Cable guide - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 6:28 PM, EST
IGN posted an article about the PS2’s different ports and the cables that you'll need to use with them.
Here’s a bit:
The Digital Out (Optical) port on the rear of your PlayStation is the port that is used to connect your system digitally to a Dolby Digital or DTS Receiver. You will need to use a Digital Optical Cable (Also referred to a Toslink Digital Audio Cable) to connect your console to your receiver in order to get full Dolby Digital (AC3) or DTS surround sound. Digital is preferred over analog because it has a wider dynamic range, which results in clearer highs and deeper, tighter bass, without the distortion common with analog connections. If your receiver only has a Digital Coaxial input, then you won't be able to connect your PS2 to it.

Newsweek posted a funny review of Sony’s Playstation2.
A slice:
Setup is so easy an adult can do it. The opening “browser” screen shows a spacey abstract floating object. You’ll quickly get past that, maybe to play a DVD movie, but more likely by inserting a game disc in the slide-out slot. I started with Ridge Racer V. It was like every other auto-race game ever made except for the stunning— stunning —graphics. As your car careers into barricades, photorealistic landscapes shoot by. Next was Tekken Tag, a familiar kick-and-hit Mortal Kombat slugfest—supercharged by lifelike rippling of muscles and such. By then my 10-year-old son came home; spotting the Sony, his eyes widened to the approximate size of my TV screen. So much for homework.
Papaya Studio interview - Comments (0)

Gaming Age posted an interview with Papaya Studio's, Lin Shen, the Creative Director of Top Gear Dare Devil for the PS2.
Here’s a bit:
Q: With a great deal of racing/driving titles coming to the PlayStation 2, what do you believe makes Top Gear Dare Devil stand out among the rest?
A: It is a very competitive market for us, especially since Papaya is a very small developer. We do not have the ability to compete with the big publishers in terms of advertising or marketing. In some way that actually works out good for our game development, because we don't have "marketing people" coming and telling us to make nonsense changes on the game. Top Gear Dare Devil doesn't have fancy wrapping and sugar coating. It is a pure and solid game for gamers who are intellectual and unique. It's an intense game with a lighthearted feel to it that is very satisfying to play.

"Last night, I played it with my coworkers, we walked through the forest, and it looked beautiful. The game itself is already connected to the company's local network, and we were able to chat inside the game too. For example, you can set up a PC in the local arcades and play from there. Then you can continue the game once you return to the office or back home. Furthermore, there are possibilities of using cell phones to level up your character's skills or open up your own store and see how well business is going.”

GIA kicked up a review of Volition’s PS2/PC RPG, Summoner:
But problems inherent in bringing a PC-style RPG to a console aren't the only things wrong with Summoner. There are also things Volition did poorly all by themselves. Though they were the ones to figure out how to achieve some sort of anti-aliasing on the PS2, it hasn't done much for the graphics in Summoner. What the game resembles most is some kind of slightly higher-resolution form of a PSX adventure game, but with worse character models.

Sega games on PS2? - Comments (0)

In a financial report Sega today released this could be found:
Sega tried to calm concerns by announcing a far-reaching new business strategy, including a future plan to provide its game software to rival makers' consoles.``We are already in talks with a few foreign firms,'' Sato said when asked about licensees. He declined to give details.
That transformation into a software provider from a hardware maker marked a drastic, and welcome, policy shift, analysts said.
Sega declined to specify for which rival game consoles it plans to make software, and emphasized it would not withdraw from the Dreamcast hardware business.
``We applaud the company's decision to shift its focus to providing content and away from the loss-making home game hardware business even though it isn't pulling completely out of hardware,'' said Nomura Securities analyst Yuta Sakuai

PSX Nation posted an interview with SCE President Kaz Hirai:
J.M.: The reputation that, in the industry is perceived, is that Sony compared with Sega and Nintendo has the lesser of the internal studio developers. Why is there no other game from Sony besides "Fantavision" (available for launch)?
Kaz Hirai: We have a lot of PlayStation 2 games in development - in our internal studios, obviously. But we felt that it's more important for us to make sure that we have a game that we're satisfied with in terms of the gameplay, in terms of the quality, before we bring it out to market. And if that means that we can't bring it out on day one, and it's going to come out, say in November or December, then we feel that's more appropriate a strategy than bringing out a game that we're not fully confident that is complete. And also the fact that we have 26 titles at launch really is a testament to the support that we've been getting from out third-party publishing partners. Especially when you consider that 25 of the 26 are from third-parties.

Eurogamer also posted a preview of Volition’s upcoming PS2/PC first-person shoot, Red Faction:
What sets the game apart from other first person shooters is that your weapons have a very noticeable effect on the world around you. While other games use "decals" to represent bullet holes and rocket blasts on the walls of their levels, in Red Faction you can blast a hole right through the wall.
The game features what Volition are calling "Geo-Mod technology", as well as a fully functional physics system. Combined they allow you to interact with your surroundings like never before. For example, if you shoot your gun at a pipe you might burst it, causing steam to pour out through the hole. And thanks to the game's particle system, the result looks little short of stunning.

SSX interview - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 4:43 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted an interview with Steve Rechtschaffner, the executive producer of SSX.
Here’s a bit:
GS: One of the more amazing things about the game is its courses. Who designed them and what were the inspirations behind them?
SR: Well, they were designed by a group of people: myself, Larry Lapierre, who is the producer, three course designers, and three people who actually built all the objects on the course. It was a very cool process where we started out with a combination of themes of what we wanted the courses to be - like the Aloha Ice Caps. That was probably one of the first ideas we had. We thought, "Wouldn't it be cool to be on an iceberg when it's breaking apart." Then we went back and decided that because of its intricate design it would be an expert-level course. So we had to decide what it is that the players know how to do when they get to that course and what is it that we want to give people on this course that they haven't done before.

Usually you either love the control in the Ridge Racer titles or hate it, though that isn't really the case for RRV. It is both easy to pick up for beginners, and deep enough for veterans, and doesn't really require you learn to powerslide perfectly, to compete and have fun. Of course, some hardcore RR fans may frown on that, but I believe it was a good choice on Namco's part. The "bumper car" effect, when hitting walls and other cars has been toned down as well, thankfully.

CNN posted an article about the PS2 launch.
Here’s a bit:
Sony said it will ship 100,000 units a week to retailers every week from now until Christmas. Company executives acknowledge the trickle may not be adequate to handle the holiday season demand. Despite the delays Sony still expects to sell 3 million consoles by the end of March. The PlayStation 2 will be released in another
17 countries on November 24, specifically the European Union, Switzerland and Norway.
Many retail outlets pre-sold PlayStation 2 consoles, but the spotty supply suggests many consumers, even those who ordered them in advance, would be left twiddling their thumbs instead of their joystick controllers after day one.
"Customers have been waiting all year for this launch and the limited allocation has only increased the frenzy," said Kirk Konigsbauer of Amazon.com, which begins offering a limited number of consoles for online sale on a first come/first serve basis Thursday afternoon.
Bloomerg also posted an article about the PS2 launch:
``Everyone is coming by and asking for it,'' said Cynthia Rodriguez, who rings up sales at the FAO Schwarz store on Fifth Avenue in New York. The toy retailer decided not to carry the PlayStation 2 at any of its 43 locations around the U.S. because it couldn't guarantee availability, she said.
Sony scaled back the number of PlayStation 2 consoles it would ship at the introduction because of parts shortages. The machine already had been expected to be in great demand, and thousands of game enthusiasts have already paid cash deposits for the device. Last month, Sony said it would ship about 100,000 units a week following the introduction to ensure a steady supply.
Gamers.com kicked up some photos of people waiting in line to get their PS2.

