Gran Turismo 3 impressions - Comments (5)
Posted by @ 11:03 AM, EST
We posted our first impressions of the Gran Turismo 3 demo.
Here’s a bit:

The game speeds along at what appears to be a constant 60 frames per second refresh rate. The sensation of virtual speed has been recreated like never before. This is evident when you drop the camera to first person view of the race. Unlike other webzines, we looked at this demo for hours on end before committing anything in written word. As a result, and this will break many hearts, I was able to find 2 small instances of draw-in in the one course we were given to play. It will not affect gameplay but it is present and hopefully will not show up in the final release or in other tracks. This is another example of not enough console power but how well developers can program using the tools and skills they have.

The Bouncer reader review - Comments (1)

We added a reader review of Square’s RPG-fighter, The Bouncer.
A slice:

The modes of play come in 3 main parts The story mode in which you pick 1 of the 3 bouncers, the Vs mode in where you can play with 4 people if you have multitap. Also in the Vs mode comes with a team battle and a battle royal mode for pure mayhem. Then there is the survival mode in where you pick 1 of the 3 main characters, if you notice in the survival mode there is about 20 extra slots for secret characters...

3DO today announced it has begun shipping the puzzle game Aqua Aqua for the PS2.
Here’s a bit of the press release:

The AquaAqua game is an addictive, fast-action, 3D puzzle game set in a liquid landscape. Players trap water by positioning pieces as fast as they fall to form dams and lakes. Watch the weather; if it rains too much your lake will overflow and the water goes down the drain. Lose too much water and it's "game over."

Players maneuver land pieces to create hills and mountains that form lakes that hold water pieces and the rain. Water pieces are dropped in the hills and mountains to create lakes of all sizes. Deep lakes attract lake mates and the more lake mates you have, the higher your score will be. If too much water accumulates in one spot and leaks out, you can dry it up with a Fireball and score points. Downer pieces can be used to decrease land mass whish decreases the chance of an earthquake. Watch out for those Bombs, though; they can leave holes through which precious water can escape.

Core posted first impressions of Namco’s RPG, Seven: The Cavalry of Molmorth.
Here’s a bit:

In some ways, Seven plays like a standard RPG: the player must move their party around in mostly 2D isometric environments, talking to NPCs and wandering into areas where monsters lurk. However, combat supports a large number of allied characters (up to sixteen), so the player does not directly control their attacks individually; rather s/he controls the formation of troops by rotating ranks of troops from the back to the front at the end of each turn. This system looks like it will give rise to some interesting strategies later in the game.

Core also posted first impressions of Bandai’s mech fighter, Mobile Suit Gundam.
A slice:
The combat itself is fast and intense, throwing waves of enemies at the player and his AI controlled allies. The environments are huge and open, giving the player freedom to explore and destroy things at will. The weapons are well balanced and fun to use, but unfortunately the euphoria of wielding your Mobile Suit’s withering arsenal is marred by the klutzy controls. The key layout is not great, and can only be reconfigured superficially, but what is most frustrating is the inconsistency when moving. For instance, when simply walking or staffing, the MS seems sluggish, and control is annoyingly imprecise. However, double tapping in one direction produces jet-assisted movement, but for some reason MSG is all to eager to interpret any repeated d-pad input as a double-tap, and the author often found himself catapulted off in some untoward direction when all he wanted to do was turn left.

FFX preview - Comments (0)

GIA kicked up a preview of Square’s upcoming PS2 RPG, Final Fantasy X:

Some technological advances remains, however. Final Fantasy X will make the move into full 3-D, abandoning the pre-rendered backdrops of the past three FFs for a polygon-based world viewable from any perspective. While this will no doubt provide the developers with more cinematic freedom, FF X will still use Square's trademark rendered FMV sequences to illustrate key events. FF X's FMV will even feature Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

Perhaps even more noteworthy is the sure-to-be-controversial use of voice acting for the first time in Final Fantasy history. Akira Ishida (Kaworu in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fisheye in Sailor Moon, and Alex in Lunar 1) will provide the voice of hero Tide; other voice actors have yet to be announced. Neither has the extent to which speech will be incorporated -- but if other RPGs are any indication, expect the characters to speak only during battle and FMV sequences.

