a preview of the debut Wipeout game for PS2....

Wipeout Fusion has a bit of a back story to it. The atmosphere is a more realistic one that takes place in the future in the year 2150. The invention of anti-gravity devices has brought on a new age of extreme racing, the F9000 league. The game isn’t completely off the wall. The laws of physics apply to this futuristic world and things aren’t too far fetched so players should feel a heightened sense of realism when they play.

The cars in the game will look pretty much exactly how they are supposed to. There is twelve separate damage points on the cars so you’ll actually be able to see your car crumple up into a heap of junk as you mix it up with the other drivers. Expect to see a lot of use of particle effects such as sparks, skid marks, flying parts and smoke. The damage should look very realistic as it is made polygonally and texturally.

E3 is every memorable event for Mr. Kojima. This is because the previous MGS was first announced at E3 97 in Atlanta and was very well received. For Mr. Kojima and for the MGS series, "announcing the production of MGS2 as E3 as the opener" was very significant.

SSX interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 9:36 AM, EDT
IGN kicked up an interview with EA about their snowboard game, SSX.
A slice:

IGNPS2: How have you made the soundtrack interactive with the gameplay?

SR: The music in the game adjusts to what gamers are doing as they race down the hill and the player's ability will determine how the music varies. For example, if you are muddling down the hill, flipping head-over-heels every time you get air, the music is going to reflect this and will be slow and sluggish. On the flipside, the more air and the bigger and badder tricks you do, the music will correspond and be more upbeat and snappy. This feature allows a new musical experience every time and makes you feel like you're on the turntables mixing the tracks yourself.

Dynasty Warriors 2 interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:26 PM, EDT
Daily Radar posted an interview with Koei about their PS2 game, Dynasty Warriors 2.
Here’s a bit:

DR: How does riding a horse fit into the game -- is it optional, or will some scenarios require a horse to be used to succeed?

TT: The horse is basically a fast means of transportation. During the early stages, they might not seem very important. However, from the middle stages, more movement is required, and basically, if you don't have a horse, you can't win.
Other than that, if you are strong enough, you are able to knock your opponents away by riding into them with your horse. However, if you aren't strong enough, they will stop your horse. It all depends on the difference in ability of you and your opponents. The stronger you get, the more people you can knock down. It can be really fun to go plowing all by yourself through a field of enemies, watching them go flying like bowling pins.

IGN posted some impressions of Konami’s sniper game, Silent Scope.
Here’s a bit:

Yes, the arcade version was a hell of a kick (albeit in a very Freudian sort of way), but the home version seems to handle its limitations pretty well. It's not excessively difficult, and the feeling of being both far removed from the action, yet constantly in danger, comes through. There are some very innovative boss encounters, but taking on even the basic enemies is quite interesting.

Another thing that has remained largely unchanged is the options that this game offers. Exhibition, World Cup, League Play, all staples of the series are here. The new option, which is not really that big of a deal, is a U-23 match. For those of you not too familiar with soccer, U-23 is just players that are 23 years or younger. GS: With this enormous virtual mountain, what types of terrain features, good and bad for snowboarding, are you incorporating into the game?

CH: The terrain is so diverse. You can go down a cruiser run, which just has a bunch of "airs," like an aerial park; or you can go down the steeps, which is just like the back of a mountain, which you get going at incredibly fast speeds, and you can have some nasty wipeouts. So, it's the most realistic riding simulation as far as being on a mountain that you could possibly get, aside from the competition of the authentic X-Games events.

IGN posted an interview with Free Radical Design about their upcoming FPS game, Timesplitters.
A slice:
IGNPS2: OK, what other aspects from Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are you implementing in Timesplitters? How will it be different from those games?

Karl: In terms of the design of backgrounds I would hope most players will see an evolution from the backgrounds in games we have previously worked on. We are still very keen to really try and immerse players in believable and interesting settings. However, we are also keen to stretch people's imagination a little and push them in to a few more fantasy locations, without resorting to any of the old first-person shooter cliches. While we take gaming very seriously, we are trying to inject a little light-heartedness in to the genre.

