We smacked up a preview of the fps game, Unreal Tournament.
A slice:
Assault:
It's an attacking team against a defending team. Players must complete a number of objectives (simple ones) in order to win the match while the opposing team tries to keep them from completing their mission. This mode really rocks, it's a blast to play and adds great depth to the game as a whole.

FIFA review - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 2:07 PM, EDT
Gaming Age kicked up a review of EA’s soccer game.
Here’s a bit:
EA's typically watertight in-game controls are what really make this game shine. The players all respond well and likewise animate with a high degree of realism. At 60fps, it's fantastic to watch subtle animations like a player stuttering in his step as a ball is accidentally kicked into his back. Start pressing the shoulder buttons, and it'll produce some absolutely marvelous juggles and swerves to elude being tackled or intercepted. Some of the animations look wooden though - they all still jump with the stiffness and delicacy of a girly-man carrying fine China.

Halo interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:08 PM, EDT
Rampancy posted an interview with Jaime Griesemer of Bungie Software about their PC/PS2 game, Halo.
Here’s a bit:
Noctavis: That’s good to hear. Bot-matches just aren’t as satisfying as a fully developed story driven single player game. The trend in multi-player games definitely seems to be moving away from traditional Deathmatch. Can you elaborate on Jason Jones’ historic quote about Deathmatch?
Jaime: Well,. every game that involves achieving ends through simulated violence will always contain the basic elements of deathmatch. It’s just unavoidable. The evolution comes when developers create new situations and tactical elements that put deathmatch in a new context. The obvious way to do that is to add strategic goals like Capture the Flag, and while we are definitely doing that in Halo, we are also spending a lot of time adding depth and complexity to the tactical aspects of the game. In Halo, the immediate decisions you make and the tactics you use are just as important as your aim and your ability to dodge.

FIFA 2001 impressions - Comments (4)
Posted by @ 4:06 PM, EDT
IGN slapped up some impressions of EA’s latest soccer game.
Here’s a slice:
Once you're in the game, though, everything runs very smoothly. It goes without saying, I think, that this is the best-looking game of soccer ever made. The player models are sharp and extra-detailed, even very close up, and there aren't any of the jagged edges that have become such a common complaint. When the characters animate, elbows and knee joints show off very good "skinning" and articulation. They also sport a wide variety of very well-rendered faces, although for some reason everybody looks just a trifle Japanese, no matter which country they come from.

PSX2Unicom slapped up an interview with Konami about their Snowboarding title.
Here’s a bit of it:
P2U: How is the power of the PlayStation2 helping you in creating this game? Obviously courses will be much bigger and the graphics more detailed, but what else?
CH: It allows you to create much more realistic environments. Snow will fly up in the air when you jump, your jacket will blow in the wind, when you fall you'll get snow will accumulate on your clothes. Sometimes its the little things that truly make games great. PS2 technology allows you to add those small details that you may not notice at first, but will have you constantly shaking your head because everything will look and feel so incredilby realistic.

CVG: Sony has announced that it wants to lead the broadband revolution. What is Namco's policy about broadband, is Namco excited about this? In the same way that Namco has theme parks in the real world, is Namco considering creating an online community?
Akakura-san: We consider online business as one of the biggest things in the near future. So we are making internal research about online business, but our company doesn't announce things like the other companies do. We are really interested in making online games or an online business because we think that it is a new category in games. We also think that the existing platforms' games will remain as they are, but there will be online too. We treat them both very importantly. Someday we might make a surprise by announcing new things.

Players can device new strategies for taking out their enemies with such interactive environments. Like that steam....it may be hot and if you can get it too spray into the faces of your enemies it will hurt them. Even your bullets can ricochet off walls and still hit someone. If you ever wanted proof of the developers devotion to this game than here are a few interesting things. They have a military advisor, they study military situations, read books and watch videos everyday to make absolutely sure they are designing a true to life game. Heck, the team even visited a tanker to help them design a level in the game.

