Remember the story we posted yesterday about Atlus planning 5 to 6 games for the PS2?
There was a press release about one of the games that I missed:
"MathEngine PLC, the leader in natural behavior software -- software which allows complex, physics-based interactive simulation -- today announced it has joined in a technology and software licensing agreement with Atlus Co., Ltd. of Japan, which will use MathEngine's "virtual human" biomechanics technology and engineering support for the development of their new Sony PlayStation(R)2 game.
Atlus will use MathEngine's real-time constraint-solving technology from their dynamic Interactive Virtual Human technology to create realistic 3D environments for the game, which is still veiled in confidentiality. The Interactive Human Technology allows developers to simulate realistic human motion easily using rigid body dynamic physics to model the joints and constraints of the human skeleton. This technology replaces standard animations and provides an infinite variety of non-scripted interactions. This is the first application of Interactive Virtual Human technology in a game.
"MathEngine's innovative technology is an excellent addition to the Atlus development process," said Mr. Noriyuki Tomiyama, General Manager at Atlus Co., Ltd.. "Using MathEngine's tools and services, we are able to create a whole new type of game. With the Interactive Human Technology and the advanced features of the PlayStation(R)2, we can test the limits of how good games can be."
In addition to MathEngine's Interactive Virtual Human technology, MathEngine consultants will be working jointly with Atlus to seamlessly integrate MathEngine's technology into their new PlayStation(R) 2 game."

"The setting for the game takes place 67 years after the original Armored Core. The planet Mars has been terraformed and almost half of Earth's population has moved there. Giant Corporations on mars holds the economic and political power. The three major corporations manufacture different types of Mechs: Zio Matrix is the most technologically advanced Corp that manufactures the most hi-tech Mechs but at a high price as well. Emeraude Corp produces Mechs at the best cost/performance ratio. The third Corp, Blitz, makes accessories and combines parts from the other two types of Mechs.
In AC2 there will be all new capabilities, more upgradable parts (14 to be exact)." Check it out

Five or six games including sequels to the company's existing popular car racing and roll-playing versions will be released in the coming months, Atlus officials said.

PS2 Evergrace Information + Pics - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:14 PM, EST Gaming age got hold of some info on the PS2 game Evergrace.
Some of it:
"Evergrace was originally going to be developed on the PlayStation 2, but they decided at first against that and brought down their specifications for the game to something the regular PlayStation could handle. The Evergrace we had previously seen was then different from what they had envisioned the game to be. There were graphical effects such as specific facial expressions that they wanted to pull off, but were unable to produce successfully on the PlayStation, but the PlayStation 2 gave enough power to bring together what they wanted.
Currently progress of Evergrace is moving along nicely and is about 20% complete at the moment. Look for it to be released in Japan not long after the launch of the PlayStation 2 in Japan." Full article Pic #1, Pic #2, Pic #3, Pic #4.
PS2 Makes Sega's Job Difficult - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 12:11 PM, EST FGN scored some interesting info… a slice:
"PlayStation2: PlayStation2's future success is assured according to Fairfield Research's President and CEO Gary Gabelhouse. Despite Sega's recent proclamations of success, Dreamcast will have its work cut out to live side-by-side with the technological capabilities of Sony's next-gen console.
"It's not going to be easy [for Sega] -- it really depends on what kind of titles are out there," Gabelhouse explained to mmWire after Sega had announced the sale of one million U.S. Dreamcast units in the console's two months of availability. This impressive sales total was put in perspective by Sean McGowan, an analyst with Gerard Klauer Mattison, as he confirmed, "One million units in the United States has long been considered a minimum threshold for a platform to be considered successful, and it's a level that usually takes longer than 90 days to reach."