Gamespot posted an interview with Volition about their PC/PS2 RPG, Summoner.
Some of it:
GS: How are you going about implementing Asian culture and mythology - or philosophy, rather - into the gameplay?

AS: Summoner takes place on two different continents: Medeva and Orenia. The Orenian continent is steeped in Asian culture. The architecture is very Oriental in design, and many of the creatures and characters that you meet there are distinctly Asian in style. The mix of the two styles (Oriental and European) gives the game a very new and interesting look.

Microsoft buys Bungie - Comments (8)

Bungie, the developer of the hyped up games Halo and Oni, has been acquired by Microsoft.

Well, the two games, Halo and Oni were supposed to be released for the PS2...
And according to Take-Two’s press release Oni will still be released for the PS2.
Daily Radar interviewed Bungie about this deal...
One interesting question:

DR: Were you in development for any of your games on PS2 that are now cancelled for that platform?

JJ: No, we have been working on ONI for PS2 with Take 2 and that is still going strong. There was never any substance to the rumors that we were working on a PS2 version of Halo.
According to this info, Oni will be released for the PS2, but Halo won’t.

SSX music - Comments (0)

FGN dug up some info on the music in the snowboard title SSX.
A bit of the article:

"Smith enlisted Mix Master Mike, as well as Rahzel (solo artist and member of The Roots) to come up to Vancouver and collaborate. No one was quite sure what would come out of it. In the end, SSX now has music that mixes and scratches (like an in-game DJ) on the fly, as you play. The title track to the game was born from the collaboration of the two, along with our own John Morgan.

TWINE interview - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 5:07 PM, EDT
Eurogamer posted an interview with Eric von Rothkirch, a level designer working on the PC/PS2 bond game, The World Is Not Enough.
A slice:

"The movie lends itself to a lot of great gameplay moments, and our massive environments are based on all of the coolest scenes from the movie. We're working very closely with MGM and Danjaq to make sure that the game lives up to the action and excitement of the movies, as well as the overall Bond franchise."

It sounds like a dream job. "Overall, it's been a great project to work on", Eric admits, but it's not without its problems. "The challenges of a licensed game, or any game for that matter, surround certain parameters and time constraints that we all must abide by. In the case of TWINE, we have to deliver an exciting, fantastic game that stays true to the Bond world."

Naughty Dog interview - Comments (1)

IGN conducted an interview with Naughty Dog. They speak about Naughty’s PS2 plans and their impressions of the PS2.
I couldn’t find the article over at the IGN site, but the interview was posted in our forum.
A slice:

Question: What does NDI have in store for PS2?

Jason Rubin: Naughty Dog is working on a Top Secret PS2 Title for release sometime far in the future. Our goal is to be the first big second generation title... similar to the way we release Crash. It will be a new thing this time, with no crash... and we are very excited about it.

Question: Can you elaborate more on the PS2 project that you're working on? What kind of a game is it?

Jason Rubin: We have a very strict policy at Naughty Dog not to talk about products before their time. We don't like the idea of going for big press without something solid to back it up. So, though I hate to do it, I can't really elaborate on the next project. Suffice it to say that it is an action game, and it is not based on the Crash Universe.

THQ interview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 12:09 PM, EDT
Core smacked up an interview with THQ about the FPS game Red Faction.
A bit of the rapping:

CM: How will the player’s destructive urges be kept in check, or will such urges be held back at all? What’s to stop a player from taking a bazooka and carving a new path from start to finish around all puzzles and adversaries?

PH: From a technical standpoint, nothing. From a gameplay standpoint, tunneling from start to finish wouldn’t be very fun. We can explicitly specify regions or areas of the level where you cannot geomod. The level designers take this into account while building their levels. Additionally, we control the amount of ammunition the player will have at any given point in the game.