Metal Gear Solid 2 interview - Comments (9)
Posted by @ 6:04 PM, EDT
slapped up a big interview with Hideo Kojima about MGS2.
A slice:
CVG: The original MGS made groundbreaking use of the DualShock controller - it's one of the most talked-about aspects of the game. Now you have the DualShock 2, will you be making use of the sensitivity of the analogue buttons?
HK: [makes alternating quick pointing, then slow pointing gestures, then quick ducking and slow ducking movements] Depending on how fast you press the button you can crawl at your normal speed, or you can crawl quickly. And quick draw, you can do stuff like that with the analogue button. And [while aiming the gun] you have to go slowly, because if you let it go too quickly it will fire too violently.
CVG: How many different ways are there to dispatch enemies in MGS2?
HK: It's basically the same - there'll be the strangling, there'll be the punching and kicking, and there'll be weapons. This time, as you saw in the video, there will be a tranquilizer. One thing that's cool is that you can destroy a soldier's radio. If you do that he won't be able to call for other guards to come over. When you see an enemy, it's best to shoot at the radio first. If you make an enemy pass out, you need to drag him and hide him in a locker so the others won't see this fainted guy.

IGN kicked up some impressions of Oddworld Inhabitants Munch's Oddysee.
Here’s a bit:
The game is up and running, with perfectly designed levels, but with not much in them. Just like so many PlayStation2 games, the first thing that's noticeable is the size, depth and scope of every level. It's like somebody finally permitted developers to design high roofs on houses, and then stretched out the length of the sky. The indoor levels we saw were simply huge, and the outdoor level we witnessed was even bigger. By simply opening up the levels this game instantly seemed massive, immersive, and intriguing.

Oni impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:30 PM, EDT
Gaming Age slapped up some impressions of Bungie Software’s Oni.
Here’s a bit:
Most action games either like to concentrate on the hand-to-hand combat or distance combat with weapons. Oni, however, prefers to tackle both options. Depending on the situation, Konoko will have the chance to take out the opposition using a wide variety of punches, kicks and special techniques, as well as some heavy duty weaponry. Gamers will have to choose whether hand-to-hand or weapons will work better. It was noted that Oni will not feature an abundance of ammunition, so players who want to take the route of being trigger happy will have to face the harsh reality that it won’t be possible to do that in Oni.

Midnight Club’s main premise is about illegal street racing throughout some major city locations all across the world. And actually, the game is loosely based upon an actual illegal street racing organization, though there’s little known about them. Midnight Club’s tracks are not normal racing spots; instead the developers have decided to give the player free roaming abilities in a small amount of gigantic-sized cities. The sheer scope of the cities in Midnight Club are based on actual real-life locations, and the attention to detail that has been put into them is astonishing.

Developers "best pick of E3" - Comments (7)
Posted by @ 7:30 PM, EDT
Stomped asked a ton of developers which was their favorite game that they got to see at E3 and why?
A few answers:
Tom Hall-Ion Storm
Seeing the footage of Metal Gear Solid 2 ROCKED! It totally looked like cool cinematics...then they say it is 100% gameplay! If it's the same quality of gameplay as the first, but looks like that...it's gonna be the killer app for the PS2.
I also liked Square's stuff (I long for Chrono Cross), and wish I'd had more than 15 minutes out on the floor...but like all these people just haaaad to see Anachronox. :)

Onimusha - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 4:12 PM, EDT
Core slapped up some impressions and screens of Capcom’s Onimusha.
Here’s a slice of the article:
Judging by the few minutes we had, Onimusha plays a lot like Resident Evil in many ways though much faster moving, especially during battles when it more closely resembles a fighting game, making for a some great hybrid play. While the environments are rendering in lush 3D, the characters move over paths and are fairly constrained in movement. The controls are also similar as they are almost identical to games in the RE and DC series, making the control very easy to understand.