Paine Webber Talks PS2 + News Bits - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:12 AM, EST
Found this bit of info over at Core:
"Paine Webber analyst Chris Dixon recently expressed his thoughts on the future of Sony.
He went on to say that the current installed base of the DVD market is somewhere around 5 million. With the release of the PlayStation2, however, this number is expected to radically increase. In the coming year alone, analysts predict the DVD market will nearly double, most of which is attributed to the release of the PS2.
Taking this into consideration along with Sony's continued dedication to cutting costs, Paine Webber has labeled Sony's stock a sure buy, even if the price is considered astronomical for most investors." Full article
They also posted some small news bits:
The system's designer, Goto Yusuke, believes the system should be operated in the vertical position. But to be able to have the PS2 in that position you will need to buy the necessary vertical support stands separately at launch. The vertical stands will retail for approximately $19.
Considering the PS2 is DVD based, SCEI recently spoke out regarding the implications of the PS2 as a component in the 'home theater experience.' In particular, SCEI has confirmed that the PS2 can be hooked up to proper home theater amp's to create 5.1 channel surround sound.

A slice:
"This game puts some of those PS2 graphics features to use like anti-aliasing.
You won't see jagged edged cars anymore, now they are streamlined models that are accurate designs of the real life cars. Reflection mapping is used in just the right amount to give the most realistic metallic look I've seen yet in any racing game." Full preview
Sunrise Interactive developing a PS2 game.
Posted by @ 12:57 PM, EST
Sunrise Interactive announced that they are working on a PS2 game called Kikou Seiki G-Breaker.
Sunrise Interactive is a Japanese developer and is most know for their upcoming Dreamcast title Sunrise Heroes Chapter.
The PS2 game is a prequel to the Dreamcast game, and takes place 20 years earlier. The game will feature originally designed mechs, and unlike Sunrise Heroes Chapter, the game will not feature any of the popular anime mechs like Gundam or Gaogaiger. The roster for the mech designers of the game is quite impressive, including talented artists such as Shoji Kawamori (Omega Boost, Armored Core and Macross), Junya Ishigaki (Xenogears), and Kunio Okawara (the Gundam series).
The game is set to be released summer 2000 in Japan

Tecmo Talks Unison - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:31 PM, EST Core really milked Tecmo on interviews; they now kicked up an interview with Tecmo's Nagai-san, director behind their upcoming PS2 title, Unison
Some of it:
"CM: Speaking of the TGS demo, we thought it looked extremely impressive. Can you explain the gameplay system?
Nagai-san: We're constantly revising it so it's difficult to give an accurate picture, but I'll try. In short, the player becomes a member of a music group and must go through different 'events,' similar to levels. Players will attempt to increase their level, making them more popular or famous. Right now we're framing the gameplay system and deciding how the various grades and events should look.
CM: The early demonstration was impressive visually. In particular, it showcased a variety of lighting effects. Can you tell us what graphic effects you're working on for the final version?
Nagai-san: Yes, we're actually trying to enhance the lighting aspects, as you mentioned. For example, we're working on the spotlights, lighting and sparks. I think the effects in the TGS demo were extremely premature, so we're revising them completely along with the character models.
CM: Music seems extremely vital to the game. Can you describe how music will be involved in the gameplay?
Nagai-san: The development team is currently working on the music aspects of the game. We have a few basic ideas right now, but nothing solid. Actually, the concepts of the game will be developed first, then the music will be added." Full interview

They also smacked up some interesting news bits.
A slice:
"According to SCEI officials, there are currently no plans to allow PS2 preorders due to limited hardware quantities at launch. Retailers estimate that approximately 850,000 PlayStation2 units will be available as of 3/4/00, with the other 150,000 being allocated to Sony's planned online store.
Konami is already working on a handful of PlayStation2 titles including DrumMania, Gradius, and Powerful Professional Baseball 7 amongst others. When asked about the possibility of a Metal Gear sequel on the PlayStation2, company officials stated that they couldn't divulge any information. However, they continued by saying that Konami is preparing a formal announcement for early next year in Japan." Full article