Core posted first impressions of Square’s RPG-fighter, The Bouncer:

The Bouncer’s graphics are certainly some of the best we’ve seen on the PS2 to date, but this may only serve to brand the game a "tech demo" in the eyes of some. However, at first look this game seems like a fun, if not terribly deep, fighter, and may make you wax nostalgic for the days of quarter-vortexes like Double Dragon and Bad Dudes.

Gamespot posted a preview/interview with Volition about the first person shooter Red Faction:
Several levels in the game require Parker to use his head instead of his trigger finger and actually have him go under cover as an Ultor executive. As an executive you'll have to interact with other Ultor employees, but you'll have to maintain your deceptive shroud. In these levels you'll be stripped of everything but your silenced pistol, and you'll have to decide whom to kill and where. This is important because if a corpse is discovered or if you're seen with a weapon, you'll have plenty of trouble to deal with. "You'll be able to shoot people in the stealth levels," said Lawrance, "but you'll have to do it quickly, when no one is around, and not let your victims raise the alarm." Additionally, after you kill someone you'll have to figure out what to do with the body. "This is where being able to pick up and move bodies is a factor," Lawrance elaborated. "You'll not only have to figure out whom to kill, but also how to cover it up. There will be a lot of exploring and observing."

IGN posted a review of 3DO’s World Destruction League: Thunder Tanks:
The main reason to own this game is for its multiplayer capabilities. While the feature set is pretty much the same as the single player mode, the game's fun factor just goes through the roof when you're blowing up tanks controlled by your friends instead of the computer. The action is always fast and furious and with the wide variety of maps, tanks, multiplayer game objectives and the ability to team up with friends or just have a free-for-all, the game's multiplayer play value is almost without limit.

US Gran Turismo 3 announced - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 5:31 PM, EST
SCEA recently announced the Spring 2001 release of Gran Turismo 3 A-spec.
Here’s a bit of the press release:

"We are thrilled to bring the Gran Turismo franchise to the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system," said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. "Gran Turismo 3 A-spec truly revolutionizes the racing category, bringing a new dimension in physics, graphics and special effects that blurs the line between game and reality. It will appeal to a much broader audience and will drive the formation of the PlayStation 2 platform."

Gran Turismo 3 A-spec immerses players into the most true-to-life environments ever realized, including special effects like blinding sun glare hitting the windshield, shimmering heat rays rising off the tarmac and real-time reflections on the cars, adding to the overall experience. Improved opponent A.I. (artificial intelligence) further adds to the realism, allowing players to experience a true sense of emotion emanating from the opposing cars. As drivers respond to annoying tailgating, they may pass you on the inside or perform sneering cut-offs. In addition, the power of PlayStation 2 allows for each car's characteristics to be accurately designed and calculated to handle according to the "real life" physics of that particular vehicle, taking into account weight, speed, friction, wind and more.

In Gran Turismo 3 A-spec, weather conditions, including enhanced fogging effects and rain, have been implemented to improve realism and add challenge to the racing experience. An enhanced Rally Mode adds further variety, allowing players to race through gravel tracks, kicking up dirt to impair their opponent's view. Dirt tracks offer a completely different driving experience with varying topography that changes how well each vehicle's traction handles the gravel tracks.

C&VG posted an interview with Noriaki Okamura, director of Konami's mech adventure Z.O.E.
A slice:

Paul Davies: The quality of character animation, in particular the faces close-up, is astonishing: would you say that such subtleties of expression are essential to your storytelling, or is the dialogue alone enough to make the necessary impact?

Noriaki Okamura: "Thank you very much. The synergy of the quality of the subtleties of expression, the dialogue, the acting, and the fun action elements that seem to have no impact on the storytelling itself are what make this game a game we are proud of."

PD: Are the levels structured in a linear fashion, or does the adventure require you to revisit previously accessed areas?

Noriaki Okamura: "The story itself if quite linear, but yes, you do have to revisit previously accessed areas at times to obtain items or solve puzzles."