3.52 mln PS2s shipped in Japan - Comments (0)

Sony said that 980,000 of the sleek black machines were shipped in the second quarter, and reiterated that it was on track to ship 10 million worldwide by the end of the business year to March 31.
The world's second-largest consumer electronics maker hopes to sell four million in Japan, three million in North America, and three million in Europe.
Eight million PlayStation 2 software games, produced by both Sony and other companies, have been shipped so far. Of that, 3.4 million were sold in the three months to September.

Feedmag’s Mark Pesce reports on the console industry, about the PS2 and it’s upcoming competitors:
It's Sony's intention to short-circuit this trend, by producing a platform that's inexpensive -- just $300, likely dropping to $199 by next Christmas -- and more than powerful enough to handle the most demanding 3-D games for the next few years. Sony's design for the PS2 is both sophisticated and elegant, comprised of four separate processors: the "Emotion Engine," a microprocessor far more sophisticated than the Pentium III; a "Graphics Synthesizer" capable of blasting polygons to the television; and two "Vector Units," which haven't been seen before except on exotic supercomputers such as Cray's Y-MP. It's not just a video-game console, it's a cheap supercomputer.

Gamespot posted a review of Radical Design’s first-person-shooter, TimeSplitters:
TimeSplitters features a lot of different weapons, as the game's levels are spread out between 1935 and 2035. So you have a wide range of standard weapons, such as the rocket launcher, minigun, assault rifle, and twin Uzis, and you also have an assortment of futuristic weapons, which mostly act like a large collection of laser rifles. In setting up multiplayer matches, you can pick predefined sets of weapons or configure your own custom set.
Throughout the game, you're treated to quite a bit of voice acting, as the rest of your squad is constantly relaying useless information to you, and there are numerous scripted cutscenes that show your team drawing away enemy fire or getting into position for a small assault on a fortified enemy position. The voice work is, for the most part, laughable, and the characters' lips seem to be moving to the original Japanese soundtrack, making the cutscenes feel even more chintzy and out of place.

Somehow Aaron has found time in between articles to actually PLAY the new system. He has posted his thoughts on SSX, Madden, and DOA2, as well as the system itself.
Here’s a bit
SSX: This games flat out ROCKS!! Not since 1080 for N64, has a snowboarding titles been this much fun to play. There are several characters to choose from, and many more that are available to be unlocked. After you select one of the available courses (most have to be unlocked) you can either, take a warmup run, compete, or free ride down. The courses in SSX, are absolutely amazing. Beautiful scenery and unbelievable course design make this game by far the most impressive PS2 I’ve played to date.

Aaron just got his US PS2 and here’s the report:
Well, the madness is upon us, and I am glad to report that I have made it out alive, PS2 in hand. To give you a little background on where I was: I was at the Electronics Boutique, in Chesapeake, Virgina. Here’s my story:
Thursday began just like any other day, except that I was up at 6am, and a new console was launching. I got up, threw on some wrinkled clothes, skipped the shower, (Hey, the worse I smell, the faster they’ll get me in and out of the store) and headed out into the crisp morning air. As I headed off to the mall, I went over in my head everything that I would need that I had not pre-ordered. Most important of those items was a memory card. Recently I was having doubts as to whether or not my Japanese memory card would hold US and Japanese data at the same time. I screeched into the mall parking at 6:41am, and saw a group of cars parked near the mall entrance. It’s showtime!
Upon entering the mall, I heard the unmistakable sound of dozens of freaks just like me that had gotten up at the crack of dawn for a videogame console. As I approached the line, I thought to myself "I’m not as big a geek as THAT guy, am I?" That guy, being the 30 year old playing Pokemon gold, and carrying a Pokemon backpack. After assuring myself that I was a 24 year old geek, not a 30 year old geek, I took my place in line. I spent most of the time in line talking to a kid and his mother, and listening to how much stuff his mom was hooking him up with. Lucky kid.

Gamespot UK posted an interview with Ubi Soft, talking about their upcoming F1 game:
GSUK: What about the graphics engine? Did you introduce some new special effects?
JB: Our graphics engine was specially built for the PS2 by an internal team and the result is that we can almost display what we want. We also wanted to emphasis special effects to give again the player the feeling he is IN the race. Just have a look to the heat effect of the rain to be convinced!!! Check also the heat effect on the back of each car, the environment mapping, the backfire, the mark that the cars will leave on the road if braking too quickly...
Our graphics engine can display tracks with more than 130,000 polygons and for the cars we "limited" ourselves to 7000 polygons including the wheels! This level of detail has never been seen before in a Formula One game.