The decision, according to company representatives, was due to the 'PlayStation2's expression capabilities, and the ability to strengthen the game graphically.' Company officials reaffirmed that the game is slated for release in Spring 2000." Full article
Here are a few lines from the interview:
"Core Magazine: Before we discuss Kunai, I'd like to talk briefly about Dead or Alive 2. In particular, a Dreamcast version has been confirmed, will there be a PlayStation2 version also?
Isomine-san: So far we've announced the Dreamcast version, which will be released in America next year. Thus far, we haven't decided if the Dreamcast version will be released in Japan. We'd like to release a PlayStation2 version since the machine is so attractive, but we haven't begun work on such a version.
CM: In terms of programming and considering you're just beginning to program for the PlayStation2, do you feel it's harder or easier than other consoles?
Isomine-san: There's definitely some difficulty in developing for the PS2.
Nagai-san: Yeah, but since we're not real programmers perhaps we shouldn't comment on that aspect. There is one thing I've found involved character creation though. For example when I create a character, the calculations with curves is faster than one with simple polygons. So in that sense, there are minor differences and perhaps difficulties in developing. Basically, all our programmers and CG designers have had to slightly change their developmental approach in order to optimize the PS2 capabilities." Full interview

Hybrid Heaven Director interview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 1:04 PM, EST
Gamespot posted an interview with Yasuo Daikai of Konami.
A few bits of it:
"OPM: Did the PlayStation2 hardware live up to your expectations? Yasuo Daikai: I think the PlayStation2 is just as I imagined it would be. However, there are many aspects and capabilities that we don't know about yet.
OPM: What do you think of the PlayStation2 hardware in general? What do you see as its strengths and weaknesses? YD: Since that it is the highest-grade machine at this moment, I think that all areas of the machine are its strengths. However, I do feel that the size of the VRAM is a tad small. Because of this there needs to be some consideration, and you must work to advance graphically.
OPM: Besides the obvious bonuses of better graphics and sound, what does the PlayStation2 let you do for your games that wasn't possible on the PlayStation or other consoles? YD: A completely different game can be made, with a high level of 3D, by making use of the high speed of the PlayStation2's CPU. This will definitely become a new era in gaming with the emergence of the PlayStation2. Please look forward to our game, as I assure you we'll be using technologies that we haven't been able to use on previous platforms."

“We were always primarily going to develop for the PC first simply because it’s the best prototyping platform. However, we are looking into converting onto the next-gen consoles,” said company CEO Demis Hassabis. “We’ll definitely be looking at PlayStation2 and possibly X-Box.”
Elixir is currently in the depths of the PC development of the title and console versions are far in the future – the PC outing will not ship until early 2001. “We don’t even have PlayStation2 dev kits in the office at the moment,” Hassabis added."

Sony CEO Outlines Vision for Networked World - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:57 PM, EST
Found a press release about Nobuyuki Idei’s speech yesterday at the Comdex..
Some of it:
"Sony will be a driving force in this new broadband era," Idei said. "We have the dynamic digital content the network demands and the key hardware platforms or gateways to manage it."
In his comments, he pinpointed three such platforms -- digital TVs, set-top boxes and other devices linked within home networks; mobile computing and imaging devices; and the PlayStation 2 videogame entertainment system.
Sony's concept for such an environment, said Idei, may be realized through its 1-1-1 project, in which the company plans by 2001 to develop a system with one remote control for all home devices, connected through one cable -- the i.LINK(R) digital interface.
It may also be realized through the much anticipated PlayStation 2, which will serve not only as an entertainment platform, but potentially as an in-home portal for broadband networks and a platform for digital content creation." Full press release

A bit of it:
"Earlier reports of a Star Wars Episode 2 game for PlayStation2, officially debunked by LucasArts, seemed more likely today as George Lucas yet again spoke on the technical prowess of PlayStation2.
At the American Comdex show Lucas made the following statement after the showing of a PS2 tech demo: "There was no Jabba the Hutt in the first Star Wars, because the technology was not available to produce what was in my imagination," Lucas said. "Digital technology frees the imagination, so that artists can turn their visions into reality - or at least the reality of movies."