DailyRadar posted first impressions of Square’s action-RPG, The Bouncer:

The meat of the game is comprised of a series of action-based scenes, kicking off in the bar itself, followed by an outdoor fight. Then it's on to the now legendary train-hopping scene, which is where we're introduced to the mysterious and curiously coifed Echidna (A certain Blake Fischer immediately nicknamed her "knuckles"). Along the way, certain mission parameters affect gameplay -- one example included a desperate search on rails for a key card; failing to find it results in the runaway train crashing violently into the station. The gaping hole that' s left causes seawater to come streaming in, and the next few missions become doubly challenging -- spend too long disposing of the opposition and you're up to your neck, as it were.

Core posted first impressions of Sony’s RPG, Dark Cloud:
Working through the dungeons is, again, a matter of finding the key that opens the door to the next level. There is a small twist in that the keys are planted on random enemies, so it is possible to find the key to the next level very quickly, or you might have to exterminate every last enemy in the level. Interestingly, the dungeon levels seem to be randomly generated from a collection of stock rooms, a la Diablo. At the outset, Toan is alone, but according to the manual other character may be added to his party. The player can then switch characters freely using a menu option.

Gamecenter posted a review of EA’s NASCAR 2001:
Furthermore, NASCAR 2001's control and sound are both right on the money. You'll have an easy time navigating your car through every track and around every turn, thanks to the tight control interface. Sonically, NASCAR 2001 delivers the goods with its accurate engine effects and excellent use of crew chatter. You'll be advised at every moment of the race as to where other drivers are as they approach you and when you need to bring in your car for a pit stop.

IGN posted a review of EA’s F1 Championship Season 2000:
Assuming that high realism levels are not a strict requirement for you and you just want to race, the game can be fun, but again, not in a terribly realistic way. The biggest problem is that the AI does not drive around the track at the right speeds around each corner. This means you're either watching as cars run away from you through a twisty bit unrealistically, or you are passing 3 or 4 corners stacked up waiting to make a slow turn. If you don't anticipate the latter event you can create quite an accident. If your damage is off, you can take out a bunch of cars this way, if that's you're definition of fun.

C&VG posted first impressions of Sony’s RPG, Dark Cloud:

As you take control of our dark haired hero, it becomes immediately obvious that Dark Cloud was made specifically for the PlayStation controller. You move the character with the left stick and rotate the camera with the right. Walking around and talking to NPCs will be instantly familiar, and the presentation comes over as a cross between Final Fantasy and Zelda. Take note of the small white hand in the option menus.

In addition to the stick control, you can spin the camera with the L1 and R1 buttons. Other touches include being able to transport yourself over massive spaces by pressing Select then moving the pointer to the desired location, all in the name of staving off boredom.

DailyRadar posted a review of EA’s F1 Championship Season 2000:
One major difference between this and previous incarnations of the F1 genre is the handling of the car. Instead of being twitchy, uncontrollable and unresponsive at speed, these cars (weather permitting) actually obey your analog movements precisely -- and make a good case for finally abandoning the D-pad. Braking seems realistic and finally provides an incentive to use it. No more sliding onto the gravel at every second turn. The rumble function is used sparingly and to good effect.

Gamespot added a review of Kemco’s Top Gear Dare Devil:
Your missions invariably involve you driving around, picking up the coins that are scattered about the city, and returning to a finish point, which is oddly represented by an eerie green mist, before your time runs out. With only 60 seconds to grab upward of 15 coins, you'll be depending on the nitro and time extension power-ups, which are also scattered across the city. The gameplay never deviates from this formula, and with the only variables being the start and finish points and the placement of the coins and power-ups, the game quickly loses any novelty it may have had and becomes an exercise in tedium.

NASCAR 2001 review - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 6:47 PM, EST
We added a review of EA’s PS2 racer, NASCAR 2001.
Here’s a bit:

At the track you have a number of options in order to ready your team for the big race. These include tuning up the car, taking a test run and taking a qualifying run. Finally you can choose to take the race. During the race you will have to keep an eye on your cars' functions and listen to your pit crew for constant advice. While racing you really have to figure out how you will win the race. This is partly due to the smart A.I. EA Sports has devised for this game. Each driver is rated in multiple categories so that computer drivers model real-life tendencies of NASCAR drivers - Earnhardt drives low into the corner, Jarret drives consistently on long runs, and Gordon is smooth in and out of the turns. While this detail to A.I. provides a challenge, at times it can cause frustration. Try leading for 90% of the race only to lose at the last turn.