Posted by @ 5:16 PM, EDT Gaming Age posted their Top 5 picks of the PS2 launch games.
Here’s a bit:
1) SSX
SSX is the PlayStation 2's biggest sensation. Who would have figured that a snowboarding title, would be a system launch's best AAA title? Well it has happened, as EA's latest title is definitely brilliant on many levels. Great visuals, a kick-ass soundtrack, a very intuitive control scheme, and a great 2-player mode has pretty much given it a lock on being Game of Launch. Well done EA!
2) Ridge Racer V
Namco's latest title in the Ridge Racer series, despite being available since day one of the Japanese PS2 launch, has believe it or not, ranked as our number 2 pick. Many have commented on how little that Ridge Racer V has pushed the RR series, and some believe it is a step backwards, but the package Namco has put together still makes it worthy of any racing game fan. Again, great graphics, super fast driving action, cool cars and really nice (although foggy) 2-player modes.
FiringSquad kicked up a review of Epic’s Ps2 version of Unreal Tournament:
"Rampage!"
Just like the PC version of UT, the game will acknowledge your accomplishments during the game. Score a headshot on your opponent and the PS2 screams back "Headshot!," kill two opponents in rapid succession and you'll hear "Double Kill!" The action can get quite an intense during a heated battle of deathmatch or CTF, and the game fully acknowledges that.
Between the excellent sounds of the weapons and the in-game vocal cues, the sounds of Unreal Tournament are sure to get the adrenaline flowing.
Interface
One thing we didn't like about the Playstation 2 conversion for UT was the interface for commanding your teammates. While the PC version featured an excellent system that allows you to communicate with your teammates while fighting, (the voice menu) the PS2 version takes you to a separate, blank screen that features significantly less functionality. We couldn't find a way to issue orders to our teammates other than this command screen, making issuing commands a huge hassle, practically impossible during a firefight.
GamePro punched up a review of Midway’s Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2:
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 is a great sequel to what was one of the best Dreamcast games to date. On the PlayStation 2, this arcade boxing game really shines. The wild characters are hilarious, the gameplay is incredibly fun, and the graphics are excellent. Midway scores a KO in Round 2.
GamePro also posted a review of Tekken Tag Tournament:
Fans of this ferocious fighter franchise, of either the arcade or home version, will immediately feel at home with the controls. Using just the top-four buttons, directional pad, and a shoulder button to switch between fighters, bruisers can execute devastating 10 hit-combos and bone-crunching linking moves. Even if you're a Tekken newbie, the Practice mode will quickly get you in shape, as it lists every special move, which the computer will demonstrate how to do if you're unsure what the move is supposed to look like.
DailyRadar posted a review of Radical Design’s first-person shooter, TimeSplitters:
Once several levels have been beaten, the game opens up a Challenge mode. Most of the Challenges are short shoot-'em-ups provided for the hyper player who doesn't have the 15 minutes or so needed to complete a full level. Our favorite Challenge gives players exactly two minutes to shoot the heads off of 50 zombies. Zombies, being inherently slow and dimwitted, are fun to shoot as it is, but this fun is doubled when players must use their shotguns to cause undead heads to pop off decaying necks like dandelion tops.
Core posted first impressions of RockStar Games Midnight Club: Street Racer:
Moving on, and in terms of game-play, Midnight Club focuses on drag racing through the streets of bustling cities. Thereby, players can choose their own path through a given city, provided they also pass several checkpoints. In terms of play mechanics, the game plays well, and the control is quite responsive. However, the game runs at 30 frames per second, and there's still intermittent slowdown. Other game-play modes include capture the flag, wherein players race across a city and attempt to secure a flag before opponents can steal it. Much like its visual presentation however, Midnight Club provides a decidedly short and slightly disappointing game-play experience.

The gameplay of Smuggler's Run has been compared favorably to that of Driver's. When you accept your mission you'll be running from not only the cops, but rival gang members as well. Where this game differs from Driver is the levels in which you'll be making your getaways. Each level is a massive 3D world in which you are free to drive through, over, under, and around anything to make your escape.

He would not specify how many units the company managed to secure but said each of the company's 619 outlets will have some Thursday on a first-come basis.

Gamespot kicked up a review of From Software’s mech fighter, Armored Core 2:
If you had to pick two words to describe Armored Core 2, "time" and "effort" would certainly be those words. With a gameplay engine and control system that are one part Mechwarrior and one part Virtual On Oratorio Tangram, Armored Core 2 may not be a burden, but it's no cakewalk either. You begin with a modest mech, with the lowest-level rifle, plasma sword, missile battery, and armor compliment. As you complete each mission or best an opponent in the arena, you earn credits toward the purchase of new parts. There are 15 part categories to attend to: head, core (torso), arms, legs, generator, FCS targeting, booster, back weapon left, back weapon right, arm weapon left, arm weapon right, radiator cooling system, inside options, extension systems, and optional parts.
The boys over at DailyRadar posted their impressions of 989’s NFL Gameday 2001.
A slice:
GameDay 2001's gameplay is no less super. In fact, this is one of the most super football games we've ever played. The AI is certainly unique. For instance, on passing plays, the defense will leave running backs completely wide open with no defender within 20 yards. Hardcore football fans like us will cry "This is the most super football game we've ever played!" when they realize that they can beat the game on the hardest level simply by dumping the ball out to the running backs again and again. Because of this, GameDay is not a football game, it's an arcade game, and a super one at that.
Graphically speaking, Midway has done a decent job of bringing Ready 2 Rumble to the PlayStation2. Several graphical nuances including blurry knockouts, new taunts and winning animations have been included. While the majority of the boxes look impressive, some feature visual distortions. For example, some body parts appear to use stretched textures, distorting their otherwise polished appeal. On the whole, the game looks graphically decent, but not substantially different than its predecessor (on the Dreamcast).
TIME article about the PS2 - Comments (0)

TIME magazine posted a feature on the debut of PS2 and its effect on the industry:
For Sony it's not just fun and games. The economics of computer gaming have come a long way from the drop-a-quarter-in-the-slot days. It's now a $20 billion-a-year worldwide business. Last year games contributed more than $6 billion to Sony's sales and $730 million in operating profits. The Japanese giant has sold a mind-boggling 75 million first-generation PlayStations, 27 million of them in the U.S. And with game consoles grabbing an ever larger share of the game market from PCs and Macs, sales of PlayStation2 could get even bigger.

The gameplay is similar to the series' previous incarnations, but with some additional twists. Sure the sprints focus on tapping the DualShock2's buttons as fast as possible, but the other events are more involved. A new addition to the series this year is Rhythmic Gymnastics. No that was not a typo, if you want to be the best videogame athlete in the world you will have to master this event. Its style is similar to that of Dance Dance Revolution, where you press the buttons in rhythm as they appear on the screen. How well you do this affects your score which will be presented to you by a series of judges.

Straight pool, US nine, Eight, International nine, Frozen, Rotation, and Free Play are seven reasons why you won't be getting bored by this title any time soon.

Reviews of the PS2 launch games are popping up all over the web:
Tekken Tag Tournament review
Gamespot gives Namco’s fighter a try and gives it 9.6/10.
Here’s a bit of it:
Graphically, the game has taken a very large leap, and the arcade version of the game looks downright ugly by comparison. The characters are very, very smooth, and the backgrounds are amazing and filled with lots of movement, from helicopters to crowds of spectators. Some stages are well lit, showing off some really excellent lens-flare techniques. There are also some nice little touches, such as grass being crushed down by falling fighters then slowly springing up afterward. However, the game suffers from one particular problem that has in fact been seen throughout the series, but with the power of the PlayStation 2 behind it, you'd expect it to be a thing of the past. The problem is the same one that showed up in Street Fighter EX3. While the backdrops of the fights and the ground on which you fight look great separately, they don't mesh very well. The result is two different types of scrolling, making it look as if the battle is occurring on a small, circular spinning platform surrounded by a nearly stationary background. It's easy to miss while you're actually playing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on watching the game closely.
Dynasty Warriors 2
GamePro kicked up a review of Koei’s samurai action game.
A bit:
The first thing that will hit you when you play DW2 is the sheer number of warriors onscreen. It's like there's a huge battle going on, and you're right in the middle of it, with arrows flying, soldiers fighting, and horse-mounted generals charging into the fray. A few graphical glitches aside (the camera getting blocked by the characters, some flicker in close-up fighters), DW2 will keep your PS2 busy with frantic, detailed, and colorful graphics. Note that there is no blood to speak of in this title; Koei has decided to keep the game rated Teen, to expand the potential audience.
TimeSplitters
GamePro also posted a review of Radical Design’s first-person shooter TimeSplitters:
The options in this game will make your head spin. When you go multiplayer, you can choose to play two-player cooperative or go for a head-to-head competition. You choose your level and your game type (options range from Deathmatch to Tag to Capture-the-Bag and more), and then you select your weapon set (you can even create a custom set from a list of all the weapons in the game) and choose your list of bots, down to the number, type, and difficulty of the computer opponents. Set teams, pick special rules, and go at it. If that's not enough, you can crack open the included level editor and create your own labyrinth, save it to a memory card, and put your friends through your own personal hell.
Madden NFL 2001
Not a full review, but the boys over at Core posted their first impressions of EA’s football game:
Moving on to game-play, Madden 2001 features several modes including; Quick Start, Exhibition, Franchise, Season, and Practice. Unfortunately, much like NHL 2001, once you've selected your team and associated options, be prepared to wait approximately 30 seconds before the game begins. In terms of play mechanics Madden performs well, especially from the simulation perspective. In particular, the player models react realistically to tackles, slides, and even tripping over other players. Furthermore, the running in-game statistics were a welcomed surprise. Still, I couldn't help but feel as if the game-play was somewhat sluggish. There's no slowdown to speak of, but the game still plays somewhat slower paced than football fans might be accustomed to.
NHL 2001
The lads at Gamespot UK posted some first impressions of EA’s hockey game:
Once you take to the ice it's surprising just how easy it is to become familiar with the different players in your squad. Not only do they all look unique but their names and a couple of ingenious icons representing key skills appear alongside them whenever you assume control. This is the sort of feature you'll quickly start to take for granted in what must surely be the best ice hockey game ever to appear on any system. If the level of detail in NHL 2001 is representative of the rest of EA Sports' PS2 titles we're in for a very good sporting year indeed.

