ESPN International Track & Field preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 10:21 AM, EDT
Gamefan posted a preview of Konami’s PS2 Track&Field game along with some new screens.
Here’s a bit:

International Track & Field features the endorsement of "The 100 Meter Man" Maurice Greene and three-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon, and will allow gamers to compete in over twelve different competitions. The classic events, such as the 100 meter dash, hurdles and long jump, are in here by default, but Konami decided to try including a few new events - most notably, rhythmic gymnastics. Why in Odin's left eye anyone would want to see video rhythmic gymnastics is open to conjecture, but the gameplay in this event is just like Dance Dance Revolution's timed button-pressing; this event was probably included with the female gamer in mind.

PS2 sales in Japan - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:25 PM, EDT
The current PS2 hardware and software sales in Japan (from Reuters):

Sony said it had shipped 2.54 million consoles by the end of June, which compares with an original target of 2.5 million by mid-July.
Sony aims to ship four million consoles in Japan and three million each in Europe and the United States during the business year that began on April 1.
It also said its shipments of PlayStation2 software by end-June totalled 4.6 million units.

750 PS2 titles in the next two years - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:23 PM, EDT
According to more than 750 games will be released for the PS2 in the next two years.
Here’s a slice of the article:

Around a quarter of those games will arrive from gaming behemoth EA, illustrating the company's commitment to the console. Spending over 350 million developing for PlayStation 2 is obviously the tip of the iceberg for the publisher. News that Konami has already spent a similar amount creating games for PS2 is indication of how much the biggest and brightest in the industry stand to lose if the ensuing console war proves too bloody for Sony.

Interactive Matrix shown on GScube - Comments (10)
Posted by @ 3:21 PM, EDT
Remember about the “GScube” thing I posted about a few days ago?
Today reports from SIGGRAPH in Tokyo:

Now get a load of this. "Eon showed a concept preview of The Matrix. It was from the scene at the beginning of the movie, the hotel ambush. What we got was a city-top view of an animated figure running and jumping across rooftops, but you couldn't distinguish from the actual film. It was in real-time. It had an interactive camera and they were moving it around."

How all of this will become possible is unclear. But rest assured that you'll be playing movies in some way, shape or form in the next five years. Just ask Ken Kutaragi. "You can communicate to a new cyber-city," he said in an interview with Newsweek earlier this year. "This will be the ideal home server. Did you see the movie 'The Matrix'? Same interface. Same concept. Starting from next year, you can jack into 'The Matrix'." No-one knew just how right he was...

Star Wars RPG - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 3:16 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted some info on the recently announced SW RPG.
Here’s a bit:

Set about four thousand years before Star Wars: Episode I, the game's story will focus on the ancient struggles between the Jedi and the evil Sith. Fans of the Dark Horse Sith series of comics will note that this period in Star Wars history has already been richly developed by the comic books. However, this game will have an entirely new story that currently does not involve any of the characters from the comic books. In this period, the Jedi Knights form a huge and far-reaching order that protects a multitude of planets in a vast republic, as well as unaffiliated, outlying systems.

Dynasty Warriors 2 impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:09 PM, EDT
IGN posted some new impressions of Koei’s action-wargame
A slice:

We are talking, of course, about Dynasty Warriors 2, which we've had another chance to play now, with a version substantially improved from the one we saw at E3. The background graphics may have taken a little bit of a hit, but the framerate now has none of the problems we saw at the show, and the game is just as furious as we'd hoped. As we'd also expected, though, DW2 is a beat-'em-up with a difference. There's just a touch of method to all the madness, which adds enough depth to offset some occasionally dull stretches in the action.

A bit of it:

Today, we were given the opportunity to check out the latest revision of the game and we must say that things are shaping up nicely. Graphically, the game is looking pretty impressive, with large 3D "go-anywhere" environments and a framerate that's currently around 30 Hz. While there is some slowdown when several vehicles are on the screen at once, during which the framerate typically falls to around the 20 Hz range, the developers are still hoping to achieve a steady 60 Hz for the game's release version.