Iraq buying PS2s - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:46 PM, EST
Worldnetdaily reports that 4,000 PS2 units have been purchased in the United States and shipped to Iraq in the last two to three months.
Here’s a bit of the article:

A single PlayStation can generate up to 75 million polygons per second. Polygons, as noted in the DIA report, are the basic units used to generate the surface of 3-D models -- extremely useful in military design and modeling applications.

"When I first saw this report, I was highly skeptical," said an intelligence source. "So, I did some checking with computer experts I know within the Department of Defense. From what they tell me, bundling these video game units is very feasible."

“Applications for this system are potentially frightening," said an intelligence source. "One expert I spoke with estimated that an integrated bundle of 12-15 PlayStations could provide enough computer power to control an Iraqi unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV -- a pilotless aircraft."

Namco’s console plans - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:44 PM, EST
In an interview with Japanese magazine Dengeki-Oh Nacmo spoke about its next gen console plans:

Haraguchi said, "At the very least, until the Xbox and Gamecube are released, the game market is focused on the PlayStation 2. Compared to the other two consoles, it has a year head start. That's a very big advantage. Therefore, from 2001, Namco's consumer business will center on the PS2."

However, Namco is by no means limiting itself. Haraguchi continued, "That doesn't mean we won't develop for platforms other than the PS2. We will go ahead with development for the Xbox and Gamecube, and we would like to release games for them. Of course part of that is because we want to see how these new consoles do, but if you develop on multiple platforms, there's the added benefit of reducing the development costs for each title."

Gamespot added a preview along with screenshots of Irrational Games' adventure game, The Lost:

Irrational Games describes The Lost as an update of the classic novel Dante's Inferno. An update, though, means a lot has changed. For starters, Virgil isn't your guide, and you're obviously no poet. More importantly, though, there's no assurance that you'll escape your journey into the underworld. You'll have to fight tooth and nail and solve lots of horrible puzzles if you plan to make it out in one piece with your daughter in tow. Amanda begins the game as an unspectacular fighter, but you will quickly have to learn how to handle yourself if you hope to last long in hell. You're not totally beholden to Amanda's mortal frame, though. When times are tough, she has supernatural friends to call on for assistance. In the course of your adventures Amanda will be able to assume the form of one of three denizens of hell, Shadow, Light, and Corruption.

Gamespot also posted a hands-on preview of Pyro Studios’ strategy game, Commandos 2:
The game plays from a top-down perspective and takes place in real time. While the PC game uses a mouse pointer to achieve goals, the PS2 and Dreamcast versions will do away with the mouse pointer and let you control each member of the team directly. As each member of the commando team, you'll move about your environment, interacting with obstacles and items while avoiding enemy units. Each member of the team has specialized abilities and weaponry and can achieve his or her goals through different means. Also, several obstacles require the skills of a certain team member, and this forces you to use the commandos together to successfully complete the mission.

IGN kicked up a review of 989 Sports' NCAA GameBreaker 2001:
Basically everything else about the control is the same as what one would expect in a 989 Sports GameDay or GameBreaker title. On offense, you can do special moves like spins, jukes, stiff arms, shoulder charges and speed bursts and on defense you can jump, do a swim move left or right and do a forearm shiver or bump a receiver on the line of scrimmage. The game also includes 989 Sports' vaunted Total Control Passing that lets players do things like lead, underthrow, and overthrow their receivers with a great amount of control.

IGN posted a review of 989 Sport’s NCAA Final Four 2001:
NCAA Final Four 2001 isn't horrible and if you must have a college basketball videogame, it's definitely worth giving a look, if only because of the fact that it's the only one for any next-generation system, but it's far from good. The game suffers from way too many AI and gameplay problems to be something that we could recommend, though, and the lack of key features that have become a staple in sports games, like a Dynasty mode, really hurts its overall value and appeal.

PS2 Monster Cable Review - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 4:48 PM, EST
We added a review of Monster Cable’s PS2 cables.
Here’s a bit:

We tested Monster's cable against both Sony's own cable and the one I purchased from Performance. While Sony's cable did have a few merits in terms of design and construction neither it nor Performance's cable could hold a candle to the sheer quality of the Monster cable. Using the Monster cable significantly reduced the signs of dot crawl on the three major brands of TVs we tested it on. Color reproduction was also slightly enhanced and more detail came through. Sound was also improved, with less electrical hiss and noise and cleaner highs and lows. The cable also comes in a snazzy blue color to match those ridiculously expensive horizontal and vertical stands most of us got suckered into purchasing.

