Koei interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:40 PM, EDT
Core kicked up an interview with Koei about their PS2 game Shin-Sangokumusou.
Here’s a bit:

Question: In regard to development, what problems have you encountered?

Suzuki-san: Considering the PlayStation2 is new hardware, we've struggled through trial and error by testing out new things. Since it's essentially an action game we're forced to make it 60fps, no more or less. So we're trying to make the animation as detailed as we can within the 60fps limit, without causing control problems. Its been very difficult. Right now we're motion capturing animation for the soldiers and the general. We want the characters motion to appear realistic, and increase the overall graphic quality, but it's a struggle.

PC Vs Console (and a new PS2 game) - Comments (6)
Posted by @ 4:19 PM, EDT
VE slapped up an interview with Jeff Gosztyla from Avalanche Software.
They discuss the difference between PC and console gaming.
Here’s a slice:

Currently I am working at Avalanche Software on an arcade-like motorcycle racing game. I am responsible for:
-The physics engine for motorcycle mechanics
-The collision system
-The overall game architecture
-The joystick input
-The 3D sound system
-Certain aspects of the artificial intelligence
The game will be released for the Playstation 2 in the Spring of 2001.

VE: What kind of competition do you see between the X-Box and PS2?

FOOD: There is going to be a very bloody battle. A lot will depend on the initial cost of the X-Box. Much like Sony deflated the Dreamcast launch, Microsoft can deflate the PS2 launch. But that won't be easy, because the PlayStation is supposedly the third most recognized brand name in the world. MS has to employ the strategy of hyping it up before it releases. The Japanese release of the PS2 sold around 700,000 units in first few days, and has now exceeded 1.4 million units. But MS has announced the biggest advertising budget of any console. Microsoft knows they only have one opportunity to establish themselves as the player in the console market, I anticipate very few mistakes on their part with the launch. Microsoft is already on most of the desktops in the world, X-Box is their way of getting on all the set-tops in the world.

So according to this guy Avalanche is working on a PS2 racer...

Here's some more info on the PS2 game from the interview:

He showed me an outlaw biker riding a Harley chopper through endless city streets and landscapes. Since it is a racing AND fighting game he showed me the rider's punches and kicks, which are delivered Ben-Hur style while the riding continues. He demonstrated a lot of different angles and views, and pointed out the textures and engine features.

PS2 Vs PC - Comments (26)
Posted by @ 12:57 PM, EDT
Arstechnica slapped up a fat article comparing the PS2 with the PC.
Some of it:

So which machine is more powerful? Well, if you're talking 3D gaming and you mean right now, I wouldn't hesitate to give the crown to the PS2. Looking ahead to the next two or three years, the future looks much less certain. It'll be quite a while before developers are able to figure out how to harness the full capabilities of the PS2, and while they're scratching their heads the PC will be getting more and more powerful. As we'll soon see with the NV15, the PC is still advancing quickly under the old "large buckets and slightly bigger pipes" paradigm. However, the PS2 represents the true next generation of media processing, and until the PC catches up with it in terms of bandwidth and overall data throughput (read "SIMD") it can't be worthily called a true dynamic media machine.

Sky Surfer import review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:53 PM, EDT
IGN kicked up a review of the airboard game Sky Surfer.
Here’s a bit:

In the end, there's not much to say about Sky Surfer, because there's not a whole lot of game there. In fact, that seems to be the prevalent theme throughout the game -- limitations. Game modes, characters, stages, things you can do in the air, interactive backgrounds, scenery during the trick mode.... they're all either lacking or missing. Even if there were some more characters, courses, or even an extra mode or two, it wouldn't help that much. I just don't think that the sport of sky surfing can be done justice by a videogame.

Gradius III & IV Review - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 4:18 PM, EDT
IGN kicked up a review of Konami's classic shooter compilation.
Here’s a slice:

Aside from these new additions, these are the same games you know from before. Gradius III displays "1985" in large letters on the title screen and it shows. Also, for some reason, there is a RAM/ROM check screen at the beginning, too. When you start Gradius III, there is the same old voice that says "Destroy them all!" The enemies, the attack patterns and the bosses are all the same. Obviously, it depends on how you feel about Gradius as to whether this is a good or bad thing. Gradius IV is basically the same game as GIII, but with slightly higher detailed models/graphics.