Posted by @ 4:10 PM, EDT
The kiddies over at Gamespot posted some impressions of GT2k.
Here’s a bit:
One of the nicest implementations in Gran Turismo are air-conditions. Gamers got the first peak of these air conditions when Polyphony made it so you can see the heat rising off the ground in the distance. Another air-condition that is being shown off at the E3 is mist. Developers have attempted to create a good mist in games before, but Kazunori's biggest problem with the attempts is that they are not very realistic. He stated that the implementation of air-conditions in Gran Turismo 2000 will be very realistic and will effect the handling on the cars realistically. He believes effects such as these will be vital in the next-generation of gaming.

The lads over at Gamespot UK posted some info on Free Radical’s fps game.
Here’s a bit of the article:
Talking with the game's designers, they explain that although the action can get as frantic as anything you've seen in Doom or Quake, the overall feel they are trying to achieve is that of a B-Movie. It's not surprising, then, that among the numerous different characters you'll find just about every movie stereotype imaginable. Zombies, skeletons, space rangers, robots, busty female cops... the list is endless, and every single one of the models is incredibly detailed and realistically animated while maintaining a level of humour.

Gran Turismo 2000 info
IGN posted a spicy article with info on GT2k.
Some of it:
Another aspect that will increase the depth to GT 2000's rally racing is assisted directly but the new power of the PS2. The PS2 enables Yamauchi to create better suspension in the cars and therefore more realistic rally racing. "GT2 didn't do as good a job as it could have [in regard to rally racing]," Yamauchi said. "In GT 2 you could set your suspension, but you can more accurately set the shocks better with the PS2 because we can do more intricate calculations. The same thing holds true for collision detection, Yamauchi, explained. Because the CPU power is increased, the collision detection calculations can be increased and therefore improved in all aspects of the game."

Metal Gear Solid2 inteview
IGN kicked up a fat interview with Hideo Kojima about MGS2.
Here’s a bit:
Dan: I wanted to comment that the movie that we've seen is astounding compared to any other console game today. Would you care to discuss the new, advanced visual effects being implemented in the game?
Kojima: We're not exactly going for "visuals," a higher level of visual graphics, because there's no way we can beat movies in that aspect. What I'm going for is the creation of a realistic virtual world, where you can feel heat, moisture, the air, and to do that what we do is have rain, we have steam, we have breath, we have blurs, so we use our graphic skills there, to make the player feel all these things. Like, for example, shadows. A shadow is expressed not only as a visual enhancement, but the enemies will actually spot Solid Snake's shadow, so not only is it visual stuff, it plays a great role in the game itself.

A new day, new E3 news:
Madden NFL 2001 impressions
IGN gives some impressions:
Other noteworthy observations included seeing players on the sideline wearing different numbered jerseys, Gatorade kegs, misting air-fans, and even head coaches! EA says that they have successfully motion captured all the coach's faces and will add them to the their physical attribute tables. This will tie directly into the new audio commentary in which the player will hear that actual coaches voices yelling for the time out (upon calling one chuckleheads) and other comments.

Graphically speaking, the demo looked extremely impressive. One new beach section sported gorgeous trackside detail including palm trees ala Ridge Racer V. IGN also kicked up some impressions on this game.
Here’s a bit:
GT2000 looks like it'll deliver the same great racing experience that GT2 did, with the added bonus of its tricked-out graphics. Little details on cars and backgrounds alike really stand out - shiny rims have depth and texture, you can read logos and license plates on your car's rear end, no matter how tiny the writing seems to be, and downtown buildings are presented with both towering proportion and eye-catching precision. Sony is positioning this as a major title for the PS2, probably their strongest first-party entry, and I doubt it will disappoint either them or us.

Dark Clound impressions
IGN posted some impressions of this RPG:
The game's system with talking to people had some striking similarities to Squaresoft's upcoming release for PlayStation, Vagrant Story. Just like in that game, the dialogue boxes pop-up from the character that's speaking and the text is in a comic book-like box. It's very cool and it makes it easier to tell who's speaking in the game. While obviously early, the game's English text seemed fairly well written for a game that's in such an early stage of development.