MGS 2 impressions - Comments (0)

C&VG posted first impressions of the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that will ship with ZOE next March.
A slice:

The action: Snake is controlled mostly by the left analogue. Just like before, pushing against a vertical surface allows Snake to press his back against it. Basic MGS stuff. The first addition worthy of note is the new attack system. Using the square button Snake can either tap it to perform a Jump Out Shot (with back against the wall), or enter first person mode to take a more accurate shot. To be absolutely accurate, if you Snake is in no danger of being spotted, you can press and hold the square button then release once your aim is steady (This is what Mr Kojima was talking about in the CVG interview in May, where he demonstrated quick-draw or careful aim manoeuvres. Now we’ve seen it in action!). More fun can be had in first-person mode if you chose to punch instead of use a weapon. The ambient noise is also louder when in first-person mode – you’re hearing through Snake’s ears instead of being the distant observer.

Hideo Kojima interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:46 PM, EST
Feedmag posted an interview with Hideo Kojima, talking about Metal Gear Solid 2:

FEED: So what is it you're really excited about with Metal Gear 2?

KOJIMA: It's a much better game. There are a lot more ways to conceal yourself in MGS 2. For example, you can hide yourself in a locker. Or, contrarily, you can be discovered by the shadow you throw. Anyway, you can hide in a lot more different ways, and so the tension is higher; it's scarier. Players can perform more actions, and we are able to express a lot of things in a better way, like shadows. And we've added more things we can do with PlayStation 2 that we couldn't do on PlayStation 1. We're able to make the enemy more intelligent. Plus, like I was saying, our graphics have gotten better, so we can express sensual things.
It's much scarier than before. It's really fun, I'm telling you!

Volitionwatch posted an interview with James Tsai, Assistant Producer for Red Faction.
A slice:

What can you tell us about fire in the game? Will certain objects, like a pipe for example, emit fire when shot at enough?

There's a lot we can do in the game with our existing particle and physics systems. In fact, we already have high-pressure pipes that emit a jet of hot steam when struck with armor piercing rounds, which is very similar to what you're asking about. The steam shoots out at the location where the bullet hits and at the appropriate angle rather than just appearing as a generic effect - another way we hope to grab the player's attention and let them see just how much they can really interact with the world in Red Faction.

Nine parts arcade action and one part mech simulation, Gungriffon Blaze is a recipe for destruction. NFL Gameday 2001 review - Comments (4)
Posted by @ 9:46 PM, EST
Aaron kicked up a review of 989’s NFL Gameday 2001.
Here’s a bit:

I was pleasantly surprised when I found it wasn't terribly difficult to break through the line and put some pressure on the quarterback, sadly my joy turned to sorrow when I tried to actually tackle him. Just when you are within striking distance, your attack on the quarterback is quickly turned back when he performs the maneuver known as "raising his arm to throw the ball". This unexpected move causes EVERYONE on the defensive line to simultaneously jump up with their hands in the air (and wave them all around like they just don't care). Since jumping kills any forward momentum you may have had, the quarterback simply steps to the side and throws a touchdown pass. After showcasing its horrendous gameplay, Gameday gives up back to back touchdowns and goes into halftime down 23-0.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I’m busy with other work that is taking 12+ hours/day this week. I will try to add a few reviews during the week, but no news at all. Usually some news is posted in the forum, so be sure to check it out.
I haven’t had time to respond to any emails for some time so here are answers to the most common questions I get:

1. The cheat section of this site should be up and running late December/early January

2. I have no idea where you can get a PS2 without waiting, sorry.

Everything should be back to "normal" next week...

IGN translated an interview with Hideo Kojima.
A bit:

Q: First of all, I'd like to ask you about the MGS2 demo. How far along is it?

Kojima: The system (layout, engine, etc.) is basically done. It may be a bit biased for me to say it, but even at this stage, the demo is a lot of fun. Things like actions that should be in the final product are pretty much all in the demo.

Q: It sounds pretty good.