Moto GP
IGN and Dailyradar posted reviews of Namco’s motorcyle racer, Moto GP.
Here’s a bit of DR’s review:
And if a game ever cried out for Dual Analog controls, then this is it. Although it's not touch-sensitive like Ridge Racer, the little analog stick makes the perfect tool for leaning those bikes subtly and not so subtly into corners. The vibration is kept to a minimum and truly adds to the experience -- something that's going to make PS2 gaming all the more involving in years to come.
The Bottom Line: Let's be quite clear - if you're a 500cc motorbike fan, you're all set, it's pure genius. Otherwise, this is a detailed, fun and addictive racing game with a twist.

Here’s a bit:
But what if you want to edit and print out photos with your trusty console? Just pick up the Sony Popegg, an iMac-styled inkjet printer that’s scheduled to hit the Japanese market on November 15th. Sony reps were on-hand to demo PictureFan, the printer’s pack-in software, which serves as an image database, visual Rolodex, and mini-desktop publishing app. A simplified interface allows you to pull images off the camera’s Memory Stick, view them full-screen, and re-size them. After you’re satisfied with the results, you can store it all on a standard 8MB memory card.

Infogrames announced today that the newest installment in the Test Drive Off-Road series, Test Drive Off-Road-Wide Open, is in development for the PS2:
"With the technical advancements allowed by the PlayStation 2, this new addition to the Test Drive Off-Road family will go beyond what any off-road game has accomplished before," said Chris Downend, director of product development for racing titles at Infogrames, Inc. "Players will have room to roam in the "go anywhere" environment. Racing freely through expansive real-world locations that are graphically magnificent and true-to-life in some of the world's most desirable off-road vehicles will make this one of the first must-have racing games for PlayStation 2."
Four launch games from Take Two - Comments (0)

Take-Two Interactive announced today that it will ship 4 games for October 26th.
The games: Smuggler's Run, Midnight Club, Q-Ball: Billiards Master and Surfing H30.
Here’s a bit of the press release:
"Our software has the opportunity to aid in defining the success of PlayStation 2," said Sam Houser, President of Take-Two's Rockstar Games. "Smuggler's Run and Midnight Club: Street Racing are games that will show consumers what PlayStation 2 can technically achieve. Our development teams have been working for over a year to ensure that our Company is well represented at the launch of PlayStation 2, and we are very pleased with what is most certainly the strongest publishing launch in Take-Two and Rockstar's history."

Gameloft kicked up an interview with the lead designer of Smuggler’s Run, Wing Cho.
A slice:
6) What would you say makes Smuggler's Run a unique must-buy experience amidst the glut of PS2 launch titles?
Because, there has never been a game experience quite like this! The huge levels in which you can see out for miles, and can practically go ANYWHERE has never been fully realized until SR. Not to mention the fact, there are a whole bunch of other vehicles, driving and "dog fighting" each other, all independently working with or against you. It’s a car combat game, without weapons! And on a subconscious level, I think it’s everyone's dream to be chased by police and be able to outrun and outsmart them. In SR, you can do that!
Madden NFL 2001 review - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 7:54 PM, EDT
Daily Radar posted a review of EA’s football game.
Some of it:
What first caught our attention in Madden 2001 were the jaw-dropping graphics. The level of detail on each player is almost silly. Faces show expressions, eyes move, grass gets stuck in helmets and players' muscles flex and move like they do in real life.
Add to that the amazing environmental graphics, including super-realistic stadiums, cool weather effects and sidelines that are jam-packed with realistic polygonal characters including coaches, players and camera crews. Details like this make the game seem less like a game and more like a real broadcast. The presentation is typical EA quality, which, needless to say, is top notch.
Unreal Tournament review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:53 PM, EDT
Gamers’ Republic posted a review of Epic’s PS2 first-person shooter.
A bit:
Unreal on the PS2 is a different story. With its peculiar drop in frame rate and muddy resolution, I excused the preview version's look because I thought that this was the best that a console FPS could do. Don't get me wrong, all of the cool things about Unreal-PC are still intact. The awesome weapons and effects are still there. The spot-on control is as intuitive as ever, despite the fact that you'll have to fight to get accustomed to the PS2 controller. The fantatstic level designs, yadda, yadda...all of that is there. Like Quake 2 on PSX, this very much Unreal. As ports go, it's satisfactory. The question remains, though, "Why isn't this PC perfect?" Timesplitters shows that fast, hi-resolution, 60 frame per second FPS games are possible, and with the mathematical power of the PS2, one would imagine that the game would be just as sharp as it's PC cousin. It's questionable that this game couldn't be done on Dreamcast.

The boys over at Core posted their first impressions of EA’s hockey game, NHL 2001:
Sonically, NHL 2001 performs as well as expected. The commentating is slightly sporadic at times, but otherwise fine. The in-game sound effects are excellent, especially the post-goal vocal samples. In the end, NHL 2001 is perhaps an excellent foundation for the next-generation of hockey titles. If EA can manage to significantly cut-down loading times and fix the slow-down problems, next season could be the best yet for hockey fans.