All the graphical wonder in the world wouldn't really make a game good if the gameplay wasn't up to snuff, so we're pleased to tell you that things are looking very good in this department. X-Squad impressions
Core posted some impressions on EA’s X-Squad.
Here’s a bit of the article:
Graphically, the game is rather dark and non-descriptive. While the horrendous monitor compounded the graphical inconsistencies, it's clear the game isn't altogether a graphical marvel to begin with. In terms of control, the demo was fairly basic, although there was a cache of weapons to choose from. The lighting seemed somewhat askew at times, making it hard to see upcoming enemies.

ESPN International Track & Field Impressions
A bit of IGN’s article:
One of the cool aspects of the game is the unique changes with the camera angles during the gameplay. The camera will move and change throughout the competitions, with some of them being quite cool looking. For instance, in the 100M freestyle swimming event, the camera will sometimes show the action from an underwater view. It's a very cool camera angle and since there's nothing to do here but mash buttons, the camera angle changes don't hamper the gameplay in any way.

NASCAR impressions
A slice of IGN’s article:
Despite being extremely early, NASCAR 2001 has some extremely sharp graphics, complete with detailed polygonal car models and some brilliant high-resolution textures on the vehicles. The advertisement logos that are on the cars are very detailed, easy to read and look pretty lifelike.
At the game's current stage, the damage model is pretty limited, but the developers are promising a very precise scheme. There will not only be texture damage on the cars, but actual detailed polygonal damage. The final product should also have three levels of the way the damage will affect the car from not at all to affecting it in a very realistic manner.

Red Faction on PS2
THQ announced today that it has partnered with Volition, creators of Descent and FreeSpace series, to bring the first-person shooter Red Faction to the PS2.
Here’s a bit of the press release:
"Red Faction" will introduce Volition's new Geomod technology, a true breakthrough that allows players to unleash weapons not only on opponents, but also on the very walls that constrain them, dramatically enhancing the realism and strategy of gameplay. "Red Faction" is scheduled for release for PlayStation 2 and PC in the first half of 2001
In "Red Faction," players will become immersed in a captivating story line and have the unprecedented ability to blast through environments, blowing holes in walls and making rubble of anything that gets in their way. Players will be further challenged by a sophisticated AI (artificial intelligence) that reacts to these changes in the environment, creating strategic elements as the action unfolds.

TONS of new info is out there and it will take some time to get it all covered.
So I’ll make many shorter updates instead of just one big one.
Here’s the first one:
About the US PS2’s DVD feature; DVD playback is built into the hardware as standard, without the use of a Memory Card. The features and functionality of the DVD player can also be enhanced in the future via firmware upgrade, simply by loading a new program from upgrade discs. This firmware upgrade feature also enables the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system to evolve into future digital consumer applications.
And another new feature for the US PS2; PlayStation 2 incorporates a bay for 3.5” hard disc drive and an expansion unit for interfacing with the network for future functionality upgrades.
There is also more than 50 titles scheduled for release by the end of 2000.

Metal Gear Solid 2 info/screens/movies/impressions
Some impressions from :
In the first MGS we were amazed to watch Solid Snake dodge searchlights on the ground. In MGS2 guards carry searchlights attached to their guns which pierce the darkness, to highlight the panic stricken face of their prey. When bullets shatter the glass of a window in MGS2, the glass first breaks into thousands of pieces before disintegrating to the floor. But this is only the beginning of what MGS2 can do with tens of thousands of tiny particles.
Heavy rain splatters off the heads and shoulders of soldiers, highlighted by spotlights from behind. When the camera tilts upward to follow the action, the same heavy rain falls onto the virtual lens. Such a neat touch. PlayStation 2 couldn't have a better ambassador than Metal Gear Solid 2, with its uncanny representation of a violent storm - sheets of rain against a backdrop of shifting clouds, washing over the intricacies of a military complex.
Some impressions from IGN:
The rest of the eight-minute long video preview was filled to the brim with some of the most amazing game footage that these eyes have yet seen. It's really hard to describe in words the grandness of what was on display here. The bottom line here is that based on what was shown, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will likely be one of the most cinematic experiences of our time -- in a videogame or on film. Everything from the camera work, to the music, the ambient background sounds, and the overall presentation just screamed big budget Hollywood movie. In fact, most Hollywood producers and directors probably could learn a thing or two from Mr. Kojima's work of art.
The game's graphics are simply the best we've ever seen on the system. Even though the game does have some aliasing, it's not really a problem and nobody in his or her right mind would dare complain about it. The characters all move and animate in an extremely lifelike matter and many of the game's action scenes look straight out of an action movie. What's more, the facial expressions of the character models and overall detail of the faces have no equal in the world of videogaming.

