EA ships NBA Live 2002 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:22 AM, EST
EA announced today it's shipping NBA LIVE 2002 for the PS2 and the PSOne.
Here’s a bit of the press release:

"We started with the goal of making NBA LIVE 2002 the complete basketball experience; from pregame to postgame and everything in-between," said producer Kevin Wilkinson. "Our focus was improving the gameplay and making the game so real that it feels like the player at home is actually perspiring underneath the hot arena lights. We added amazing pre-game locker room scenes, bench scenes, player interaction, in addition to new shooting and passing physics, over 50 dunks and a variety of new finishing moves close to the basket."

NBA LIVE 2002 possesses numerous new features that will keep players going from the preseason through the NBA Finals. Players can build their own dynasty, like the Lakers of the 1980's or the Bulls of the 1990's, in the all-new Franchise Mode. In Franchise Mode, players manage an NBA franchise for up to 10 years and run the teams day-to-day operations. Players can view scouting reports on rookies coming out of school and then draft them to replace retired players and outgoing free agents. Trades are another option, but the salary cap must be heeded or the trade will be rejected.
Franchise Mode allows players to take teams and make them uniquely theirs.

Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:26 AM, EST
We added a review of Acclaim’s BMX game:

Extreme sports games can have all of the visual splendor in the world but if they do not have a tight control mechanism in place, they quickly become door stops. Fortunately, the makers of Dave Mirra 2 have sorted out the control issues that plagued the original PS title. Controlling the bikes for the most part is good. Problems arise when there are too many obstacles in the level. This usually results in bouncing off items and losing control. The trick system is massive featuring just over 1500 tricks. Pulling off each trick is user friendly thanks to the trick modifier which allows players to modify tricks. Thus, linking numerous combos is possible and quite enthralling once you get the hang of it.

Gallop Racer 2001 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:42 AM, EDT
We added a review of Tecmo’s horse racing game:

Navigating through the game is done via a large number of poorly translated menu screens. Navigator Cindy ( I swear that’s her name) guides you through the ins and outs of buying your first horse and entering your first race, but after that you are on your own. This is where the amount of detail makes the game very difficult if you don’t know much about horse racing. You can buy horses with varying attributes, strengths, and weaknesses, and its up to you to race them in the proper fields where you can utilize their talents best. This is key, because winning races has more to do with the skill of the horse, than the skill of you, the jockey. That’s not to say all you do is watch, because it isn’t, and an unskilled jockey can easily lose a race for a horse that is favored to win.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:16 AM, EDT
We added a review of Namco’s platformer, Klonoa 2:

Klonoa 2 is one of those games that you can pop directly into your PS2 and start playing immediately. The control while on the simplistic side of things is more than enough for what the environments demand. This is great but as you close in on the end of the game, you will feel that something has been left out. Perhaps this feeling would have been satisfied if some power up moves were unlockable as you progress.

Winback review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:16 AM, EDT
We also added a review of Koei’s action game, Winback:

Hiding and then firing, a la Time Crisis is a huge part of the game. Crates, boxes, trailers, and walls litter the landscape, providing you with ample cover as you guide your hero across the level. Stealth isn’t too much of a factor, but it is possible to sneak around and surprise the occasional guard here and there. Should you fail at your efforts to get by undetected, it’s no big deal because the guards aren’t packing a whole lot of brainpower. Once they discover you, their routine is activated and they will perform it until one of the two of you has died.

Dynasty Warriors 3 Media Update - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 10:17 AM, EDT

Some would claim that Koei's Dynasty Warriors 3 doesn't advance all that far beyond its predecessor. They point to the similar action-oriented gameplay, and graphical presentation that's fairly familiar. I dismiss their arguments with a wave of my hand, pointing my finger firmly toward the sight of Liu Bei striking down the ranks of his foes atop an elephant. Yes, you can now ride elephants in Dynasty Warriors. This is extremely cool.

Extreme G 3 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:16 AM, EDT
We posted a review of Acclaim’s racer:

The premise of the game has not changed much from the first Extreme G game. As a futuristic racer, you must race around the stomach churning courses while attempting the gun down savvy opponents. Winning races does not only allow progression to further races but it also enables you the ability to purchase weapon and bike upgrades using your cash winnings. The control side of things is a mixed bag. The handling can be very twitchy at times. Throughout the game you never really get a sense of full control over your vehicle.