Monster Cable's PS2 cables - Comments (0)

IGN posted an article about Monster Cable's PS2 cables:
The most impressive demonstration was inside one of their stereo theaters, though, where we compared Midnight Club, Smuggler's Run, and DOA2 Hardcore running through Monster's composite and S-video cables. The difference, if you've never seen it, is striking, even on an inexpensive TV - we saw comparisons on a four-figure plasma display and a $199 Trinitron. Through S-video, you get a far sharper picture overall, with more lines of resolution and much less dot crawl, especially in moving elements of the picture. Midnight Club's New York cityscape flew past in far clearer detail. We also got a look at a cross-section of the thick, multilayered shielding that goes into the Monster Game cables, resulting in much less signal loss than ordinary cables.

The Dead or Alive series is based on two things; Fast and Furious gameplay, and of course beautiful, scantily clad women. Since this is a fighting game I'll discuss the highlights of the gameplay first. DOA2 offers a host of gameplay options: one on one fighting, tag battles (a feature now standard in most fighters), time attack, story mode and team battle. Fighting one and one in DOA2 is a bit different from any other fighting experience you may have ever had.

PS2 compatible digital camera at World PC Expo 2000 - Comments (2)

Gamers.com posted an article about the World PC Expo 2000 that started yesterday in Tokyo.
Some of it:
The two demo games on display utilizing the digital camera are T&E Soft's Golf Paradise DX and Idea Factory's Okao Haishaku! Torikomi Tengoku (rough translation: Got Your Face! Integration Heaven). Golf Paradise DX is the sequel to T&E's first PS2 title, Golf Paradise. In DX, the Picture Paradise function of the Cybershot P1 allows the game to take pictures of your face and put it on a character in the game. In the current build, you can take three expressions of your face (happy, angry and normal) that will be displayed on the character on the screen. Idea Factory's game is rather simplistic in comparison to Golf Paradise DX. With their software, you can edit your photos and create postcards with them.

Midnight Club: Street Racing review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:44 PM, EDT
Gamespot kicked up a review of Rockstar Games’ city racer, Midnight Club: Street Racing.
Here’s a bit:
Midnight Club is an arcade-style racing game - so while the physics have a realistic feel to them, they've been exaggerated for more impressive skids, jumps, and crashes. On wet streets, some of the cars will spin around a full 360 degrees when you pop the e-brake and yank the wheel to one side. The cars even jerk a bit when you peg the accelerator to the floor, thanks to the extreme torque some of the motors put out. The control is easy to figure out, and the variance between the game's numerous vehicles makes the game interesting from beginning to end.

Gamespot also had a chat with the Volition team, asking them about their experience with PS2 development, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube.
A bit of it:
GS: How has your development experience with the PS2 been so far? We've heard a lot of feedback from developers saying that it's difficult to work on.
PH: Any lead technology is difficult. We were fortunate that we were one of the first developers to start work on the PS2 in August of 1999. We had the early revs of the development hardware and were working on Summoner. Most of the early work was done on a low library level, where we were getting some old Volition code to run, and that had a huge benefit for Red Faction because a lot of it was shared. So the experience the Summoner team's gone through of going up a very steep learning curve on the hardware directly goes into Red Faction. The guys on Red Faction have the benefit of that experience. We're basically looking at a second-generation PlayStation 2 title that's close to being completed.
SSX Snowboarding review - Comments (0)

It's a pretty rare thing when a game comes seemingly out of nowhere and absolutely rocks its platform. Well, the recent list includes UFC for Dreamcast, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for PSX and Crimson Skies for PC -- and now, the incredible SSX for PS2. Brought to life by EA Canada, this unsponsored, unlicensed snowboarding game is all about speed, shortcuts, crazy tricks and seeing who's the most insane person to ever step on a snowboard. Beautiful graphics, huge courses, great multiplayer and infinite replayability round out the package to make this hands-down the best game on the PS2.

American Arcade review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:50 PM, EDT
We added a review of Astroll’s pinball game, American Arcade.
Here’s a bit:
When I played my first game on the "Western Sheriff" table I was informed that I would need 31,500 points to advance. "No problem" I thought to myself, knowing that a score of 150 million on my favorite game "Jurassic Park" is usually what it takes to get a free game. What I forgot to account for was inflation. Not only are today's prices inflated, but apparently so are our scoring systems. I watched in horror as my ball bounced from target to target accumulating only ten points at a time. Fortunately I pulled my self together and started to clear some tables, and I rolled through: Surf King, Mars Patrol, Special Lanes, Fun Circus, and several others. As I opened up each new table I found that each was slightly more intricate, and more modern than the previous one. I really enjoyed seeing the new technology that was utilized on the newer tables, and it left me wanting more tables to unlock.

Red Faction preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:45 PM, EDT
Daily Radar posted a preview of Volition’s PS2/PC first-person shooter Red Faction.
A bit:
After a brief Q&A session, the game's producers were more than eager to show off some demos. First up was the glass house, a perfect demonstration of the processing power they've been able to pull from the PS2. Shooting any panel once causes the pane to splinter; hitting it again causes the pane to explode into hundreds (if not thousands) of shards. More impressive is that the point of explosion reflects exactly where the second shot hit - not to mention the minor impact damage suffered by a less than cautious player. Other examples included taking out an APC bearing bridge and repeatedly firing rockets at a wall, leaving a navigable tunnel that reflected dozens of in-game yards. Destructive? Certainly. A bold new step in a mostly tired genre? Quite possibly...

Orphen and his party are all visible onscreen at all times, and the camera can be manually shifted to accommodate any sort of view desired. The game's button layout is wholly customizable: One button allows Orphen to jump, one serves as the standard action button, and the other two control his projectiles and melee attacks outside of the combat engine. When you're in the exploration mode, Orphen's attacks let him aggressively interact with the environments, making it possible, for example, for him to launch a projectile at a barricade, thus destroying it, or to attack an enemy in the environment.

Midway brings Artic Thunder to PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:43 PM, EDT
IGN is reporting that Midway will bring its new arcade game, Artic Thunder, to the PS2.
Here’s a bit:
Arctic Thunder takes the Hydro Thunder concept into the snowmobile arena, adding in the usual Midway flair with rampant action and light humor. Essentially, players get to jump onto a high-powered snowmobile and ride it through several snowy conditions against as many as eight other players. Arctic Thunder appears to be using a 3D PC engine, probably the latest Voodoo version, and the game's sharp graphics look much more sophisticated because of it. There is a lot of motion and activity in the background, the sense of speed is good, and the amount of polygons and high grade textures are also notable.

While harassing my local Electronics Boutique for information, I found several Playstation2 titles were already on sale. Street Fighter, Evergrace, Armored Core2, and Eternal Ring were all in stock. It looks like the 18th will be when most of the launch titles are released. ESPN: Track and Field, X-Squad, Tekken, Swing Away Golf, SSX, Silent Scope, Orphen, Madden, and Fantavision should all be available for purchase on Weds. The clerk also informed me that the following peripherals would be available: Multi-tap, Memory card, Vert.and horiz. stands, and the S-video cable. My advice to you is to pick up a few games early, and if you don't get a system on the 26th, take the games back. No harm done, no money lost. This means one less thing to worry about on the 26th, but it would suck to have games without a system wouldn't it?