TimeSplitters Hands-On preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:42 PM, EDT
IGN smacked up some impressions of Free Radical Desing’s PS2 FPS.
A bit:

In the early level I played, level six, enemies threw grenades and dynamite at me, and pummeled me with gunfire from the rafters above. On several occasions I was overwhelmed by huge waves of baddies. In another level, the enemies showed surprisingly good AI. They ducked and hid, ran up stairs after me, and didn’t stand around waiting to be shot; they took cover and appeared to have planned their attacks. Several times, enemies I didn’t see or hear crept up from behind me and took me out in a second with a headshot. Humiliating as it was, that’s just the kind of smart AI I love to play against.

Just to demonstrate the engine's power, David Doak (Remember Dr. Doak in the second level of Goldneye? That’s him.) created a map using the editor in about five minutes and then we all got to play. He used the editor to create spawning points for characters, weapon spawning points, chose five different kinds of weapons from a total of 24, and picked a texture theme, which instantly textured the whole level, and then in seconds it was done, and were cursing at each other like madmen. What a frickin' riot! It was like playing Quake III in four-player split-screen – total rapid-fire mayhem! They had to cordially tell us to stop playing so that they could get back to work.

Madden 2001 interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:54 PM, EDT
MaddenMania posted an interview with Scott Bandy about the PC version of Madden 2001.
Here’s a bit:

Will there be any major difference between the PC and the Playstation 2 format besides the online play?

SB: The Playstation 2 is an incredibally powerful gaming platform. With the cutting edge technology available to PSX2 developers, combined with the fact that they can devote all of the resources on the platform to game performance, users will see a level of realism and graphic detail that were previously only dreamed of.

Having said that, we are very pleased with the way that the PC version of 2001 is shaping up from a graphical perspective as well. We are incorporating the same base player model as that used in the PSX2 version, and I believe that PC users will be very happy with the quality of the graphics. Add to that the most complete On-line football gaming experience ever offered, a completely redesigned, mouse friendly interface, and re-vamped player and CPU AI, and I feel that Madden PC 2001 will also offer a great football gaming experience.

Sony Clarify PlayStation2 Pre-Order System - Comments (14)
Posted by @ 11:03 AM, EDT
Gamespot UK posted an article about the UK PS2 preorder system.
Here’s a bit:

Limited numbers of pre-order forms will be allocated to retailers for use when the scheme goes live on September 7th. Sony Computer Entertainment UK (SCE UK) are matching the number of forms to the number of machines they expect to receive in the country from Sony of Japan before Christmas.

The measure has been introduced, say SCE UK, to kill the possibility of retailers taking more orders than can be fulfilled in the key Xmas period. The aim of the scheme is to prevent the queues, lotteries and panicked fights that characterised the Japanese PlayStation2 launch in March. Through this limited-allocation method SCE UK say they can "guarantee" that everyone who places an order will receive their machines before Christmas.

Here’s a bit:

Sony Electronics is planning to launch a branded Internet access service by this fall and is inking a series of partnerships aimed at providing more online links for its products, the company said today.

Sony will launch a branded Internet service provider within the next few months, Ashcroft added, but he would not offer further details.

"In the future, we expect to have all of our devices connected to the Internet" with enhanced network features such as diagnostics, he said. "We need to make available connectivity and content" as that becomes a technical reality.

The company has publicly discussed coupling gaming machine PlayStation 2 and its line of personal computers with Internet service. Sony has also flirted with the idea of developing broadband networks. Details, however, have been few.

Primal Image review - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 11:11 AM, EDT
We posted a review of this awesome game.
Here’s a bit:

The models do their own thing seemingly unaware that a camera is flying around their face. Maybe this computer-controlled camera would not be that bad, except that at any given point all three angles could be from the top of the ceiling as your model lies face first on the ground. You get almost no points for anything that is not a close up of the face, so that begins to be quite a problem.

DailyRadar posted their impressions on EA’s Madden game.
A slice:

At this week's sports camp, EA officially revealed the long-anticipated star sports game of the PS2 launch, Madden NFL 2001, and Sony Radar was amazed. Early screens and movies didn't do justice to this amazingly gorgeous football game. As players take the field, it is possible to see incredible details in the various models. Facemask, tape, elbow pads, visors and wristbands all differentiate players and correlate to the equipment each one actually wears in the NFL. The coaches, remaining on the sidelines, are no less impressive. Each one paces the sidelines, shouting orders and generally stressing out.