Kojima: Lengthwise, if you're just trying to clear it, it will probably take about an hour. But you can choose how to use each action, so there's various ways of playing it. For example, in just moving from point A to point B, along the way some people hide, some fight, etc. Just like in the previous game, you can do things like hide in a cardboard box (laughs). If you approach it like that, I think you can play the demo for hours.

Gamingmaxx posted an interview with 3DO, talking about the BattleTanx sequel, World Destruction League: Thunder Tanks.
A slice:

GMX: The BattleTanks series set a new standard for multiplayer games. How was the transition of the multiplayer mode for WDL over to PS2?

RZ: There was never any question that we would be supporting multiplayer on the PS2. Four-player split-screen was a fundamental design goal that we achieved with style. Remember, there are four times as many pixels on a PS2 screen as there were on an N64 - so things still look great even in split screen. We made a few compromises to keep the frame rate silky smooth, but it was generally clear sailing. We look forward to implementing Internet multiplayer in the future, but for now we think we've given you a damn good reason to buy a multi-tap.

Here’s a bit:

IGNPS2: You initially mentioned at ECTS that cars will take damage, and that there will be spectacular wipeouts. How much damage will each car take? Like will they be stripped down to a metal skeleton?

Tom: There aren't many parts of these cars that won't be able to join the carnage. Theoretically, yes, you could end up racing around in just an open wheeled shell of a machine. Our vehicle damage model is very realistic though. All possible damage permutations have been individually modeled and if playing in simulation mode a player's race will be over long before they're reduced to just a chassis and wheels. That said, vehicle parts flying off of the cars is a really cool feature both of the sport and of our game.

The main attraction of Roller Coaster, aside from the insanely charming graphics, is the customization involved. You really can tinker with every facet of your park. Change how much salt goes on the fries (more makes people thirsty and adds to drink sales, but too much makes them puke), the chances of winning at the sideshows and even what beats your janitors walk. There's not one time in this game that you look at something that seems amiss in the park and aren't able to get in and fix it to your liking.

Gamespot posted a review of EA’s FIFA 2001:
This year's game boasts the most advanced AI the series has seen. The computer controls the offense and defense of teams in exactly the manner the team's coach would. Less talented defenses rely on penalties and the offside trap, while powerful offensive lines plan their attacks and deliver the ball to speedy strikers. Defenders will work offenses and disrupt passing lines without overcommitting, while forwards and wings will rush the box and try to retain possession during the attack. The game features three different difficulty levels, and each level raises the ruthlessness of the AI in classic FIFA fashion.

We kicked up a review of EA’s soccer game:

I found that when setting up a game there was quite a bit of freedom given to me, whether I was setting up a friendly, or a whole season. I was able to customize everything I would want to, and even transfer players, though this process is quite a bit different from making a trade in Madden, I still enjoyed doing it. I raised the difficulty, raised the referee strictness (I'm no cheater) chose my weather, and headed off to the pitch for my match. The whole process was very simple, and I also liked being able to save my settings so they would be my default settings upon booting up the game next time.

Red Faction interview - Comments (0)

Gamereactor posted an interview with Volition, talking about the upcoming first-person shooter, Red Faction.
A slice:

What do you feel the possibilities of the GEO-MOD engine opens up for in a multiplayer team-based game, as we've heard rumors of will be included in Red Faction? And what does the "open-hole" gameplay possibly limit in this kind of game?

Geo-Mods and multiplayer offer a realm of possibility that hasn’t been addressed in past games. The impact on standard deathmatch or team deathmatch games is obvious; you can cut other players off from the rest of the pack hunt them down when they’re isolated, or blow out a catwalk and watch a bunch of your opponents tumble into the depths below. There’s also the chance of Geo-Mod specific modes, where the emphasis is not on racking up the highest number of frags but perhaps stopping a vehicle from reaching its destination, destroying a particular structure, etc. We also want to make sure the game is mod-friendly so we can watch gamers produce a popular and long-lasting community that players will enjoy being a part of. The “open-hole” gameplay translates into an open door for our creative fans.

