Unison Review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:18 PM, EDT
We added a review of Tecmo’s dancing game Unison.
Here’s a bit:

Unison requires you to memorize increasingly difficult sequences of analog stick movement, then repeat them again with no visual assistance at all. It becomes a test of memory, rhythm and co-ordination. The game follows a basic formula: view the dance routine in its entirety or in portions, practice the moves, attempt the routine and get a grade of C or higher, move onto the broadcast mode and perform the routine again, if successful move onto the next routine. While you watch the initial routine, the onscreen icons show you how you should be manipulating and memorizing the analog movements. Following these movements with the analog sticks actually makes sense and lends to the action on the screen. It is at this point you have to have some idea of rhythm in order to get into a groove and master each routine.

GameShark 2 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:49 PM, EDT
We added a review of InterAct’s PS2 cheat device, GameShark 2:

In its latest outing, InterAct has released what it simply calls Gameshark 2 for the Playstation 2 console. For those who have used previous incarnations of Gameshark on the original Playstation, Gameshark 2 will appear slightly different in design but essentially the same in terms of functionality. Due to the lack of an expansion port on the Playstation 2, InterAct had to think of a different approach in order for the Gameshark 2 to work. Using the same concept they used for the Gameshark for the Sega Dreamcast, Gameshark 2 consists of a memory card and a pre-load CD. Simply insert the Gameshark memory card into slot one of your PS2 and insert the Gameshark CD into your PS2 drive. The system quickly loads and it brings you to a main menu. Moving around the menus are made easy thanks to a completely menu-driven interface.

New Game Uncovered: Splashdown - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:19 PM, EDT
Rainbow Studio's has uncovered a new "personal watercraft" game that looks promising, with a MPG to boot, IGN has the scoop:

"Rainbow Studios may soon hold the world record as far as extreme-sports games are concerned. They tackled motocross on the PC, creating what many consider to be the best game around in the genre, and now have no less than three such games lined up on PS2 -- ATV Offroad Fury already speaks to their skill with the system, Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 lies well off in the distance, and now Splashdown is ready to hit the system within this year. A...uhm..."personal watercraft" racer, Splashdown takes some of what made ATV such an excellent game and throws in the entirely new dimension of racing on the water."

Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing Review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:42 AM, EDT
G VG has released a review of this kart racer, and it doesn't receive a great score:

"The popularity of the Star Wars franchise has helped LucasArts create a broad range of marketable products, from toys and clothing to numerous video game releases. The latest genre in the gaming world to receive the Star Wars treatment is kart racing, in the form of Star Wars Super Bombad Racing. Considering that virtually every major property, including the Looney Tunes and Disney characters, has appeared in kart-racing games, it's surprising that it took this long to see a Star Wars-licensed game in the genre. Lucas Learning's Super Bombad Racing has uniquely designed and often difficult levels and an appealing cast of Star Wars characters. But several flaws, including loose controls and repetitive gameplay, keep it from being a truly enjoyable kart racer."

The Getaway Skips E3? - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:13 AM, EDT
C & VG reports that Sony isn't quite ready to show off it's London crime game yet:

"It hasn’t been decided yet, but it’s looking fairly certain that it won’t be shown as a playable game," an SCEE spokesperson told CVG today. "It’ll probably shown in some kind of video form. They [Studio Soho] don’t want to be caught in the trap of showing it too early. Obviously there’s a tremendous amount of hype surrounding The Getaway at the moment and we don’t want to be forced to show code that might not be reflective of the final version. They would sooner continue working on it and show it at a time when they feel comfortable showing it, not when E3 dictates."

Another what? A racing game. Lots of details have uncovered and here are some of them.
"The final version of the game will offer up 70 official cars of Le Mans 24 Hour race. That's 30 more than was seen in the Dreamcast version for those counting. The cars are in three broad classes: GT (22 cars) and Prototypes (48 cars). Before you say that's only two, the prototype class is divided in to two categories: open (LMP) and closed (LMGTP) prototypes."Full story

The new game is said to contain a more cohesive plot, and will not just be about speed. The original took place on the US-Canadian and US-Mexican borders, but the new game will involve two new locations, Afghanistan and Vietnam, which the developer hopes will be more interesting settings. As before, you can drive to any place you can see, and the territories will each be varied and expansive."

Quake III Revolution review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:48 PM, EDT
We added a review of the PS2 version of id’s first person shooter, Quake III Revolution.
Here’s a bit:

In the ladder matches you'll have to fight your way to the top in various types of matches including deathmatch, kills vs. time, possession, one flag CTF, elimination and skirmish. At the end of each tier you fight in elimination where you have a limited number of lives to defeat all of the opponents before moving on. The skirmish mode is the same as elimination only you are transported to different arenas throughout the battle. All of the arenas from the PC version are in Revolution including the ones from Team Arena plus even a few that were specifically designed for the PS2 version. Unlike Unreal Tournament's realistic "real-world" style environments, Revolution's arenas are just that, arenas. They are specifically designed for fast and furious shoot'em up action and there is definitely a lot of it.