Gamefan posted a review of Sony’s PS2 music/video game.
A bit:

So what if Sony doesn’t exactly have a large collection of AAA titles to call its own - TVDJ was going to be different…at least that’s what I kept telling myself until I finally put the disc into the office’s PS2 yesterday. And while its ultra-cute graphics and niche gameplay may have been right up my alley, its poor execution, length and replay value (or lack thereof) make TVDJ perhaps the most disappointing PS2 game to date.

Gamespot smacked up some impressions of EA’s snowboard game, SSX.
A slice:

Big SSX looks incredible. The graphics are clean, detailed, and colorful. The visuals themselves actually remind me a lot of TrickStyle, except that they're a lot nicer looking. The sound is one of the coolest aspects of the game. The track has several musical components that fade in and out depending on how you're doing. So you could be plowing along in third place listening to drums and a bassline, and then when you make your move to take second, a wailing guitar jumps into the song. The music really goads you along, which makes the racing more intense.

A bit of it:

The physics model is pretty solid, making some of the collisions simply mind boggling. Some of my favorite moments during the demo were the spinouts. Just like in real racing, if you tap the rear quarter panel of a car ahead of you, chances are you'll get it to spin out. Sometimes it flies right out of your way, and sometimes it takes you with it, and you both get locked into a spin. It's pretty awesome to see two cars spinning around on the track, tires shredding, debris flying, and smoke everywhere - like some sort of twisted dance.

Here’s a slice:

Gamers.com (Rik): What about Sony licensing out the PS2 technology? There’s been talk about the embedded market, can you give an example of an embedded product, or the graphics workstation, and are you trying to compete with SGI or Sun workstations?

Phil Harrison: Well, let’s talk about these one at a time because they’re slightly different businesses. PlayStation 2 technology is designed by Sony in conjunction with Toshiba. Sony Computer Entertainment designed the graphics chip, the graphics synthesizer, in conjunction with another lab within Sony. We have invested to date about two and a half billion dollars in our own chip fabrication facilities in Japan, one in Ooita, two in Nagasaki now. These are facilities that are cranking out the chips to put into the machines for the Japanese products, and as you probably know, the Japanese sales are just through the roof. It’s always out of stock. We’re up to about 2.4 million machines sold through now, and you can’t find one anywhere. Soon as we ship some new ones into the market, voom, it goes straight out again, so there’s obviously pent-up demand in the Japanese market. We got the impending launch of the U.S. and the European product, and we’ve announced that we’re doing 10 million PlayStation 2s between now and the end of our fiscal year in March of 2001. That’s a huge amount of production, but what we’ve put in place with this new investment (we’ve recently announced 1.2 billion dollars in investment into new chip plants) is to make sure we have the capacity to chase the demand for PlayStation 2 around the world and all the way up. We think it’s going to be a tremendously successful product and we have great confidence in the success of the product. That introduces the possibility in the future of licensing out the technology and selling chips to be embedded in other devices.

The lads over at Gamespot UK smacked up an interview with Free Radical Design.
Here’s a bit:

GameSpot UK: Tell us about the multiplayer.

David Doak: With Time Splitters we want to make sure that the game has as much replay value as possible - we see the multiplayer game as an essential part of this. From the beginning of development we have been supporting two to four-way split screen and we are making sure that it always runs as smoothly as possible. We will be adding as much variety and as many customisable options as possible into the multiplayer. The intention is to make a game which people are still enjoying long after they have worked through the single-player levels.

GameSpot UK: So why is game going to be better than Goldeneye?

David Doak: Better speed, better graphics, huge range of characters and the multiplayer replay value.

IGN posted an interview with Core's team leader Gavin Rummary.
A slice:

IGNPS2: In terms of gameplay are you going all out action or more think your way round the missions? What sort of competition is there for your market?

Gavin: The game has puzzles and action -- it’s not just a FPS where you just run around killing enemies till you reach the end of the level, you have to figure out a lot of things using the team’s abilities and gadgets. I guess we’re up against all the action-adventure games that are coming up but I think we have enough original and different elements to make our game stand out.