Next Gen Laura game details - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 5:12 PM, EDT
C&VG kicked up new details of the upcoming Laura game for the PS2.
Here’s a bit:
The new Lara - note: not Tomb Raider - is looking so good you want to scream with frustration at the marginal yearly PlayStation output Core has bombarded us with for the last five years. CVG took the first look at what has been completed so far of the PS2 Lara last Friday, and can confirm beyond any shadow of a doubt that this has the potential to be the most accomplished adult-oriented adventure game ever created.
Character animation is looking extremely slick. The new PS2 Lara has over 5,000 polygons on her body, as opposed to the 500 of the PlayStation version. Walking, running and speaking, she looks a world away from what you're used to seeing on your PlayStation and PC. This easily looks as polished as anything we've seen running on PlayStation 2 so far.
FGN also scored some info on the upcoming Laura title
A bit of the article:
A Core spokeswoman told FGN Online, "We have spent eight months designing and writing the Lara Croft book, which features several different characters, levels, stories and adventures.
"Players will buy the full original game from the shops and then we will offer new episodic instalments over the Internet via PlayStation 2. The game will pan out much like a soap opera, with new characters, levels and situations being introduced at regular intervals. Tomb Raider Next Gen will be an epic game."

A bit:
In the forest level, we controlled three characters, the main hero, a male warrior, and a female spellcaster. We also summoned a massive minotaur to provide us with additional muscle. He was easily twice the size of the large male warrior, and wielded a great scythe that was as long as we were tall. The detail on the characters is impressive, although the animations right now sometimes look out of sync. The environment in the forest level looks very realistic: there's lots of shrubbery, and the horizon is lined with tall trees.

Gamespot posted a review of EA’s PS2 football game, giving it 9.1/10.
Here’s a bit of the graphics part:
Visually, Madden 2001 on the PlayStation 2 is unsurpassed in its detail and polish. The game is almost perfect in its visual replication of the fields and players of the NFL. The textures used for the fields, jerseys, and skin of the players is incredible. Grass fields look just like real grass, which can actually get lodged in the corner of a player's facemask after he sinks his head into the soil after a missed dive tackle. During the game's replays, you can actually see the individual bumps of the pigskin on the football. All of these little visual details really make the game look and feel real. For instance, line judges will hastily drop the line markers and move out of the way when players run out of bounds in their direction. The animations of the players themselves are extremely fluid and realistic.

Rayman Revolution interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:58 PM, EDT
The boys over at Daily Radar smacked up an interview with the team behind Rayman Revolution.
A slice:
DR: What about the game's look and feel? Can you tell us about the special effects, lighting and animation?
SM: We created the special effects to increase the player's sensations and emotions in the gameplay experience. When Rayman swims underwater, water-skis or wanders into the desert, a large amount of environmental special effects come into play, thanks to the power of the PS2 processor. It's striking how one's personal sensations can be modified. By adding convincing "afterburner" fires at the end of a rocket you can improve the sensation of speed drastically. Emotion can be enhanced by, for example, adding hundreds of butterflies in a forest scene.
Lighting was our main concern because it's key in stressing the quality of textures or to indicate new passages. Lighting conveys an overall feeling of beauty and quality. We spent a lot of time on this specific point.
Smuggler’s Run review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:57 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted a review of the PS2 racer Smuggler’s Run, giving it 8/10.
Here’s a bit:
The game sports five modes of play. The primary mode is the smuggler's mission mode, where a semblance of a plot guides you through a series of missions that collectively represent objectives from all the other game modes. The crooks and smugglers mode pits you against a whole slew of other smugglers in an every-man-for-himself competition to deliver the loot to the checkpoint. The loot grab mode puts you in one of two rival gangs of smugglers who are working to deliver the most contraband to their particular drop-off. In both of these modes you can steal the contraband from the carrier by smashing into his vehicle, which makes for fast-paced action. The checkpoint race mode eliminates the contraband altogether and simply has you racing opponents through a series of checkpoints, and the joyriding mode eliminates all the distractions and lets you take a leisurely drive through any of the game's three massive maps.
Timesplitters Vs UT - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:55 PM, EDT
DailyRadar posted a comparison with the two first-person shoot games that will be available at launch.
Here’s a bit:
Challenge 3: Level Design
TimeSplitters:
From gritty city streets to sci-fi landscapes, the levels are well designed but not amazing. Many times it's hard to figure out why things are laid out the way they are, but there's always a good hiding spot or two.
Unreal Tournament:
If there's one thing UThad over Q3 -- and there were actually 24,520 things -- it was level design. From amazing pirate ships to castles in the sky, UT has the best levels ever.

IGN posted first impressions of EA’s upcoming PS2 motocross game-
A slice:
Coming back to the bike's feel, I can tell you that these bikes, even at this stage in development, are incredibly responsive and powerful. Although I chose the smaller class race, which means I rode on a 125 cc bike, man, I could move that thing. By pressing the L1 button (which opens the throttle) and revving the engine, you can actually pull off wheelies. (If you love the analog pads, you can use the left one for steering and the right one for accleration and braking.) Yep, for for the first time in any motocross game the wheelies are not pre-animated one-button giveaways, but instead are totally created on the fly.

X-Dome.com has taken a look at the Xbox GPU , the NV25 and what it's capable off. Also comparing it to the PS2 and explaining many of the different graphic terms.
A bit:
Vertex Compression. If you notice, the Xbox has much less available bandwidth than the other consoles (just 5.4GB), but it needs to process well over twice as much data as its next closest competitor, the Playstation 2. Since every vertex in a model needs to be stored and read when transforming a model, transforming 60+ million vertices every second requires a whole lot of bandwidth (over 1.5 GB/sec). So, in order to counteract this enormous problem, NVIDIA included vertex compression in the Xchip, which shrinks this data to approximately one-third of its original size, requiring much less memory and bandwidth than the uncompressed vertices.

IGN is featuring “The Lost Diaries”, regular features from Irrational's staff on particular aspects of the horror adventure game's development.
Here’s a bit of the first “diary”:
Presentation
The Lost is Irrational’s first 3rd person perspective game. Why? We felt it was important the player identify with his/her character. Especially when the player character is composed of over 10,000 polygons! We also decided that while the game did have strong RPG elements, we didn’t want the skills and weapon upgrades to be presented as numbers on some ancillary text screen. As the player gets more powerful and acquires new weapons, this will be visible on the character. In other words; get a cool new toy, see a cool new toy.

There are two primary weapon systems on your ship, which can be fired independently or simultaneously.

Sony's PS2 Prelaunch Party - Comments (0)

Gamecenter posted an article about Sony’s PlayStation 2 prelaunch party in San Francisco.
Here’s a bit:
The party, held appropriately at Sony's Metreon, took up most of the four floors of the entertainment complex. Though much of the party was dedicated to the obligatory dancing, mingling, and drinking, Sony did have quite a number of PS2's set up in one room.
The best-looking PS2 games at the party had to be the two EA Sports games, Madden NFL 2001 and FIFA 2001. Madden looks as good or better than Sega's acclaimed NFL 2K1, which will no doubt make the football game one of the must-haves for the platform.