Stunt Driver - Comments (4)
Posted by @ 2:30 PM, EDT
IGN kicked up an interview with Climax about their Stunt Driver for the PS2.
Here’s a slice:

IGNPS2: Stunt Driver isn't a game we've heard a lot about -- How long has this been bubbling under at Climax?

Chris Eden: This has actually been under development for about a year. It's basically an arcade style racer, intended for next-gen consoles. What is really cool about it is the level of innovation we've included in the tracks and stuff onscreen. On the skin the track is essentially held as a series of curves to which polygons are added and then to further complicate it the closer an object is to the screen, the more polygons it's allowed to have, so there's tons of level of detail stuff on that as well. So the track with the curves close to you has got an incredible number of polygons. This gives us a huge amount of foreground detail as you'll see.

PS2 reviews - Comments (10)
Posted by @ 2:26 PM, EDT
The lads over at Gamespot UK have been busy, today they kicked up 4 review of PS2 games:

Golf Paradise (4/10)
For all the total golf heads, you can spend ages on each shot, changing angles of your feet, fiddling with club selection (the auto caddy seems to do just fine every time though) and altering every aspect of your shot. You can make all the alterations you want, but just hitting the O button on every shot seems to handle everything just fine.

Full review

Fantavision (7.8/10)
It does sound simple, but as the game progresses it gets harder and faster, and of course the explosions are bigger, better and more colourful. For the first ten minutes or so it is easy to think that the game is nothing special, but after half an hour Fantavision will have you hooked, and you will be dusting down your little black book so that you can find someone special to play it with.

Full review

Dead or Alive 2 (8.9/10)
DOA2 also wins hands down when it comes to the environments you fight in. I can remember when Tekken was being hyped and a lot was made out of the fact that every blade of grass could move individually. If you prefer to have some limited interaction with the levels and even multistage levels, then DOA2 is the place to come.

Full review

Kessen (3.4/10)
Even if you stood a hope in hell of understanding the storyline from the huge amounts of CGI sequences, the game itself is about as involving as a Mills & Boon book (pick it up, try a passage, wonder why you're bothering and throw it down quickly). Kessen looks like it could be running on, dare I say it, a normal PlayStation. There's nothing impressive about the look at all.

PS2 export control - Comments (21)
Posted by @ 2:52 PM, EDT
More on the PS2 export control, from the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition:

TOKYO --Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has been authorized to export its home-use PlayStation2 game console, company sources said. The console "may be exported to any region of the world, except Iran, Iraq, Libya and North Korea," a spokesperson for SCE said.
The company will sell the latest PlayStation in the U.S. and Europe as early as autumn.

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry issued the firm with four export permits, covering, among others, the console's image-processing technology and its encryption technology used to read data from external memory media. The device's state-of-the-art image-processing technology enables the user to move about movie-quality computer graphics on screen, the company claims.

Export of the machine has been regulated under foreign trade and exchange laws, which restrict the sale overseas of goods that can be adapted for military use. The console's technology and parts are sufficiently sophisticated to be legally classifiable as adaptable for use in missile guidance systems or decoding equipment.

U.S. version of PS2 to have modem & hard drive? - Comments (12)

The additions will be announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo games show in Los Angeles, taking place May 11, 12 and 13.

"The PlayStation2 has tremendous capabilities, which are not all being used," said Alex Muromcew, a portfolio manager at Loomis Sayles, which manages $70 billion. Adding a modem and hard drive "upgrades it to the next level, though we'll need to see what it does to the price of the machine."