Here’s a bit:

Finally, if you want to play a Rayman game - and if you do, you're presumably either an ultra-young gamer or one of those adults who has a fetish for nappies and being treated like a baby - then there's no reason whatsoever to do so on a PS2. The PS versions are perfectly adequate - Rayman 2, in particular, is near identical - and all Revolution does is smooth out the edges and make things a little more acceptable for the aesthetically principled.

Where NBA Live 2001 for the PlayStation 2 truly impresses is in its graphics. The game is far from completion, but it's already one of the most visually appealing sports games. What really galls about X-Squad, though, is that it could have been so good. "Motorhead 2 means that we will be significantly raising the standard, and creating a automobile racing game that gives the player an experience far beyond that which is expected. One of our major objectives is to be pioneers who create new trends in the industry, which is what we are doing by developing this new game," declares Senior Artist Marcus Nystrom. "Naturally, we felt that a popular game like Motorhead required a successor. Thanks to our long and extensive experience of racing games, and the technological advances represented by Playstation(R)2, we now have an opportunity to develop a game that fulfills our visions. IGN posted an interview with Hideo Kojima, talking about Metal Gear Solid 2.
A slice:

IGNPS2: Speaking of action, we noticed that some of the shooting sequences pop into a first-person perspective. Why'd you include this new viewpoint? Could you theoretically play the whole game from this view?

Hideo: You can't walk around in first-person, but you can shoot. The merits of first-person is that you can actually aim at specific points – like shooting cameras, keys, or a radio off an enemy's waist. I also get 3D sickness from games like Doom and Quake – that's why I don't want to move around the levels from that viewpoint! (laugh)

With this game, you want to be Solid Snake – but if you walk around in first-person all the time, you're not Snake, you're you. All you see is the enemy – you don't see yourself and the enemy. To increase the maximum thrill of infiltration and sneaking around, you want to be able to see it all. That's how you best get the feeling of distance between you and your foes.

MDK2: Armageddon will no doubt show many similarities with the Dreamcast version but graphics should be further improved, not to mention the blistering rate at which the gameplay runs. In addition to the added features, the overall game is being streamlined for precision control and gameplay.

Lucasarts interview - Comments (0)

Gamecenter posted an interview with Lucasarts, talking about upcoming SW games as Star Wars: Starfighter and Star Wars: Galaxies.
Here’s a bit:

GC: With the madness of the PS2 launch, not a lot is being said about your space sim Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set for release next year. What can you tell us about that?

S. J.: I think Starfighter is a real example of commitment to return to quality. Starfighter originally started life as a PC game, and when we saw what the PlayStation 2 was capable of, we decided to make a big investment to spend a lot longer building the game and to release it at the right time as part of that commitment to quality Star Wars products.

A lot of the gaming press are particularly excited about it, people are calling it one of the top five reasons to own a PlayStation 2, and some of the production values that have gone into building that game are just phenomenal. We are particularly excited about Starfighter in-house, because I think it will be seen as one of those landmark products for the company. It's technically advanced, it's got great gameplay, and it just looks amazing.

The lads over at DailyRadarUK scored an interview with Volition, talking about the first-person shooter game Red Faction.
A slice:

Q: Firstly, could you please tell us about the plot and background to Red Faction? How heavily plot-based is the game?

A: Red Faction's plot is a compelling story about a young miner named Parker, whom the player assumes the role of throughout the game. Frustrated by the wretched living conditions he and his fellow workers must endure on their Mars colony and by the mysterious affliction decimating their ranks, he spearheads a revolution against his employers, the Ultor Corporation. This tale of rebellion will put Parker in a number of exciting and action-packed battles all over Mars and beyond. Players who enjoy a good story will not be disappointed by Red Faction, as it features very strong character development and several plot twists that will keep them intent upon every aspect of the game, not just the fighting.

Wild Wild Racing review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:19 PM, EST
Gamespot posted a review of Rage Software’s Wild Wild Racing:

Since this is a fast-moving off-road racer, you'll spend a great deal of time sliding around on dirt, ice, or mud. The cars are fairly slide-friendly but in a more realistic way than, say, in Ridge Racer. So you'll actually have to take your thumb off the gas button from time to time to make some of the tighter turns. The game's control is quite loose, which makes the tighter turns a bit of a chore. Also, the cars have really bouncy suspension, so it's pretty easy to catch air or flip over after hitting even small bumps. The cars don't like to ram into obstacles.