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy impressions - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 5:47 PM, EDT
The lads over at Gamespot UK posted first impressions of the PS2 version of the arcade classic Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
Here’s a slice:

At the beginning of the game you have eight character types to choose from, each possessing the usual array of strengths or weaknesses. The Warrior, for example, will be very strong physically but will have weak magic, the opposite of the Sorceress or Wizard. Additionally, each character type has four incarnations, allowing you to select the appearance of your chosen one, and later in the game we are told there will be an additional eight playable characters. Once you have chosen and named your representative, you then begin your quest.

Your mission is to gather the Runestones that were used to banish the evil demon Skorne, villain of the Dreamcast title Gauntlet Legend. The magical stones were stolen by the mage Garm, who used them to set Skorne free. Skorne and his creatures are now on the loose, and it is your character's job to find the stones and banish him once again. The game is set across eight different realms, each with its own powerful guardian that your character must defeat.

Posted by @ 7:52 PM, EDT
Maybe this one will have a bit of depth to it...something that hasn't been achieved yet with the series. Here's some info:

Apparently the arcade game will be released next year and will use a completely new engine. The only certain character is Scorpion, but the chances of him being joined by Sub-Zero seem likely. Characters will show wear and tear as a the fight progresses, and the game will introduce new story lines, as well as continuing some of the classic stories. The game won't be playable at E3, according to Boon, but images are should arrive in the next few months.

First Final Fantasy X Direct Feed Video - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:23 PM, EDT
IGn posted a brand-new direct-feed video of the upcoming Final Fantasy game. It's looking pretty awesome. The video is a bit large...21 Megs to be exact. Most of it is movie sequences, but the parts that have gameplay footage in it are amazing! If you don't have broadband it could take a while for the download.

The video mixes CG with realtime footage, and although Square's CG artists have shown once again that they're masters at what they do, the folks behind the real time stuff are catching up (thanks in part to the new system powering their game). You'll find a few cinematic sequences, both pre-rendered and real time, along with battle sequences showcasing a variety of effects and beasts. If you look closely, you can see a few sections where the game transitions instantly between real time and CG.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica Full Import Review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:07 PM, EDT
DR has got thier hands on the full japanese version of this awesome survival horror title, looks like the second generation is arriving:

"While the cynics among us may point out that this is exactly what's been happening in these games ever since the series started, Veronica still retains the engaging gameplay and downright shock value that makes Resi the phenomenon it is. Except this time it's got some serious processing power behind it and the result is breathtaking. Yes, it sticks to the well-established formula (i.e. blast everything in sight and solve puzzles), but who can blame Capcom for not attempting to mess with something that works so well? Far larger than any previous incarnation, with an engrossing, sinister plot, weighing in at around 16 hours and taking us from the Prison Island, through the Ashford family mansion and on to Antarctica, it's a coronary-inducing fright-fest all the way to the gruesome conclusion. Nobody makes survival horror like Capcom and Veronica rams this point home beyond any doubt."

I put in Onimusha, Zone of the Enders and was really blown away by the tantalizing Metal Gear Solid 2 demo. The 8200s definitely bring your PS2 playing to an all new level and environment. Even regular CDs sounded quite impressive. I cannot wait to try out MTV's Sound Generator and Ubi Soft's project with U.K. recording giant Ministry of Sound.

We also posted a review of Square’s fighter, The Bouncer:

The first time the game is played through, it is quite impressive. But as you play through it for the 2nd and 3rd time, you begin to see just how annoying and odd it is to have to continually pause and skip cut-scenes that you've already seen. The fighting system overall is lacking and slow. Fighting sequences are scarce and often far too short and what makes things worse is that you have to share the space with your teammates!

Bandai confirmes the release of 2 Gundamn titles for the U.S. - Comments (0)

Looks like the U.S. will be recieving 2 more anime titles this year, IGN has the story:

"Both games are set in the One Year War period of the Universal Century continuity, as depicted in the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. Journey to Jaburo in fact closely re-creates the progression of the TV show, with Armored Core-style missions in the RX-78 Gundam patterned after TV episodes and bookended by a great many FMV excerpts (some re-animated for the game). There is also a lengthy versus mode where you can pilot both Earth Federation and Zeon mechs, with unlockable FMV sequences from all over the UC continuity (including a bizarre ending with every female lead from MS Gundam through Char's Counterratack; very jarring)."

C&VG says that MGS2, the most awaited title for the PS2 will hit U.S. shores before it's released in japan:

"The reasons for Metal Gear 2 hitting America first are pretty logical, according to insiders. Although Metal Gear Solid on PSone sold a million copies in Japan, it’s performance in America and Europe was far better. The first showing of Metal Gear 2 was at US game show E3 in appreciation of this fact. Kojima has previously hinted that the US and European markets are more receptive to action titles than Japan, which is still fixated on role-playing and strategy games."

Posted by @ 6:47 PM, EDT
We added a review of EA’s golf game.
A slice:

In the gameplay department, 2001 birdies some holes, and bogies a few others. It is most successful in the amount of different play modes that it offers. A Play Now feature allows those who can’t spare the extra 30 seconds to go through the menus, a way to jump right into a match. This isn’t your typical Play Now option however, this one places you in a series of challenges, twenty-one in all. It’s a nice addition, and a good way to kill a few minutes when you don’t have enough time to play an entire tournament. Skins, Match, Stroke, Practice, and Tourney round out the rest of the play modes. The robust number of play modes ensure that it’s easy to tailor a match to your exact specifications.