"Insomniak" sent in a review of Ridge Racer V.
Some of it:

If you put your neck on the line and pay up for the PS2 then driving and fighting are your only real options at the moment! Ridge Racer 5 came with my system when i bought it, and i was therefore eager to fire it up and see what all the hoo-ha is about! Having been an avid PC racer for years now (following the Need For Speed series from one to five), i've seen the PC graphics and speed continue to challenge and beat the consoles at their own game. Now the PS2 needs to set higher targets to avoid becoming obsolete before it even becomes available to the general public!

Chipworks Deconstructs Sony Playstation2 - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 2:12 PM, EDT
Chipworks, a technical services company that analyzes the circuitry and physical composition of semiconductors chips and electronics systems for applications in intellectual property licensing, patenting, competitive study, quality reviews, and reliability assurance ripped apart the PS2.
Here's a slice of the pressrelease:

OTTAWA--April 12, 2000--Chipworks Inc. today announced significant technological inclusions found in the Sony PlayStation2. These findings are available in a newly released product tear down report.

"The Sony PlayStation2 has a MIPS-based superscalar processor with two additional vector floating-point units running at the rapid speed of 300MHz (Emotion Engine(tm)) using dual channel direct RDRAM as the main memory, and a Graphics Synthesizer(tm) with embedded DRAM as a video buffer. A DVD-ROM was added so that the more sophisticated, complex and realistic game rendering would be achieved," said Julia Elvidge, Director, Marketing & Sales for Chipworks. Sony has pulled off real sound reproduction through the inclusion of 48 independent voice channels and the end result is a powerful and unrivaled new gaming machine," stated Ms. Elvidge.

Furthermore, in Chipworks' investigation of the Sony PlayStation2, "the Emotion Engine(tm) and Graphics Synthesizer(tm) versions found in our analysis differ slightly from those originally disclosed by Sony and Toshiba. The die size of the Emotion Engine(tm) is 226 mm2, and is slightly below the originally specified 240mm2. The new Graphics Synthesizer(tm) is much smaller with a die size of only 183 mm2, and has significant layout differences in comparison to the original 279mm2 device specified. We believe that both devices use a 4 metal 0.25 microns hybrid process (0.25 microns minimum interconnect features with 0.18 microns transistor gates)", confirmed Ms. Elvidge.

Dailyradar posted a review of Sony’s puzzle game, I.Q. Remix.
Some of it:

If all this strategy becomes too much for just one guy to handle, there's a new two-player mode that is surprisingly fun. Working in concert with each other, two people can attack the waves of cubes with gusto, concentrating on linking combos for huge points. Strangely enough, though, the two characters are identical, even down to their color. This is a big no-no in two-player games and tends to be a bit confusing.

Golf Paradise Impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:09 PM, EDT
IGN posted some impressions of T&E Soft's golf game, Golf Paradise.
Here’s a bit:

In the end, I wasn't expecting too much from Golf Paradise, but it turned out better than I expected. The camera system and the story mode are excellent features that I would like to see in all golf games. However, I find the difficulty hitting driver tee shots a little hard to forgive. Also, the lack of character in the characters detracts from the game somewhat. Combining these with other lesser factors leaves me feeling slightly detached from the game. You either like golf games or you don't, but with the good ones, you find yourself drawn into the game, whether its due to the characters, graphics, gameplay or a combination of all three. I just don't feel any desire to play the game, despite its positives.

Interview with Dave Perry - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 4:21 PM, EDT
Daily Radar slapped up an interview with Dave Perry, president of Shiny Entertainment.
Here’s a bit:

DR: Is anti-aliasing an unbeatable problem on the PS2?
DP: No, I think the biggest complaint that I keep hearing is texture memory... Game developers are NEVER happy. We always want more and more and more and more.

DR: What will it take to make great PS2 games (time to learn the development tools, large teams, ambition, creativity, etc... )?
DP: It will take games designed to really push the specific machine. I hate seeing all the classic Japanese "tile puzzle" games and things like that... They just don't reveal the strength of the machine. At Shiny, we will be giving this hardware 110% and are REALLY looking forward to seeing what we can pull off.