Here's a bit of it:
"Tsutaya, one of the largest rental/retail chains in Japan, went on record regarding the system. In particular, local Shinjuku - Tsutaya director Kenzo Tsujimoto spoke openly about their existing DVD products and future plans. As is, Tsutaya allows customers to rent both DVD movies and DVD players. According to Tsujimoto-san, the DVD sections (hardware/movies) of their local shops has increased 3x since August, and they expect it to continue to expand with the release of the PlayStation2. Tsujimoto-san went on to say that the PS2 will 'synergize' their stores by infusing gaming, DVD movies, and even audio cds through one product." Full article
Hideo Kojima Talks PlayStation2
Gamespot posted an interview with Hideo Kojima, the director of Konami's Metal Gear Solid.
A few bits of it:
"OPM: What do you think of the PlayStation2 hardware in general? What are its strengths and weaknesses in your eyes? Kojima: If one simply focuses on the graphics capability of PS2, what you end up with will not be that different from existing games. With the appearance of PS1, 2D evolved to 3D. If one wants to re-create that impact with PS2, one must try to expand the game world extremely in a way that can be done only by adding the element of time to 3D and creating things in 4D. What is currently expected from PS2 among many people is "Hollywood graphics." If this is the direction to be taken, what we will be seeing won't be that different from PS and DC titles. Just like when games evolved from the Famicom (NES) to Super Famicom (SNES), graphics and sounds will indeed improve while playability remains the same. Fighting and racing games have become far more beautiful, but controls, gameplay, and the game experience all remain the same. What's important is what you want to express with PS2 and where you want to use its high-speed calculation capabilities.
OPM: What percentage of the PlayStation2's total potential do you think these first-generation games will use? Kojima: I think it will take three years from now for games to make complete use of the total potential of PS2. The first games will probably still be making good use of the machine's capabilities. What's key is where to use those capabilities and what to make stand out. After some trial and error, titles with new ways of expressions will appear. However, this is not going to happen right away."

Cumulative domestic shipments of DVD players are expected to be just under 1 million units at the end of 1999. However, Sony Computer Entertainment expects to sell 1 million of the new PlayStation units in two days of sales."
Racing on PS2
The Daily Radar put up an article covering racing games on the PS2.
A bit of it:
"So, here are the areas where we will see the racing genre change the most when the PlayStation2 comes to power:
Control:
The PlayStation2's control pad will have an immediate effect on racing games. The analog buttons will enable players to use partial brake and accelerate at their desired speed. Also, developers will create their games with the foreknowledge that every PS2 owner has a dual shock pad. That means that games can require players to use the dual analog sticks and force feedback can be an integral part of the gameplay rather than an add-on effect -- imagine getting a flat, or hitting a patch of gravel. Those things may be in there now, but they don't affect the gameplay at this point.
Connectivity:
When Sony introduces its broadband network, racing will become truly interesting. From that point on, players will no longer have to race AI opponents. They can challenge friends or just random PS2 owners. You could start full NASCAR type racing leagues where you meet a select group of players and periodically compete for a season-long trophy. Or what about racing for pink slips on an Internet league? Upgrade your car by beating other racers, who then get stuck with your AMC Gremlin while you take off in their Nissan Skyline." Full article

Star Wars games for the PS2.... put up a story about this.
A few quotes:
"Speculation regarding a PS2 game arose after George Lucas became publicly enamoured with the machine. Hes said in public several times the feelings he has for PlayStation2, the spokesperson continued, but the official line is no comment. Obviously, we want to be involved with the appropriate technology at the appropriate time. We have strong relationships with Nintendo, Sony, and Sega."
Star Wars is always an ongoing universe. Were working on more games based on Episode 1 for next year. Do you want to tell us what they are? No. How many are there? No comment. Were remaining very tight-lipped.
- 6:40 PM EST New Merrill Lynch PS2 forecast Gaming Age found a new report from the investment firm Merrill Lynch. Here's some of the predictions from Merrill Lynch:
"Merrill Lynch estimates that they expect Sony to sell an astounding 100 million PS2s from March 2000 to March 2004, with an incredible 960 million software units sold over that same time. This compares to just over 65 million original Playstation units sold through September 1999 with PS1 game sales at 510 million units.
Make no mistake, Sony will be in the red with the PS2 at first, with estimated losses from hardware of 24 billion in their fiscal year ending March 2000, and another 81 billion loss in the next fiscal year, but estimated to be moving positive by the next year. The estimated initial cost of producing the hardware for the PS2 is 52,000 yen, with 40,000 for the semiconductors alone. But the total cost is expected to fall by more than half by the fiscal year ending March 2002. Launch in the US and Europe is expected in September and October 2000." Full story