PS2 Ready 2 Rumble
Gamespot tested an early version of Ready 2 Rumble for the PS2 and slapped up some impressions on it.
Here’s a slice of their article:
Midway is also working on a new rumble system, with multiple levels of the rumble meter - letting you save up and unleash more powerful assaults.

Some of it:
IGNPS2: Do you mean that there will be more characters on the screen at the same time, or that there will be more characters in general fighting?
Amy: There will be more variety, so its not just all vampires, and there will be more on screen, and there will be more frequent interactions than in the first game. And also we're going to make sure that we kind of plan out some of the enemy interactions, the enemy setups, kind of more up front so that we have more force interactions, not as simple as something like a Zelda example, but the idea that you can't get past this room until you defeat the enemies who are the guardians, and they are the lock for the door that you have to get through. We'll do more of that.

If the game was an ordinary racer, it would never be popular. More than anything, I'm a fan of airplanes, so I wanted to base the game on that.

Gameslice kicked up an interview with EA about their PC/PS2 Bond game.
Some of it:
GameSlice: As a rule, movie licenses don't work in the gaming industry. But Goldeneye is one of the best examples of an exception to that rule. What makes you think that you are going to be able to strike gold again with another Bond game? What do you think Goldeneye did right that you want to duplicate with The World Is Not Enough?
Jon: Our goal is to capture the essence of Bond – the exotic locations, the sexy women and the fantastic gadgets and weaponry. The challenge is to do so in a way that is entertaining to a game audience, not just a film audience. We’ve been careful to focus much of our attention on the second-to-second and minute-to-minute game play. Detailed, attentive focus on core aspects of game play combined with the unique elements of 007’s world should yield an entertaining experience.
In terms of the license, MGM and Danjaq’s James Bond franchise is one of the most highly coveted and successful licenses across all forms of entertainment. With 19 blockbuster films that span over 40 years, I’d say we have an established property (and game) that will match, if not exceed, past Bond-licensed games.

The character you play as (Mark) is trying to break free from the crime scene and clean up his act but finds himself reverting back to his old instincts and is willing to do whatever it takes to get back his son.

Posted by @ 7:33 AM, EDT
More EA games…
Here’s a bit of the pressrelease:
Electronic Arts announces that it will be bringing its popular SimTheme Park franchise to the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system. Using the power of the PlayStation 2 console, SimTheme Park takes a massive stride forward with high-resolution graphics that will truly bring the theme parks gamers create to life. SimTheme Park will take advantage of the more sophisticated technological capabilities of Sony's new console system and allow players to build (and ride) bloodcurdling five-loop roller coasters in the most realistic way. Players will still be able to control every aspect of the parks they build, from the rides, to how much salt gets put on the French fries at the concession stand to chucking out troublemakers. But with the increased processing power and memory of the PlayStation 2, a larger number of customers will be able to visit the theme parks players create, each with their own individual personalities - complete with likes and dislikes.

World Soccer 2000 impressions - Comments (1)

GameSpotUK has play tested an early version of Konami's World Soccer 2000.
Here’s a bit of the article:
Skipping past menu screens offering everything from league, cup and Olympic competitions to scenario levels and a training pitch, the first thing you'll notice upon entering a match are those glorious PS2 visuals. Players perform a wide selection of moves, drawing attention to their seamless animation as they do so. The stadiums themselves, including the crowd and pitch, are not yet up to the high standard set by FIFA Soccer World Championship but it's early days for the Konami team and they are unlikely to settle for anything less than perfection.