PS2 distribution tactics hailed as grandest ever - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 4:19 PM, EDT
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Sunday edition posted an article about the online sales and distribution tactics at the PS2 launch:

TOKYO --The "grandest-ever distribution tactics" were being played out for Japanese consumers on March 4, when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. released its long-awaited home video-game console PlayStation2. It will surely go down in the annals of Japanese product distribution.

Sagawa Express Co. undertook the delivery of PlayStation2. By 5:00 p.m. March 4, it had finished delivering all 120,000 units, previously ordered via the Internet.

"It was the largest operation of its kind ever conducted in Japan in terms of delivering products on the day of their release, though in terms of the quantity of deliveries (on a single day), it was dwarfed by direct mail sales," a Sagawa official said.

Did you import a PS2? - Comments (15)

Neo just lost all his saves on his memory card… :/
So if you have had any problem with your memcard, be sure to get a new one, or else you might lose all your saves… (Note, Sony has fixed the memory card problem already, this is just a warning for those who have the early PS2s)
Neo sent me this message:
"All my saves has disappeared from my 8 Meg memory card. All that is shown are blue file boxes, and when I high-light the box the text given reads "Broken Data." This has never happened before...all my saves are destroyed.
Ridge Racer completed, Tekken Completed, Dead or Alive 2 Completed, Fantavison Completed, Kessen over 70 hours, Golf over 20 hours, and driving E-motion, just started to get the GT cars...All gone!"

A preview of Konami’s Jikkyou World Soccer 2000 has been added.
Here’s a slice:

If there is one thing that is a given for PS2 sports fans to look forward to, it’s that they will be getting at the very least an updated version of possibly the best soccer game ever. If Jikkyou follows in the same footsteps as Perfect Striker than we can be sure to see fast paced gameplay, and highly intuitive controls. Even for a casual soccer fan, they will probably get hooked on this game in the first five minutes of play.

Konami interview - Comments (5)
Posted by @ 12:18 PM, EDT
Core fired up an interview with Konami’s Yasuo Okuda about their soccer game, Jikkyou World Soccer 2000.
Here’s a slice:

Question: Referring back to the realism aspect, you can see individuals hairs and teeth in the close-up's of Jikkyou 2000. This level of detail is only possible on the PlayStation2?

Okuda-san: You looked close! [laughs..] The shapes of their heads, noses, and eyes are different as well. Real players also have different gestures when they score a goal or run in front of the camera, so we're working on that also. On the original PlayStation we could make 3D models, but they were very basic. Most of the player models were almost the same, and very plain looking with the same dot eyes. [laughs..]

Question: All right, final question. In previous titles there was an emphasis on knowing certain tactics in soccer playing, which made it hard for beginners to play. How is this being addressed in Jikkyou 2000 for the PlayStation2?

Okuda-san: Yes, that's an important aspect. We're trying to create something both beginners and experts can enjoy. There are basic controls for shooting and passing, but experts can pull off 'pass-through' and 'one-two' pass-shoot combinations as well.

The Secrets of Tekken Tag Tournament - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 12:14 PM, EDT
IGN smacked up an article about all the extra goods in TTT.
Here’s a bit of it:

Theater
Tekken Tag Tournament's Theater option will open up once the player beats the game with any of the game's characters. Unlike Dead or Alive 2, players can cheat and put the game on the easiest difficulty setting, cut down the number of rounds, and lower the time limit to make things easier.
With this option, players will have the opportunity to view the ending animations for the characters that they have beaten the game with, including the same endings with the characters' other outfits. Furthermore, it gives the player the chance to view any of the four different movies: Opening Movie, Arcade Movie, EMBU, and EMBU2. Last, but not least, there's a music player that allows gamers to listen to the game's excellent musical soundtrack.

Tekken Tag reviews - Comments (13)
Posted by @ 12:13 PM, EDT
Gaming Age put up a review of Namco’s fighter.
Here’s a slice:

Visually, TTT is a real treat. Running in high resolution at a super-slick 60fps, TTT displays precious little of the jag or aliasing problems that has been much publicised of late. Even through a component RGB connection, one has to squint and concentrate quite hard to be seriously bothered, much less even pick up the faults. As far as this reviewer is concerned, it's a non-issue.