We can also restrict geometry modification using other gameplay constraints. For example, we could prevent the player from blasting a tunnel by placing explosives in the path. Or perhaps there is a river of lava that would kill the player if penetrated.

The Ultimate PS2 Setup - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 12:08 PM, EDT
Daily Radar wrote an article giving their views of the ultimate PS2 setup (TV, Sound system etc).
Some of it:

Now that a VGA cable is confirmed and on the way, you might want to consider using a VGA monitor instead of a TV. The advantage is better resolution (than conventional TV sets) and far finer dot pitch. With some adjustment, it's very likely that colors will be brighter and crisper too. If you're going to use a monitor rather than a TV, it's likely that it'll be desk bound, so we're keeping it small here (a Gateway Destination 31-inch monitor would be cool but a real space-hog).

Some of it:

A handful of Bond's allies will come into play during the course of the missions, including Dr. Christmas Jones, and possibly the late Q, M, the John Cleese character, R, and a few others. They will help you through the intelligently designed missions and complex levels. EA's producers said that this game differs from other Bond games, and other FPS, in that gamers can complete a mission in more than one way. Various forms of clever thinking and spontaneity will reward you, just like in real Bond movies. Intelligently designed interactive backgrounds will play a key part in how players complete their missions.

The PS2 attracts adult buyers, few teenagers - Comments (9)
Posted by @ 7:19 AM, EDT
A survey has been conducted by Sony, and Asiabiztech reports about it:

June 15, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2 game machine is popular among people in their 30's and 40's, rather than teenagers, a company survey said.

According to the survey, 71 percent of PS2 purchasers had bought the earlier PlayStation (PS) game console, while the remaining 29 percent were new users.

SCE investigated the difference in user groups of the PS and the PS2 as classified by generation. Those under the age of 20 had a dominant share of more than 45 percent of the PS users, although they accounted for no more than 16 percent of the PS2 users.

On the other hand, users who are 30 years old and older accounted for only 8.8 percent of the PS users and exceeded 42 percent of the PS2 users.

Dynasty Warriors 2 Interview - Comments (0)

IGN posted an interview with Koei about their upcoming samurai-warrior game Dynasty Warriors 2.
Here’s a bit:

IGNPS2: What special items and abilities will the player be able to gain during the game? Another way for characters to get stronger is by gaining experience -- how does this work, and what advantages will it give to the player?

Takazumi: The officers (the ones with points) will leave behind items when they are defeated. These items only appear if the player himself defeats the officer. These items only stay for a short time, so it is important to grab them before they disappear. It is probably better to pick them up before the player picks a fight with someone else.
There are a number of different items. Some have temporary effects. They restore health or raise energy. Others affect permanent statistics. They raise player attributes, offensive or defensive ability, stamina, and so on.

More interviews from IGN, this time they interview the Swedish developer Massive Entertainment about their upcoming PS2 game, Ground Control.
A slice:

IGNPS2: When did you decide to put the game onto the PS2 platform? Are two different teams working on the PlayStation 2 and PC versions?

Martin: The final decision to make a PS2 version was made earlier this year. The way Ground Control is played, immediately, made us think about putting it on a console. With PS2 there is finally a console that has the raw power to drive a game like this.
We're contributing to the development of this project, although most is being done by an internal Sierra team.

IGNPS2: What new gameplay features will be included in the PlayStation 2 version compared to the PC version?

Martin: The goal is to take the fast-paced gameplay of Ground Control and make the appropriate changes to give it a natural feel when playing it on the PlayStation 2. At this point, it's too early to let you in on how we're changing the gameplay as we haven't finalized all elements of Ground Control on PlayStation 2.

Enter a new era of wrestling with Electronic Arts' unique idea for WCW 2000. The first thing you will notice is the absence of a ring! No, they didn't forget it. EA Canada is taking a new approach for making a wrestling game by doing away with the confines of the squared circle altogether. Instead, the battles will take place everywhere else but the ring such as the boiler room, locker room, out on the street or wherever else is a good place to kick some ass.