Portal Runner review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:16 AM, EDT
We also added a review of 3DO’s platformer, Portal Runner:

The level designs are pretty standard for a platformer. Find certain items, solve simple puzzles and get from point A to point B. Nothing that a below average gamer or child couldn't handle. The levels can be large at times, but the problem is they are not very interactive which makes each successive level boring.
An interesting addition is the Fury Meter. As Leo's Fury Meter rises, he becomes stronger, faster and more vulnerable. You will have to use some strategy and common sense in order to keep Leo at the right level of fury. This concept works at times while at others is an annoyance.

Back to the drawing board, then, and The Wrath of Cortex is the result. Unmistakably Bandicoot in practically every way. You've got your 'getting chased into the screen' bits, your 'slipping around on ice' bits and your 'eat enough apples to give the world terminal indigestion' sub-games. There's a load of new ideas as well, including some stages that look suspiciously like the arcade game Super Monkey Ball.

PlayStation 2 Update: Rukagaki - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:27 PM, EDT

Tonight we're pleased to present the first footage from Taito's premiere PlayStation 2 RPG, Rukagaki Oukoku. Scheduled for release this December in Japan and recently shown in playable form at the Autumn Tokyo Game Show, Rukagaki is best described as a 'hands on' RPG. Thereby, players actually design characters in the game through a series of simple drawing tools. Albeit graphically simplistic, Rukagaki focuses heavily on player created storyline elements. Below is nearly five minutes of footage demonstrating the player creation process.

Ace Combat 4 Review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:22 PM, EDT

Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies is almost inarguably the best fighter sim ever made for a console, so Namco probably shouldn't be too worried about how this one's going to do. It's not necessarily a rethinking of the Ace Combat style of gameplay, but then it didn't need to be -- Ace has always had just about the right balance between arcade and simulation presentation for a console game (with Air Force Delta sitting too far to the left and PC sims off in their own world far to the right). Rather, this is still Ace Combat...just much, much bigger.

Grand Theft Auto 3 ships - Comments (2)

Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto 3 today.
Here’s a bit of the press release:

The previous incarnations of "Grand Theft Auto" have achieved cult status worldwide and have sold over 4.7 million units to date. Now, the third installment of "Grand Theft Auto" is set to hit the world stage as a groundbreaking, genre-busting title. Featuring a fully 3D living city, a combination of narrative driven and non-linear gameplay and a completely open environment, the game represents a huge leap forward in interactive entertainment. For the first time, players are put at the heart of their very own gangster movie, and let loose in a fully realized 3-Dimensional city, in which anything can happen and probably will.

Madden 2002 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:35 AM, EDT
We kicked up a review of EA’s latest football game, Madden 2002:

Madden 2002 offers a staggering amount of replay value that is lessened only by the absence of online play. There’s a create-a-team feature that allows the user to draft a team, create their uniforms, name the team, and even create their own stadium. Madden cards are back this year with a few new additions, but the same basic concept. Accomplishing certain tasks like breaking a 20-yard run, intercepting a pass, or sacking the quarterback, gives you a certain amount of points that can then be used to purchase Madden cards. These cards will increase the attributes of the player on the card, unlock new stadiums, or one of a large number of cheats. This year’s version has cheerleader cards, which other than being nice to look at, aren’t too exciting.

NFL Quarterback Club 2002 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:35 AM, EDT
We also posted a review of Acclaim’s NFL Quarterback Club 2002:

The gameplay mechanics are a little improved over last year but it is still sorely lacking. The play layout is awkward to use and as a result you waste a lot of clock time trying to manipulate the menus. The on-field play itself is not balanced as it should be. The running game is just way too easy, especially when you control one of the superstar running backs. Bursting through the line and sprinting down the field to a touchdown is more regular than it should be. As a result, the game is just too easy to win.

While Microsoft succeeded in attracting players to the Xbox at the Autumn Tokyo Game Show last weekend, Sony had several surprises in store for attendees. One of them being a playable demo disc of Naughty Dog's upcoming PlayStation 2 action title Jak & Daxter. NHL Hitz 20-02 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:23 AM, EDT
We added a review of Midway’s latest NHL game:

The gameplay is the adrenaline , over-the-top style that we have come to expect from the Blitz franchise. Players can leap, glide, check, pass and score on would-be defenders. Hitz is a three-on-three (plus a goalie) romp complete with big hits that can break the glass and the ability to have from one player to the entire team on fire. When you catch fire, all of your attributes will increase slightly making it easier to score goals.