They also slapped up a few movies of the game. Go here to check them out.

Gamespot also kicked up a review of TTT, giving it 9.2/10.
Here’s a bit:

Aside from the standard tag-battle arcade mode, there is also a one-on-one game that makes Tekken Tag Tournament more like the previous Tekken games, as well as the standard team battle (though it is now a tag-team battle), time attack, and survival modes.

Movie 1 (7 MB)
Movie 2 (8 MB)
Movie 3 (8.6 MB)

Gamespot posted their review of DOA2, giving it 9.4/10.
Here’s a bit.

Unlike many other games, Dead or Alive 2 stands out in the polish department. It's not enough that the in-game character models look better than the prerendered intro-movie models from DOA, but they are also as good as, if not better than, anything else out there. The facial models in DOA2 are simply outstanding. Best viewed while watching the in-game cinemas, the facial detail is as good as the CG models Tecmo had rendered to promote the game. Character detail aside, the unbilled stars of the game are the environments. Running in nice, high resolutions, DOA2's arenas vary from realistic snowfields to transparent marble and glass floors, all of which are truly stunning in their clarity and detail. Wooden mountain temples, industrial towers, and castle regalia adorn the game, many with three or four different looks depending on how many tiers are available.

TTT Vs DOA2 - Comments (20)
Posted by @ 3:19 PM, EDT
IGN posted a huge comparison between the two fighting games.
Here’s a bit of the article:

While DOA2 is quicker in the tag department, Tekken is by no means slow. It's possibly a millisecond slower than the arcade game by the same name, which means it is a pretty damn good conversion. Strangely enough, while TTT is slightly slower with tags, Namco's game is actually superior in the juggling department, setting up a weird quandary. The fighting system is set up to greater juggle possibilities. And you can still get great juggles out of TTT's tag feature, but they could be better.

Sony faces difficulty in PS2 utility disc recall - Comments (35)
Posted by @ 3:43 PM, EDT
A bit of an article from the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Thursday morning edition:

Producing a device that can play back DVDs sold in foreign countries is forbidden under an international agreement among makers of DVD players and movie companies because many films are released at different times around the world.

Sony Computer Entertainment decided to recall the software for 1.25 million units to fix the problem. Since April 1, it has been replacing the software by mail. "In three days we sent out over 1,000 memory cards containing the replacement start-up software," a company official said.

But the recall effort has been hindered by the large volume of machines shipped and the fact that some users welcome the "defect." It will be impossible for Sony Computer Entertainment to recall all the software, according to some electronics industry observers.

PS2 helps expand DVD market: Survey - Comments (11)
Posted by @ 3:42 PM, EDT
From the Nikkei Industrial Daily Wednesday edition:

TOKYO -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation2 DVD/game console is helping to expand the DVD market, according to a survey conducted by The Nihon Keizai Shimbun one month after the unit's March 4 release.

Some 53% of respondents who own the console have bought up to five DVDs since purchasing a PlayStation2, and 4% have purchased more than six. Another 30% have rented between one and five DVDs. Only 23% of respondents have not purchased or rented DVDs.
Asked about their objective in buying the console, 74% of respondents chose "playing video games and watching DVDs," 20% chose "mainly playing games," and 6% selected "mainly watching DVDs."

Those answers were different when customers were asked about their actual use of the console, with 52% saying they use the console primarily for games, 33% choosing a combination of games and DVDs, and 15% saying they use PlayStation2 mainly to watch DVDs.

More than 90% of respondents said they were satisfied with the unit. Some 15% said the unit is "much better than expected," 56% chose "as good as expected," and another 20% selected "satisfactory."

The survey was conducted online on March 29 and April 1, and 4,381 people responded. Of that number, 2,567 had purchased the unit, 787 had not, and 1,027 intended to buy a PlayStation2 console in the near future.

N-GEN2 for PS2? - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 2:46 PM, EDT
slapped up an interview with Curly Monsters about the PSX game N-GEN.
Here’s a question from the interview:

CVG: Will there be an N-GEN series in the same way Psygnosis expanded WipEout? Are there definite plans in place for a sequel?