Kojima vs. Okamoto - Konami vs. Capcom Interview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 10:11 AM, EDT
Gamers.com posted a fat interview with Mr. Kojima and Mr. Okamoto.
Here’s a bit of the 3-part interview:

Interviewer: To understand what Mr. Okamoto is talking about concerning the next Biohazard, can you explain how you try to best utilize the high graphic capabilities of PS2. There seems to be a lot of trial and error going on as various creators try to figure out how to show the best graphics.

Kojima: This is kind of a severe topic. Everyone wants to do this. Everyone who creates a PS2 title looks at it and says, “Hmm…is this it? We need to do better graphics then this.” People want to pump out the graphics but are glancing over the other companies’ shoulders to see how they do it.

Okamoto: I look at chess, shogi and mahjong games out there and think, "You guys have it so easy!" I almost want to put one out ’cause it’s so easy. That’s it, the next game by me is a DVD mahjong game. I’ll even include porno.

Kojima: Porno mahjong! [laughs]

Okamoto: Yeah, Reiko Hayama will strip her clothes off.

All Star Pro Wrestling review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 10:08 AM, EDT
IGN smacked up a review of Square’s wrestler.
Here’s a bit:

Aside from nasty controls, ASPW happens to be one of the most lethargic wrestling games ever created. While the player animation ranges from amazingly fluid to laughably robotic, transitions between positions (down, crouching, and standing) can take up to three seconds. There's no collision detection on your wrestler as he sloooo-wly lumbers to his feet – and any attacks that are thrown by your opponent will go right through your body in a supernatural fashion. And, for the love of god, make sure you don't get a case of the "dizzies" – I've spent lengthy intervals watching the computer AI beat the goo out of me, with no chance of escaping. All in all, the entire gameplay experience is about as fluid as an underwater soccer match.

DR: How big do you think the single-player will be?

NC: Expect eight massive levels and a nonlinear plot. There's a main plot with several subplots, so it could turn out to be really long. The good thing about the game is that you can wander around for four hours without having any load times. Players can wander around the level, and then when they get to load stage, they'll be able to see the other level in front of them as it loads.

Behind the PS2 - Comments (7)
Posted by @ 10:05 AM, EDT
Core had a small chat with a PlayStation2 programmer about... the PS2.
Here’s a slice:

Question: We've heard countless stories of disgruntled PlayStation2 developers in recent weeks. Particularly due to the limitations of the hardware, specifically 4MB of VRAM. Can you shed some light on the situation?

Answer: To begin, the PlayStation2 has 32MB of main memory, compared to the Dreamcast which only has 16. So basically, a PlayStation2 programmer can use 3-4MB of main memory as his VRAM cache. The smaller VRAM makes things trickier, but the speed of the bus feeding the VRAM from the main memory more than makes up for it. In other words, you can swap things in and out of the VRAM when needed, and it can be done extremely quick. The Dreamcast however, is extremely slow at doing that.

Gamefan posted some impressions and new screens of Square’s wrestling game.
Some of it:

Yes, the game runs in the PS2's "low resolution" 640x240 mode, so the interlacing is pretty evident (just as it was in Ridge Racer V), but when you see how silky-smooth these characters move and animate, you won't mind it. Watching their facial expressions change, muscles flex and ripple when they pull off suplexes or hit the mat is a sight to behold. I should also mention that there are six hidden characters to unlock in this game, including two famous Japanese female wrestlers...but for you create-a-wrestler fans, there is no option to spawn your own grappler here.

Halo article - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:18 PM, EDT
PC Gamer UK smacked up an article about Bungie’s PS2/PC fps game, Halo.
A slice:

What must be stressed is how strongly the separation is; the interaction between squadmates - which is the very core of multi-player - is drastically cut back in the single campaign. Here you play a heavily armoured, iconically cool advanced reconnaissance soldier at the edge of the doomed human expedition. While your fellow marines make appearances throughout, the interaction you share is closer to Half-Life than Rogue Spear; an individual avatar interacting with others rather than an omniscient view. This should allow Bungie to express their aim of telling a sweeping narrative through letting you associate more strongly with your character.