Armored Core 2 review - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 5:21 PM, EDT
Gaming Age posted a review of From Software’s mech fighter AC2.
A slice:
Enter the player, a mercenary known as a 'Raven.' Politics and megalomania hold little interest in the face of money and fame for the Ravens, so after you have been inducted to the group (via an obligatory initiation/introduction mission), you are presented with a list of missions from all sides, and standing challenge from the game's 'arena' full of rival pilots. From here the game becomes a mostly open-ended series of choices between what mission/arena opponent to face, how to spend the money from finishing said mission/opponent, and how to build the 'best' mech for the next challenge. It is, in more ways than one, the same gaming experience as Armored Cores past.
Super Puzzle Bobble review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:20 PM, EDT
IGN posted a review of Taito’s PS2 Puzzle Bobble game (Bust-A-Move in the US).
Here’s a bit:
While Super Puzzle Bobble is a solid game, it doesn’t quite live up to Puzzle Bobble 4 on the PlayStation. The fourth installment featured the ability to make your own puzzles, a delightful “Challenge” mode, and a collection of user-designed puzzles from all across the country. (It also featured Bob, Bub, and Devilin as playable characters, but we won’t get into that.) In the end, Super Puzzle Bobble shows off a variety of new gameplay elements and polished art design, but doesn’t have the same staying power as its older brother.
Orphen preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:20 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted a hands-on preview of Kadokawa Shoten’s RPG Orphen: Scion of Sorcery.
A slice:
The game's combat occurs in real time, and it is rather quickly paced. You can choose to attack various targets, which aren't always actual foes. One battle, for example, had a swinging censer as a target, and knocking it down set fire to the area immediately below it, damaging all foes in the area. In lieu of magic points or a similar method of regulating spell use, you have to "charge up" spells by holding down their respective buttons, allowing Orphen to power up their effects before unleashing them. While it's possible to unleash a flurry of, say, projectile attacks, the effects will be more lethal if they're charged for a period of time.

TP: I can't really talk about specific genres. Because we are working on the PlayStation 2, I can't give away anything about our current project. But in working on the PS2 we found that our experience with the original PlayStation was invaluable, and that has kind of given us a leg up. It is a challenging machine, but its potential is amazing. We've just been scratching the surface now after working on it for a little over a year, but it is a great machine to work on.

Get that PS2! - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:27 PM, EDT Daily Radar smacked up a “Gamer's Guide to Getting a PS2”
Here’s a bit:
Go Deep
There's not much point in going to the Babbage's on your busy street in New York City -- major metropolitan areas and heavily trafficked places will sell out quickly. One way around this might be to line up for entrance to a game store at a mall -- since the mall building itself is likely to be closed at night, that may put off some campers.
You may also want to try stores in quiet, out-of-the-way locations -- you know those big strip malls way out in the middle of nowhere. The further away it is from an easy walk -- or from suburban centers -- the more likely it is to have spares, and the less likely it is to have folks lining up all night.

Mitsuru-san: About twenty, which is plenty. By comparison, that's about twice as many as a game like Virtua Fighter.
Question: Are you involved with designing other aspects of the game besides the characters? For example, items, backdrops...
Mitsuru-san: I do, when Koei asks me to. [laughs..] Actually, I have designed items and weapons for the game. I like them because they're fantasy weapons, you couldn't use them to hurt people in reality.

Moto GP features many real-life names such as Honda and Suzuki motorcycles that really burn up the track. There is a great sense of speed which goes a long way in portraying the danger and excitement of taking tight corners while leaning almost onto the pavement whizzing buy at breakneck speed. There are two very cool camera angles that get players right down into the action, the first person view or over the shoulder view. As the driver's lean into the turns their bodies lean as well and they lower their knee just like in real life, adding to the realism.

Severance 2 confirmed PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:23 PM, EDT
C&VG reports that Rebel Act has confirmed a sequel to its PC adventure Severance: Blade of Darkness.
A slice of the article:
According to Rebel Act, the sequel will seek to hone the multiplayer aspects of the original, but will not go down the path of mass multiplayer. Small groups will get together – in the same fashion as Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast – and adventure through an incredibly violent, but far more realistically realised fantasy world. You can already hack off limbs and beat people to death with them, so the sequel should be just about enough to churn your guts.
Red Faction interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:22 PM, EDT IGN posted an interview with Red Factions Producer Rob Loftus.
A slice:
IGNPC: At what stage in the development process are you now? Is everything still on schedule?
Rob Loftus: Red Faction is Pre Alpha at about 45% complete. Both the PC and PS2 versions remain on schedule to be out in the first half of 2001.
IGNPC: How big of a part will the story play in the game? Will Red Faction focus more on pure action like Quake III, or will it be more cinematic like Half-Life? Can you tell us a little about the story?
Rob Loftus: Red Faction is completely story driven in the style of Half Life. However, as the story unfolds it is punctuated with the fast paced action reminiscent of Quake III.
The story takes place 100 years in the future on a Mars mining colony owned by a company named Ultor. The player takes control of Parker, a newly recruited Miner who has come to Mars to seek his fortune. Upon arriving on Mars, he finds out that working conditions are abysmal and he is swept up in an uprising of rebel miners.

And secondly there are fun upgrades, "The fun evolutions give a goal to the gamer that has finished the game, they go back and get crazy animations that are part of the rewarding system."

Star Wars: Starfighter impressions
Posted by @ 5:28 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted some impressions on Lucasarts’ PS2 shooter.
Here’s a bit
All three of the levels demonstrate the different feel of the individual ships. The nimbleness of the Naboo Fighter is felt immediately in the canyon, and it has a distinct spaceship feeling. When cruising around corners, it becomes apparent that the ship floats, rather than relying on lift and speed to keep it aloft. Nym's Havoc feels like a flying tank as it flies through explosions and dust clouds with classic barnstorming style, comfortably absorbing damage that would send weaker ship flying into pieces.
Third-parties Comment on PS2 Shortage
Posted by @ 5:30 PM, EDT
Gamespot spoke with Electronic Arts and Activision concerning the PS2 shortage for the US launch.
A slice:
GameSpot: Do you think the shortage will turn consumers to the competition?
Kathy Vrabeck (ACT): You know, I really don't. I think it's going to create one of those scarcity situations where people will be clamoring for it even more because they can't get it. It really has all the makings of something like that. Normally it's the hard-core gamers that adopt new hardware first. So, it won't be mom deciding what to get her kids for Christmas. It's older teens buying it with their own money. They may buy extra PS games to tide themselves over, but they won't be moving over to other platforms. Everybody is so excited about the PS2 that I think they're going to know that they're going to be able to get one sooner rather than later.
Sky Odyssey preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 4:10 PM, EDT
We added a preview of Activision's Sky Odyssey.
A slice:
This is somewhat of a flying simulator but Activision prefers to call it a "flight adventure" game. It's a different concept however from a regular action/adventure game because even though there are objective missions to play through, you'll be graded on your performance during the missions. Players will be required to fly different aircraft along certain routes while passing through checkpoints along the way. At the end of the mission you will be graded on such things as speed, precision and stunts.