Posted by @ 4:43 PM, EDT
Acclaim today announced development of two new games for the PS2. The games, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming and "Big Wave Surfing" (working title) are due to be released in early 2001.
Acclaim previously announced development of All-Star Baseball 2002 as well a new games based on the Ferrari Formula 1 and 360 Challenge series on the PS2.
A slice of the pressrelease:
"This is a very exciting time for the video game industry - with new console systems poised to hit the market this fall - fueling a true renaissance in software development," said Greg Fischbach, co-chairman and CEO of Acclaim Entertainment. "Acclaim is dedicated to developing quality games that help push the envelope and propel our future growth."
Shadow Man: 2econd Coming
The sequel to 1999's premier horror game Shadow Man, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming follows Mike LeRoi/the Shadow Man into another adventure battling evils in this world and the world of the dead - Deadside. In this second chapter of the Shadow Man story, our hero finds himself going up against the Grigori - a group of demons who have been masquerading as humans for the past 2000 years and who are now attempting to bring back their evil leader Asmodeus from the Pit to bring about the end of the world as prophesied in the Book of Revelation.
"Big Wave Surfing"
Acclaim is also developing a new surfing game for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, tentatively titled Big Wave Surfing, to be released in Spring 2001. The game will make big-wave riding and professional surf competition accessible and thrilling to anyone in the world with any level of game-playing experience. In addition, "Big Wave Surfing" will capture the speed, intensity and thrill of surfing while staying true to the purity of the sport. Acclaim has signed an exclusive deal with surfing champion Sunny Garcia to appear in the game, and will secure similar deals with other surfers in the near future. "Big Wave Surfing" is being developed by Osiris Studios.

Munch's Oddysee Interview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 4:41 PM, EDT
IGNPC kicked up an interview with Oddworld Inhabitant's co-founder Lorne Landing about the PC/PS2 game Munch's Oddysee.
Some of it:
IGNPC: You've mentioned that the Oddworld presented in Munch's Oddysee will be place that gamers will want to stay long after they've finished the game. What sort of things are you introducing to get gamers to have an extended vacation in your world?
Lorne Lanning: Land will be fertile if it hasn't been polluted and if the rains are still coming. But if the land has been raped and is barren of water or trees, then the life forms that live on the land will come into hard times, reproduce less often, etc. It's critical to us that the gamer has responsibility over the landscape. The gamer's actions, or lack of actions, will influence the state of the landscape and, as a result, influence the availability of resources and the behavior of the lands' inhabitants.
We will also be cycling between day and night. For the world's creatures some live by day, others by night. A factory is in full production during the day, and tends to wind down at night. Nocturnal creatures come out to hunt at night, but sleep in caves during the day. You'll have the ability to wait out circumstances and decide that it would be wiser to attempt infiltration of a factory at night, rather than daylight. Strategies abound when you have a playing field that behaves this way.

Sky Surfer Review - Comments (5)
Posted by @ 4:21 PM, EDT
A new review is up, this time Sky Surfer eats the dust.
Some of it:
Some reviews are long and detailed, some are short and concise. This one is longer than it should be, there's not much to say about this game. It's polished enough for you to recognize that its PS2, but only just, which in my mind is sufficient comment to try and dissuade you from buying it. Enter the first, and hopefully one of the few, real flops of this glorious new machine.

Onimusha interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:16 PM, EDT
Core kicked up an interview with Capcom about their game Onimusha.
Here’s a bit:
Question: Very interesting, can you give us an example of how the music will progress?
Samuragochi-san: For example; imagine you just beat a boss, the music would make you feel confident and relieved. If you moved into another room and the music was dark and horror-style, players wouldn't enjoy it. In Onimusha there's no gaps between the story and the music like that.
Inafune-san: Biohazard is the kind of game where players know there are zombies waiting to surprise them. In Onimusha you're a Samurai, so we want players to feel invincible, like saying 'I can kill you all!' We're planning to add many action elements to the game, including tricks to open doors with your sword ready for attack. I think these are the main differences between transferring development from the PlayStation to the PlayStation2.