Here’s a bit:

The 3D models used for the wrestlers, as you can see from the screenshots, are incredibly detailed. You can see the expression change on the wrestler's faces as they are struck by opponents. Moreover, you'll occasionally see the wrestler's muscles jiggle when they're slammed onto the mat.

The controls for the game left us a little puzzled since you must use one analog stick to move around the ring and the other to execute moves and strikes. We're still trying to figure out exactly how the controls work, but one of the coolest moves we found right away is that the game lets you drag your opponent by his hair.

We saw the first marketing footage of the title at Midway's offices yesterday, and if the FMV's anything to go by, you'd better watch this one closely. Players take on the role of a super-spy in what looks like a McLaren or Delorian sports car. The tape showed the white roadster storming through wooded suburban streets being chased by two black cars in the 1930s style. At one point, the player's car drops an oil slick from the back bumper while power-sliding round a tight bend, leaving the following vehicles in a crumpled mess at the side of the road.

FG: EA has a total of 20 titles in development for Playstation 2. We'll have six ready for the launch in October, eight to ten by the end of the year and 12 by March of 01. Madden Football looks great and I predict it will be the number one title in North America; SSX arcade-style snowboard racing will be the hottest new entry. Sony makes PS2 an open format - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 2:39 PM, EDT
Sony will start to sell EE (CPU of PS2) and GS (GPU of PS2) parts.
Heres a bit of EETimes article:

TOKYO — In a bid to dominate the videogame business and establish a beachhead in embedded systems, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will sell on the merchant market the high-performance microprocessors and graphics chips used to drive its Playstation 2 game console, beginning next year. The company will also open up the platform's format, a move analysts say could dramatically swell the number of Playstation users.

"The gaming market is huge," said Nobuyuki Idei, president and chief executive officer of parent Sony Corp. "There are no other consumer electronics products that sell 2 million units in 80 days," as Playstation 2 did. But if the console "remained just a [Sony] platform, there would be limits to its market penetration. By opening the format, a new horizon will emerge."

By Kutaragi's accounting, licensing the Playstation format could boost the installed base for the new version of the console far beyond the 73 million users of the original Playstation. Moreover, expanding the Playstation base could help Sony progress toward its corporate goal of morphing from a hardware to a communications company. If the growing pool of Playstation 2 systems were all connected, it would create an instant network platform, Idei said.

ArsTechnica wrote up a story about this move, giving their thoughts on it.
A slice:
When I originally reported on the Creative Workstation, I cautioned that it would probably cost enough to give everyone but developers and rendering houses a nose bleed. Well, now that Sony is going to widely license the PS2's format, the magic of the open market can work to make scaled-down clone versions of the Workstation an affordable reality. I, for one, hope that the industry steps up to the challenge that the new platform offers, and that I get the chance to review a smokin' PS2-based workstation in the very near future. I also hope that, however it performs and whatever OS it runs, it'll come in a really cool case.

Core kicked up an interview with Konami about the mech title, Z.O.E.
Here’s a bit:

Question: What can we expect specifically in terms of gameplay?

Okamura-san: You'll run through fields and have conversations with many characters, there's a real storyline. Based on the initial pictures we've released, most players assume ZOE is just another mech fighter. It's not! It's more like Zelda than anything.

Kojima-san: Right, we describe the game as a simulation for players who enjoy robots and anime. We want players to experience climbing into the giant robot and using it to fight. In 'Metal Gear Solid' we wanted players to experience being a secret agent. They're similar to some degree.

Okamura-san: Compared to anime movies, I think this is the best way to convey the experience of climbing into a giant robot. That's the goal of my work, to express things better through the gaming medium.