Posted by @ 4:03 PM, EDT
GameSpy posted an interview with Red Faction's Alan Lawrance.
A slice:
GameSpy: There have been a lot of first-person shooters on the market lately. What is it about Red Faction that will intrigue gamers and set it apart from the rest? What new features are going to be introduced into the genre with this title?
Alan Lawrance: Certainly being able to destroy the environment makes Red Faction stand out from other FPS games on the market. Besides the innovative technology of geometry modification, RF has many features that taken together make it stand above other FPS games on the market: story-driven gameplay, interactive levels, a variety of vehicles, advanced physics, advanced AI, great weapons and strong multiplayer.

EA to use LIPSinc Echo for dialogue intensive titles - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:58 PM, EDT
LIPSinc recently announced that Electronic Arts has licensed LIPSinc Echo for the production of five upcoming game titles.
Here’s a bit of the press release:
This Echo license covers the use LIPSinc's proprietary lip-synching and facial animation technology in the production of four games for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and one for PC systems. NBA Live 2001 will be the first title released using this license. Electronic Art's first license of Echo included production for Madden NFL(TM) Football 2001.
"Game characters have become synthetic actors and dialogue is an essential element of the effect we create. The quality of the lip-synching can make or break the sense of reality," said Scott Cronce, vice president and chief technical officer at EA. "It's also very time-consuming to do lip-synching by hand. LIPSinc's automated solution gives us high-quality results faster and at less cost."
NFL GameDay 2001 preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:57 PM, EDT
IGN posted a preview of 989 Sports' PS2 football title.
Here’s a bit:
These collisions and moves will not only react better than ever, but they should also look more realistic than what we're used to in our sports games, as over 1,100 position specific moves have been motion-captured for the game that have been done by 13 different NFL athletes. Players should look forward to the most realistic looking stumbles, drag downs, flip tackles, sideline tiptoe catches ever seen in a football videogame.

Thunder Tanks interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:07 PM, EDT
3DO posted an interview with one of the software engineer’s of the BattleTanx sequel World Destruction League: Thunder Tanks.
A bit:
Q: So how do you give a tank a "personality"?
It's not easy! Basically, we started by working with the game designers to decide how we wanted each different tank to behave. We wanted to give the designers the power to create the personalities, rather than relying on programming. What we actually came up with is a relatively simple system where the designers enter in the desired personality traits on a spreadsheet to create what you might call "personality templates," and the programming reads those templates to create the behavior of the tank.
Ring of Red (p)review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:05 PM, EDT
Gamers.com smacked up an import (p)review of Konami’s mech strategy game Ring of Red.
A slice:
All skirmishes center on your AFW. Move your mechs to optimum firing range, load that shell and let 'er rip. Before you fire your gun, the game brings up a shaky targeting reticule that slowly steadies as you watch your accuracy rate go up. The longer you wait, the higher the accuracy; but keep in mind that if you wait too long, enemy AFW's and ground troops will punish you for idling. If you're hit directly while you're trying to aim, then you'll have to start the aiming process all over again. If the AFW is destroyed on either side, the ground troops will turn tail and run. Not only do you get to "pilot" your hulking AFW, you also call the shots for your ground troops too. Those antitank bazookas raining on your parade? Send out a firing squad and put an end to their pestering.

Kessen II preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:00 PM, EDT
Gamespot posted a preview of the sequel to Koei’s strategy war game Kessen.
Here’s a bit:
You can expect more than 40 hours of gameplay in Kessen II. In the first Kessen you played through seven stages in one game, for a total of 11 stages after you played through using the secondary character. In Kessen II you will play ten stages in one game, for a total of more than 30 stages after you've played through the game using the alternate characters. The first Kessen closely followed the storyline according to Japanese history books, but the sequel will have a more original storyline. But fret not - fans of Romance of the Three Kingdoms can expect to see key events from the epic saga included in the storyline.

Unreal Tournament interview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:59 PM, EDT
IGN had a chat with Lead Designer Cliff Bleszinski to talk about the progress of UT.
Here’s a bit:
IGNPS2: What PS2 exclusive features should we be on the look out for?
CB: We've made many changes and improvements for PlayStation 2. First off, we're taking the characters from the PC version, that were a bit like extras from a movie and we've rounded out their personalities a bit. Many characters have their own body type now, they've been re-animated, and we've given them great portraits that players can pick when they choose their character for the game. I think that this really does add another level of identity to the game.
There's also a bunch of new levels in there – at least 15, last time I counted.
Unreal Tournament impressions - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 5:59 PM, EDT
The boys over at Daily Radar posted their impressions of this first-person shooter:
The single biggest difficulty that gamers are going to have with UT is the control. Using the DualShock at first makes about as much sense as chopsticks do the first time you use them. How the hell are these two little sticks supposed to work together? It just don't make no sense!
But, as with chopsticks, a little practice changes everything. After some initial bitching, we found that the DualShock made a lot of sense, as long as you released your brain and simply allowed your hands to do their thing. UT's control structure may have a steep initial learning curve, but within two levels we were fragging bots like champions.
Street Fighter EX3 review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:12 PM, EDT
We added a review of the PS2 fighter SFEX3.
A slice:
I also spent a fair amount of time using the Character edit mode. Since the Character edit mode was primarily in Japanese it was difficult for me to use, but I got the gist of it. You are given a character named "Ace", who has no special moves. You can purchase moves by accomplishing certain goals while fighting with him. This is a nice feature but it could use some more features, I can't fault Akira for putting it in though. Innovation is a GOOD thing.
How to score a PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:12 PM, EDT
Dailyradar went on a PS2 search, checking out exactly how hard it will be to get a PS2 at October 26th.
Here’s a bit of the conclusion:
Well, the alarm bells are screaming, and my search has brought me little more than a throbbing migraine, a lengthy phone bill and a doorframe in need of imminent replacement. It looks like we latecoming game junkies are going to be excluded from the PlayStation2 party after all.

Silpheed review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:07 PM, EDT
IGN posted a review of Treasure’s PS2 shooter Silpheed: The Lost Planet.
Here’s a bit:
Any gamer worth his salt will be familiar with the basics. At its core, Silpheed is a traditional top-down 2D shooter, thrust into audiovisual overdrive. The opening FMV establishes the story via badly-acted English voiceovers: some type of hostile alien lifeform has attacked and assimilated the planet Solont, and a fleet of SA-77 Silpheed Super Dogfighters has been sent to the front-line of combat. Hideous alien creations fly at you, and you extend interstellar diplomacy by blowing them the hell up. At the mid-point and end of each level, bosses with three different attacks attempt to do away with you, and you riddle their corpses with cannon fire as well. But despite formulaic game layout, Treasure kicks out the action in true style that manages to make everything old seem new again.