- 10:15 AM EST PlayStation2 Ports: Plug it In
The Daily Radar posted an article about the PS2s different ports and what they could be used for.
Interesting reading
Heres a sample:
"(IEEE1394) Connection:
The IEEE139 port is known by two names: Sony's is called I.Link and for Mac owners, it's FireWire -- there are some minor differences between the two. This high-data transfer port has the advantage of supplying (some) power to devices that are connected.
While this connection will support many of the same devices as USB, IEEE1394 port could also make your PS2 even more valuable with Digital Video capabilities. It would enable you to plug a digital video camera directly into the PlayStation, edit video on the fly and send it to a VCR to be taped. Some games may also be able to use realtime video you provide.
The possibilities for this port are endless." Full article
Criterion Answers Call For PS 2 Developers Gamefan posted some info on the RenderWare3 technology that will help game developers speed up their developing time:
"GameFan Online learned today that Criterion Software has just released a beta version of their new RenderWare3 technology, available for use by PlayStation 2 developers.

Criterions RenderWare3 technology has been under an intense optimization phase for the past six months. The company claims that this new 3-D toolkit should allow game developers to significantly accelerate their development schedules.
"We have received very positive feedback from over 300 RenderWare3 beta testers on the PC, and, from our own experience, it's easy to port RenderWare-based code from PC to PlayStation2," King added." Full article

- 4:30 PM EST More 3-D Sound System information
Asian Biztech posted some more info on the DiMAX 3-D Sound system:
"Stereo Dipole's two most distinctive technological points, and the reasons why it is able to produce its 3-D sound effect, are a new type of filter (signal processing circuit) design technology and the positioning of two speakers close together and near to the user, mimicking the way sound waves move around the user's head. With the speakers positioned in front of and near to the listener's head, the unit can ensure that sound waves reach the user's ears accurately and in the way intended, and can thus be used to create the impression of 3-D sound.
The DiMAX products that incorporate this Stereo Dipole technology will allow the faithful reproduction of five-channel surround sound, DVD Dolby AC3 and dts Surround, for example, via just two speakers. Furthermore, they can create acoustic effects for interactive applications such as video games in which multiple sound generators are employed. They are also capable of producing ordinary stereo output when playing conventional CDs.
DiMAGIC says it will launch sales of the DiMAX PS2 on March 4 next year, the same day that Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is scheduled to start selling the PlayStation2 in Japan. According to DiMAGIC, a number of game software developers are already in the process of planning new titles that will use the potential of DiMAX." Full article

Amano Talks Final Fantasy IX
Gamespot also posted an interview with Yoshitaka Amano, known by RPG fans as the character designer for Square's Final Fantasy series.
A bit of it:
"EGM: What was the main reason you stopped doing the character designs for Final Fantasy after FFVI? Amano: Maybe you should ask Squaresoft. I'm working on Final Fantasy IX right now.
EGM: Character design? Amano: Well, yes... but some of the stuff I can't disclose right now.
EGM: It would be very nice to see your work back in the series. We're all big fans.... Amano: I think in terms of publicity and marketing they will use my designs a lot more for IX.
EGM: Some of the recent Final Fantasy games have been futuristic in tone. Will the next game keep that setting, or will it be something different? Amano: I don't know if I am allowed to say this, but it is becoming closer to the original Final Fantasy. So instead of being a science fiction game, it's becoming more of a fantasy game again."

Climax announces PS2 RPG
Straight from Climax official page:
"Today we can announce that we intend our highly-anticipated Action RPG Symphony of Light to become our first project for the PlayStation 2. Symphony of Light is just reaching the end of the pre-production phase, so look out for an increase in our coverage of this Climax original game in the coming months as the serious work begins on bringing the world of SoL to life.
Symphony of Light is an action RPG for 1 to 4 players spread over 3 huge game worlds. Controlling a party of 4 characters (you can change the one you play at any time) you'll embark upon an epic quest exploring sprawling open countryside, scorching deserts, perilous mountain passes, dank cave networks, busy towns, sleepy villages, abandoned mines, long forgotten dungeons, dark forests, overgrown ancient temples and forbidding castles holding terrible secrets.
Along the way you'll face fiendish puzzles that'll make your head hurt, bloodthirsty monsters who want to gorge themselves on your entrails, fearsome enemies that'll make you want to turn the lights out, hide behind the sofa and pretend you've moved house, and...an idiot duck who thinks he's a wizard. Hmmm. In which case we'd better give you some weapons and spells and stuff to protect yourself with, hadn't we? Don't worry, we've put a fine assortment of them together for you, so you should never be short of a trusty sword or two.
Add to this fine mixture a plot where trusted friends become bitter enemies, a cat is always a girls' best friend, a surprise is hiding behind every castle turret and dungeon corner, and there's more than one world to be saved, and we think you'll have to agree you've got all the ingredients of a classic."