IGN posted some new info on From Software’s mech-fighter.
Some of it:

As you work your way through the game, new parts become available. Exactly what new toys you get to play with depends on what forces you align yourself with, which is affected in turn by which missions you take. AC2 is structured more or less like the original Armored Core, placing you in the role of a mercenary for hire in a world governed by massive corporations. At certain points in the game, you're offered multiple missions centered around one focus - one company may try and hire you to attack a target, while another will offer you the job of defending it.

FGN scored some info from Martin Walfisz of Massive Entertainment about the PS2 version of Ground Control.
Here’s a slice:

"We think Ground Control provides a unique experience on the PC and it is that unique experience that we are hoping to capture and translate appropriately to PS2," Walfisz explained. "While we've seen turn-based strategy games or simplified real-time strategy games on the console, we believe that the blend of real-time action and squad control that Ground Control offers coupled with unmatched visuals will be unique on the PlayStation 2."

Behind the PS2 TOOL - Comments (7)
Posted by @ 5:18 AM, EDT
Core had a small chat with a PS2 developer and asked him about the PS2 development tool.
Here’s a bit:

Question: Very interesting, considering how outspoken some companies have been regarding the complexity of PlayStation2 development.

Answer: I think the main problem is that most developers had preconceived notions regarding PS2 development. However, as a programmer, the PlayStation2 forces you to change your way of thinking. Once you do that, you open yourself up to new techniques and things which haven't been done before. In that sense, I think the main people complaining are use to Direct-X. And anyone who actually likes Direct-X should be shot. [laughs..]

Seriously though, I've seen titles in development which are mind-blowingly gorgeous, and definitively next-generation. Once you see what development houses such as Naughty Dog have under wraps, everyone's qualms will be washed away. Also, just wait until the smaller development houses in England get a firm grasp on the machine.

Wipeout Fusion preview - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 4:07 PM, EDT
Gamsepot posted a fat preview of the upcoming PS2 Wipeout game, Wipeout Fusion.
Here’s a bit:

Another new feature is the freeform nature of the tracks, where you'll be given the opportunity to choose your own route through the tracks. From what we've seen so far, the tracks have a lot of splits where you can choose from several routes. Little is known about how, exactly, the freeform tracks will work. But we do know that there will be seven huge racing environments in Wipeout Fusion, each one sporting three separate courses. Each track will consist of more than 150,000 polygons, which allows for breathtaking detail. Another new steering option is to move your ship sideways, much like strafing, which is especially good for evading weapon attacks.

Summoner Chat - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:07 PM, EDT
IGN held a chat yesterday with Summoner's lead programmer.
Some of the Q&A’s:

Question: I'd like to know if this game will use anti-aliasing, and why the other games don't seem to have it. I've heard that it causes screen flickering and artifacts, is this true?
James Hague: The anti-aliasing issue came about because many of the first wave of games were either in low res or didn't use mipmapping properly...We've got both of those problems licked.

Question: Remember that high-res mode I told you about last night? Let's get a little info on that.
James Hague: At E3, we were running in 640x224 mode, which is kind of an odd resolution. Lots of aliasing problem, unfortunately. A few days after E3 we kicked the game into a full 640x448 mode, which makes all the jaggies melt away. And, amazingly enough, there's absolutely no speed hit for running in this higher resolution. None whatsoever.

Question: As a programmer, have you or the team had any problems with the PS2's relatively limited VRAM?
James Hague: 4MB of VRAM may look small compared to current PC cards, but the pipe to that card--the bus--is huge beyond belief. So we can upload textures like crazy--tens of megabytes per frame--and we're fine. You can't do that sort of thing with a standard PC bus.

IGN posted a preview of Core Design's action-adventure title, Project Eden.
Core is also working on another PS2 game, Herdy Gerdy.
A slice of the preview:

Core's team also emphasized the necessity of implementing smart enemies in Project Eden. Opponents won't just appear in clone like form, permitting you to pummel them in all of the stereotypical ways. Instead, enemies constantly morph into different types, confounding players each and every time they encounter a new lone henchman or a group of them.