Curly Monsters: At present there are discussions regarding future projects for Curly Monsters, one of these discussions is for N-Gen2. If we do choose to do N-Gen2 it'll almost certainly be on PS2. We believe PS2 in particular will give us the latitude to realise even more fully the N-Gen Racing potential and we'd look to expand on the N-Gen experience and make it even more convincing and compelling. We've already got a load of new ideas on the drawing boards for ways of developing it much further for a sequel.

Famitsu interviews producers of Metal Gear Solid and Vagrant Story - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:45 PM, EDT
Here’s a bit from the interview, posted at GIA:

Finally, I would like to ask both of you what direction both of you will take from now on.

Kojima: Matsuno-san, what is your following project?

Matsuno: As you will know, since there is Square's plan of PlayOnline together with the PS2, it will inevitably be related to that. IT won't be something you can call a package, it most likely will be something involving an online premise that we will make little by little. I still don't know myself exactly what it will be. What about you, Director Kojima?

Kojima: Naturally, I'll be making games like games are meant to be made. I am doing this also for all the users that have been with me since the beginning. I'm also thinking of making use of the DVD ability of the PS2. Let's just say that Ill be making games closer to something like movies.

Matsuno: I as well, not only want to fulfil the expectations everyone has of what I will do next, but I also want to try and tackle new challenges. Therefor, online games in which users can participate seem naturally charming to me. There, as long as a little bit of my "taste" is implemented, I wouldn't mind making something entirely different… Basically what I mean by this, since we are in the stage of planning, I am not really in a position to talk about.

King of the PS2 Fighters - Comments (13)
Posted by @ 2:44 PM, EDT
Gamefan kicked up an article where they compare DOA2, TTT and SFEX3 to see which is the winner.
Here’s a slice:

Gameplay: Dead or Alive 2
Ah, yes, perhaps the most import factor in any fighting game…gameplay. Most fighting games have their own distinct flavor when it comes to control, but only a few really get the blood pumping and offer a true extension of your actions on-screen. This, my friends, is where Dead or Alive 2 excels; the gameplay's ultra-smooth, and is incredibly easy to pick up. No quarter-circle fireball motions here--just some plain and simple kick-punch variations. I have to admit that Tekken’s combo-heavy tap-tap-tap fighting system did grow on us, but when push comes to shove, DOA 2 is still the modern-day fighting king.

Gamespot found out some cool secrets in TTT.
Here’s a bit of the article:

But the most off-the-wall added feature is Tekken Bowl. This mode is a little bowling minigame. You pick two characters, just like the normal game. Each fighter has different stats that bring variance in power, speed, and ball control. Since you're picking two characters, you can create a little team that specializes. For instance, P-Jack throws incredibly hard and fast, but it's occasionally difficult to place the ball exactly how you'd like.

TTT first impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:40 PM, EDT
The people over at PSX Nation already got their hands on Tekken Tag Tournament and posted some impressions of the game.
Some of it:

Well, although the delivery was late, my excitement and joy isn't. Yes Tekken Tag arrived at Katastrophe HQ and with much joy we plugged the game right into the PS2 with which Toenail, who had been practicing on T3, promptly kicked my butt. That's alright because I was pretty overwhelmed by what I was seeing.
Reports from the GDC had me worried about what Tekken Tag Tournament would look like but that quickly faded as I saw Heihachi drop me like a bottle of milk hitting the floor. All those promises of blades of grass moving and facial expressions seemed to becoming true. However as with all first generation software, it failed to really knock me off my socks. That's ok though as TTT is very impressive nonetheless.

To absorb heat, heat pipes are incorporated at the locations where the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer microchips are mounted. To top it all, a high-performance, heat-conductive silicon rubber sheet is laid between heat pipes and the PCB. "Metallic feelers of coarse grains, which were blended with other materials to raise heat conduction, were found at cross sections of the silicon rubber. The silicon rubber is likely to be specially developed for PlayStation2, the heat transfer specialist said.