Ion Storm eyes PlayStation2
Found this at :
Imagine if your car was like this - it wouldnt work one morning just because the correct drivers arent installed. Its crazy! - one of the reasons Ion Storm is looking to the more powerful, user-friendly PlayStation2 as an alternative to PC development.
The question was originally put to John Cavanagh from Eidos about the use of 3D engines in future games, and if Ion Storm was considering developing its own - instead of ids Quake III: Arena engine. This raised the issue of power, and compatibility, and the fact that Ion Storm is now looking to PlayStation2 as a possible platform for Daikatana 2, or whatever else."

- 3:17 PM EST Dimagic unveils speakers for the PS2

Price is projected at around 20,000 yen.
The PlayStation 2 machine comes with a DVD player for use with a five-speaker system. The new system will be much cheaper and takes less space, the company claims." Pic of the speakers (thanks to videogames.com for the pic)
Interview with Kaoru Hagiwara
The Japanese mag Hyper Playstation EX posted an interview with Kaoru Hagiwara, producer of the PS2 game Splash Dive:
"HP: First of all, what kind of game is Splash Dive? KH: If you look at the screenshots, I think you'll understand that its a game about the ocean featuring dolphins. We're selling it as an action game. Not action-adventure, action. Players control the dolphin and try and make friends with other dolphins. Swimming at full speed, jumping above the water: I think it will have a refreshing sense of action to it. When you talk about games and the sea, adventure and simulations come to mind. There have been lots of games that feature floating or searching for fish, so we thought "How can we create a new, refreshing kind of action?"
HP: I see. The basic objective of the game is to become good friends with other dolphins, but what exactly do you do to accomplish this? KH: The key will be what the player does, but the excitement of discovering what to do, is something that I would like to keep quiet.
HP: In Splash Dive, you will be able to enjoy dolphins and their form of communication, right? KH: Dolphins, have their own form of communication, which is very different from humans. One type is voice. Kind of like "Dolphin-ese." We're trying to put in all of these into the game as best as we can.
We don't want to have a dolphin specialist look at the game and say "That's not right!" Therefore, we're really working on the dolphins' appearance and the way they sound.
HP: I think the dolphins' behavior is calculated in real-time, but what are some things you paid attention to while trying to create animal movement on the PS2? KH: Of course, we started from observing real animals. We watched lots of dolphins and videos. We had a pretty good knowledge of dolphins before we started making this. We served as pupils under a dolphin specialist as well. Anyway, we first concentrated on watching the actual animals themselves, and then looked at the programming techniques we would have to use. I used to be an AI specialist, so I am pretty good at researching animal movement patterns, but making it look like the real thing is a different problem indeed. If you just leave their movement patterns to that, they look too intelligent, which is unnatural.
HP: So the dolphins' behavior is likely to change over the course of the game? KH: Basically. How the player controls the dolphin also changes the course, so you can create a unique experience for yourself. Also, when you follow along your dolphin buddies, you don't which way they're going to go each time.
HP: With the PS2, I think the feeling of water and how the ocean is displayed are very realistic. What do you think? KH: With the PS, you could easily tell that the game was something man-made, but with the PS2, perhaps you will mistake the game for the real thing? In the planning stages of a game, there is a presentation within the company, with one side explaining what the game screens are. One might think "Is this a photograph?" Just by looking at it, not being able to tell the difference whether it's a PS2 screenshot or a picture. That is the difference between the PS and the PS2.
HP: In terms of dolphins and in terms of the ocean, I think we will provide an experience that you can't get on other consoles. I hope you're looking forward to it." Splash Dive pic