Nostromo p45 Controller review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:18 AM, EDT
We added a review of Belkin Components’ PS2 controller, Nostromo p45 GamePad:

The first thing you will notice upon picking up the p45 is how well it fits into your hands. A common complaint among many gamers is the small size of most gamepads. Fortunately, the p45 addresses this issue and you have more than enough space for your hands to breathe. Part of this is thanks to the larger triggers found on the front of the controller. Distinguishing between the 4 triggers is now hassle free. Another innovative feature of the p45 is the silver action stabilizer. This arch found on the end of each handle allows you to steady the controller for extended play. We found this very useful when playing driving games such as GT3.

Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 9:11 AM, EDT
We added a review of Angel Studios’ off road racer:

Wide Open is an arcade racer throughout. Simulation fans will find little here except the ability to tweak a number of options on the vehicle. After tweaking a number of vehicles, we found the overall effect of the adjustments did little to the usual outcome of the race. Controlling the vehicles is quite simple and elementary. This is good as all you need to do is pick up the controller and get right into the game. The tracks are nicely laid out, simple to follow and the AI vehicles behave as they should. In early races, competition is kept pretty tight and anyone can win the race. Further into the game, things start to get downright silly. Suddenly every AI vehicle wants to run you off the course and make you spin out. On first offence I thought "O.k. two can play at that game". But when it started happening two or three times per race I thought "This is downright ridiculous you *&#!"

Rune: Viking Warlord review
Posted by @ 6:03 AM, EDT
We added a review of Rockstar Games’ Viking game:

The game’s level design is decidedly uninspired , be it the locales or the way in which they are laid out. It’s often times difficult to discern where to go or what to do because the object with which you need to interact is hard to see or in a weird area. I was a big fan of the cheap deaths that seemed to be everywhere. Whether it was getting lost in the dark water because of the poor camera, or walking towards a wall and falling to my death because the floor had a foot wide gap between it and the wall, there are many frustrating ways in which to die. This problem is exacerbated due to the disgustingly long load times that occur after every death or level change. A minute to load a level every time I die? You’ve got to be kidding me.

We added a review of the adventure game ICO:

All the visual production in the world cannot compensate for poor control mechanics. Fortunately, that is not an issue here. The developers took pain staking measures to ensure the gameplay matches the visuals. The meat of the game comes in the form of a plethora of puzzles that in some cases will have you baffled for hours on end. Basically you must get yourself and the princess Yorda from point A to point B. Using your skills of deduction and observation, you must figure out how the environment can be manipulated in order to get to the next point and ultimately escape.

Formula One 2001 interview
Posted by @ 5:53 AM, EDT
We got a few words with SCEA Producer Taku Imasaki about Formula One 2001.
Here’s a bit:

Mike Weatherup: Previous console Formula 1 titles have had grave difficulty trying to balance an arcade approach with a viable simulation approach. As a result these titles have lacked any real fun for the non-Formula 1 race fan. What have you done with Formula One 2001 to address these issues?

Taku Imasaki: The situation is now different with PlayStation 2. A simulation approach using the PlayStation 2, if done right, will actually translate into a fun experience, thanks to the calculation and drawing capabilities of the new hardware. With the Formula 1 audience growing significantly every year, our focus was to make this game as authentic as possible. Dark Angel review

We added a review of Metro3D’s Dark Angel:

Conventional wisdom states that if you are going to make a game that is going to require such an insane amount of time to beat, that you’re going to put some sort of plot behind it. In this case, that line of thinking would be dead wrong, because this game has very little going for its story line. Impatient gamers who bypass the instruction manual and head straight into the thick of things, will have difficulty discerning any semblance of a plot altoghether. You control Anna, a Champion, who protects against the forces of evil (That’s word for word what the manual says - sounds riveting!). Your job is to weaken the evil armies in Gothos, teach the townspeople to defend themselves, and defeat the vile Shadow Lord, all in one year’s time. This involves going from town to town and interacting with the town folk, who will sell you items, and ask you to go on quests for them, and then going out and killing more people than a holy war.

For some reason the developers decided not to go with an auto aim feature. As a result, trying to get accurate hits proves frustrating. It also means that ammunition is often wasted by blasting it all over the environment.