Final Fantasy IX impressions - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 9:04 AM, EDT
The GIA smacked up some impressions of Square’s latest FF game for the PSX.
Here’s a bit:

The presentation of Final Fantasy IX upholds the high standards set by previous Square titles. The game begins with an understated yet stunning FMV establishing the world of Final Fantasy IX. We fade from area to area on a cloth map, intercut with scenes of grandeur and beauty. Many-propellered airships and floating theaters do a good job of setting the mood. The detail with which Square has realized their world of fantasy is immaculate.

After a few more minutes of stunning cinematics, we get control of Zidane. Zidane and his crew is being hired out by Prefect Cid to abduct the Princess Garnet. Garnet's mother, the incredibly ugly Queen Brahne, has been on a miltaristic streak against neighboring territories. After playing as Zidane briefly, the player takes control of Vivi. Vivi is trying to get into a play, but his ticket turns out to be a fake. After a little espionage and some help from a street rat named Jack, Vivi's in and watching the play. Zidane and gang enter the play, only to leave mid-scene to try to kidnap Princess Garnet. At this point, the player takes control of Steiner, Garnet's bodyguard, and sets out in search of the Princess...

A slice:

Oni stars Konoko, a police officer for the Tech Crimes Task Force, the branch of the police in charge of bringing high-tech criminals to justice. Oni primarily means "devil" in Japanese, but the word has other meanings, including mischief, curse, and torment. Bearing this in mind, Konoko's past plays a big role in the overall plot of the game. While tracking down technologically enhanced master criminals and doling out futuristic white-knuckle justice, you'll come face to face with the kinds of traumatic events that could unnerve a hardened techno cop.

Silent Scope Preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:32 PM, EDT
Check out the arcade port of Silent Scope to the PS2:

There is something about sniping people that is uncannily enjoyable. Maybe it’s the tension and precision of aiming or the fact that the victim could be staring right at you and not have a chance. Whatever the case, sniper games are just a lot of fun. It’s probably the most rewarding feeling of getting a kill of any other weapon. What better game for Konami to port over to PS2 than the great arcade game Silent Scope?

TVDJ review - Comments (0)

IGN also posted an import review of Sony’s music game, TVDJ.
A slice:

The bottom line? TVDJ has some of the slickest animation production values I've ever seen in a game, and is packed with great character designs, hysterical cutscenes, and lots and lots of the "snot bubble" humor that the Japanese find completely hysterical. Unfortunately, the game is simply over before it even begins, and the replay value is close to nil.

Volition "explains" - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 2:20 PM, EDT
Some interesting questions about the PS2's capabilities has been posted in Volition’s forum (the developers of the PS2 RPG Summoner)
Here’s some stuff from the threads:

Question: What I like to know is, is storing texture in system RAM possible on PS2? It's quite easily done on the PC using AGP except that it's so slow that it's not pratical at all(according to my test results, anyway).
However, with the huge bandwidth of the PS2, will there be any problem with this? I think this will be good especially for storing sprites for 2D games at least.
Can the gurus at volition enlighten me??

Answer: The PSX2's architecture doesn't work like that. However, the massive bus speed is more than enough to overcome the relatively small amount of vram. In other words, transferring textures to VRAM with a decent caching scheme works extremely well.

General texture cache schemes are a pretty well-solved problem. Pretty much any modern 3d game in the last several years has its own twist on it.
Why people are complaining about small vram? Well, my guess would be that you've got this massively powerful graphics synthesizer and all kinds of cool doodads, but you're saddled with a vram size that's more like a 2nd generation PC card. It would be nice to not have to deal with texture caching

Still, there's a lot of the "Sony philosophy" behind the PSX2 architecture which isn't really apparent until you've really pounded on the thing for awhile and started to understand.

Posted by @ 3:00 PM, EDT
Core posted an interview with SCE production director Kanetaka Katsushi about his PS2 game Fantavision.
A bit:

Question: Do you feel pressure to recreate the novelty in Fanatavision for your next project?

Katsushi-san: Novelty can be good, but I want to create games which appeal to everyone. I think we've achieved this, at least partially, with Fantavision. For example; if the game makes your grandmother peak over your shoulder and say 'Wow, Computers are Amazing,' that's great because it caught her attention. After all, we're in the business of creating games which keep players hooked.
